I love that olive/army green color sole, and the color combo with the uppers. I think you may be on to something here, with possibly converting 877s for the masses. Like as a dressier type boot. Another great change is changing the eyelets to brass and adding speed hooks. Sharp!! 🔥
These look great. You may find that in losing the soft Traction Tred sole and the cork inside that they will be a lot less forgiving in terms of comfort, but I could be wrong. I went the opposite way with one of my many Iron Rangers, having Red Wing swap out the stock sole with the black Traction Tred sole of the 8828 Alpine Portage moc toe. This way, I made my own custom Iron Ranger Traction Tred with the original leather and cork insole, and Red Wing only charges $120.
I actually went the other way and ask for the vibram lug sole on my moc boots I just took them yesterday so I’ll be waiting patiently to get them back but yes is awesome that for $120 I will get a new redwings boots
I like finding high-end insoles from second-hand dress shoes with rubber cork padding and leather tops to swap into my boots. They're usually thinner than any of the alternatives while giving better break-in and support that doesn't dish out like you mentioned with the built in cork midsoles. I also have dimensionally big and wide feet (13 EEE) that are thin up and down so I prefer to fill up that extra space in most boots with a wool felt crushable insole. They speed up the break-in process and make the entire boot more breathable, less prone to moisture build-up and more antibacterial to cut down on smells. Even in hot weather. They can also be swapped out cheaply if any part wears out without having to go for a full resole. It's a setup that's served me well for 40+ years and I wish more people knew about it as a possibility. I also prefer military speed laces to eyelets or speed hooks every single time. They don't pucker and wear out the leather like the alternatives and they're so much faster to get on and off that it feels like you're cheating. Hope that helps someone! 👍
I bet if Rose Anvil made slings, stock shell carriers, stuff like that, they'd sell. I'd buy them anyway. Shouldn't be too much of a logistics challenge, although, that market might be saturated.
Ya man… usually I would down size my boots a size from my sneaker sizes… IE I wear a 12 in Nikes so I would tend to get an 11 in redwings… but lately I’ve decided to start getting all my boots in 12 and just keep it simple… it leaves a good half an inch or so of extra room at the end… this is nice because it allows me to wear thick socks comfortably and my feet can spread out in them much better length and width… and that’s what I’m mainly concerned with these days, not having my toes crushed together in the boot but rather allow them to hold their natural shape.
A copper rough and tough knife pocket kit would be *fantastic*. I've tried looking for one elsewhere, but haven't had a bit of luck in that department.
I'd love to see some how to/diy videos with some of the bare minimum tools. Like how to saddle stich an make little items. Cause I honestly would love to get into leather work, and being so close to Horween I can do go to Ashland Leather for some leathers and make whatever. I have an idea for a little pouch to hold these rosaries i make, so i figured that's a good idea, but I don't know where to start...
Right there “width” you on not having my toes squished. The gemming makes the hot spots worse like you said! Wearing Birkenstocks & Altras through the pandemic and my feet are healthier, but miss the boot look. Just ordered RW Iron Rangers in EE width and hoping for a revelation. In general we need wider boots with construction better than Lems and the like.
Looking to get my own custom pair as I’ve been using redwing EXOLITE for the past theee purchases and want something new I just love the BOA system and how light they are. But LOVE LOVE these
So that's how you swap out hardware; one of the first things I notice is the hardware as it really makes or breaks the boot. I don't know why manufacturers put brass on a black book or silver on a brown. Fun fact: I saw the likes and views scroll up while watching this...very cool!
What’s wierd is it says there’s 10k likes and when you click on more info then there’s only 1.3k likes. Plus I’ve been the 167 person to like about 30 videos couple days ago lol.
Personally I don't think the work made these look dressy in any way. In my opinion you made them look more like a 50's-60's hunting boot, and they really look great. The outsole may be a bit more suited to an urban environment, but the look isn't dressy. Personally I'd love a pair of these with a mini lug in this sole color. I don't like the knife pocket though, I think it's dumb and useless. I carry a pocket knife and a belt knife as tools, on the side of my boot is like the least convenient place I can think of to carry my cutting tools except for maybe in a backpack.
I love the idea of resolving my own shoes. But where does one get all the stuff besides Amazon for some of the tools. Oh and the veg tan leather to make the shank and for the rest of the filler? @RoseAnvil2
The 10877 has D, E, and EE. Let us know how they break in. I once sized up(to 8.5D) for the width, and after they broke in it was clear the ball of my foot sat too far back. However, the 8 EE was a touch too wide after it broke in; that said they are great for weather with super thick socks and a wooly insole, just a little loose for regular socks in the summer lol.
I think this is one of their many boots that doesn't come in my size. But maybe I'll look into it further sometime next year along with those other three or whatever... [Blacksmith; Irish Setter... ???] But one of the big reasons I went with the Thorogood wedge sole was they were about the only brand who had an 8" in size 7 that wasn't affected by supply chain issues last year, so this year there were a couple more that cost less, but also less quality, blah, blah.
And now I get to go on my usual about how I can't stand a boot that's a smidge too big and speed hooks are a real drag for me when I want them to feel secure and not worry about coming undone or that bit busting off because I pulled too hard, etc.
@rose anvil 2 Hi, i would like to cut the white wedge sole to look them like your modified ones with the heel. I know a shank will give them more stability. but would it be possible or is the sole falling apart. Maybe you have an old pair with wedge sole and could do the test. I would also see how they will look. i know Red Wing has done this before but they used a stock white sole with heel and i havent found one in europe.
Unfortunately, I've looked into this already and there's little price difference once you have to swap out enough components BUT the lead time will be cut down by several months if you can find a cobbler who likes projects instead of just resoles.
Any thoughts on doing a rose anvil builds on converting goodyear welt to stitchdown? Ive got a pair of thorogood v series boots that have had the welt crack in multiple spots. Instead of trying to get the welt replaced i was thinking i might want to try to make them stitchdown.
I think the best way to get more toe room is go up in size, instead of up in width. Increased width may mean more toe room, but it also may mean more room in the heel. This increases the chance of heel slip.
Working in cobbling at the moment, I gotta say I somewhat hate sewn through rubber soles. What's the point of the stitching going through the rubber? I'd much rather have stitching hold the whole insole-upper-welt-midsole construction together and preserve it all with a glued-on rubber outsole. Extra brownie points for having some sort of groove or channel for the stitching to run in on the underside od the midsole, so there's no chance for it to be accidentally sanded down in repair or worn out by negligent wear. Maybe I'm missing the big point of stitching through the rubber outsole, but it's borderline infuriating to me because of the possibly excellent construction, marred and defeated by a single detail, that could so easily have been fixed/avoided. Love your content, by the way. I recommend your channel to any and all customers that appear remotely open to education.
Man if they came without that goofy marshmallow sole I would think hard about buying that boot. But with this that sole I would buy now give me I want now… lol 😊
I welded in my 877s and burnt all the stitching out of the toes and the top of the toe is curled up and has holes burnt in them. You wouldn’t know anyone that makes replacement tongues so I can fix it myself?
Construction/logging for 30+ years , Redwing broke my arch within a couple days and I have fought it for years now. Redwing is garbage for someone's grandpa
