Moi, I won't be alone in today's video since myself and my partner Iisa will be unboxing the Finnish baby box 2021 together. We were so excited to see what was inside! Let me know what item was your favourite.
"In 1949, the maternity grant was made available to all mothers. The maternity grants scheme has been administered by Kela since 1994. Previously, maternity packages had been provided by the National Board of Social Welfare (now the National Institute for Health and Welfare) and the Government Purchasing Centre."

1937 we got in Finland law for helping ladies who waited baby. Next year help started and after that KELA is giving all parents who wait baby this box! Because in Finland babies also sleep in winter outside you need warm to wear her! Outside sleeping is daytime so you might need some things to help monitoring her! I'm happy for your new born! I wish the US had something like this. My babies were huge and my 2nd wore a 60cm sized zipper from hanna andersson on his first day. Newborn is generally 50cm but my kiddos were 9.5 and 11lbs respectively. Nice thing about clothes like finland gives you is you can fold cuffs and have extensions on onesies which allow for a much larger size range. In usa my kids blew through the baby sizes because stuff here isnt designed like that

While the baby box has got even international attention in recent times, its origin is quite dark. Finland wasn't a developed nation pre-WW2: poverty was rampant and newborn mortality was too high. After the WW2 things didn't get better immediately because Finland was damaged heavily by the war and was also burdened by the war reparation obligation. Of course nowadays you could say it's just a historical remnant. Some remnants are worth keeping, though. Nevertheless, countries with a wealthier past obviously wouldn't have had any need for a system like this.

You have it correct, in away, Finland tried; first free lunch, 1926,etc.

This is true. There is however another side, which should be mentioned. Prior to World War 2, lots of women, mainly those living in the country, gave birth outside hospitals, usually in their own Sauna, which amazingly was the most hygienic place of their homes, in times when indoor plumbing was a rarity in rural areas. There are statistics which prove the childbirth deaths were lower in Finland than in many other European rural areas at the same time.

Aaaaw, cuteness everywhere! ❤️Those little clothes made me so nostalgic. We took the box both times we had a baby. Shirt with snap fastener is so handy and so are the suits with socks or as we call them, potkupuku/ potkupuvut. Sleeping bag and wool suit were maybe my favorites or the things we used the most. It was also lovely to meet your beautiful partner. I hope she will enjoy the rest of her pregnancy and I wish all the best for both of you.

So this was also "the reveal of the partner" -video! You are such a lovely couple! ^.^ I find it funny that the Kela includes condoms in the BabyBox, as if they are wishing not to send anymore babyboxes... :D ..And to mention: I know that the birthrate in Finland is in decline, and that is a bad thing for us as a nation.. :/ Edit: It was lovely to meet You Isa!

Not to be buzzkill but you do know that's not the real reason right? 😃 It has multiple reasons including the fact that many women can't use the same birthcontrol after birth than before trying of baby so lot of people start with condoms. Also there are other health reasons too but I don't want to misquote and I'm too tired to actually google them at the moment. 😅

Aww really lovely. We have baby bags in the UK...with nappies and wipes etc but gosh, nothing like the Finnish Box! Excellent! I'm don't know if the UK version has improved because this was a while ago! X

Exciting unboxing for both of you! Yeah definitely a good deal to get the box. It's also a great way to wrap your minds around the whole idea of having a baby. Oh and you really don't need much else than what is in the box for the first months. Good luck!

The Baby Box is an old Finnish tradition, nowdays it's like the government welcoming the new baby to the world :) The thick sleeping bag is for outdoor naps in winter. Nordic babys often take naps outside in winter (on the balcony etc), even in subzero temperature.

You clearly said that it is crazy to have clothes for the baby. So, if Australians are so unfamiliar with having clothing, why should there be clothes for babies as part of maternity support 😜😉

As a tip: get *bamboo diapers* ! They don't smell as much as normal diapers, they degrage with other bio-trash in like 6-8 months (a normal diaper can take years to break down) and they are made from renuable ingredients! I swear everyone I know with kids swear by them and we also gift a package or two to everyone! Unfortunately I was born just a year or two before bamboo diapers became a thing in Finland, but otherwise bamboo fiapers would have been a thing for our family too.

Yes some of the clothes were definitely quite big! But who knows, maybe our daughter will be quite tall too since we both are tall. - Iisa and Jack

Maybe if you paid those exorbitant taxes that these people pay, you might get this fancy package. I don’t believe it’s necessary. Go buy what you like. In Canada the gov sets up an education fund for you when you are born in hope you save it till you are 18 spend it for university expenses yah I know education is free over there but then use it to buy a car or rent or food. No they are not better off than in other counties but it makes them feel better that they think they are. Good for you clap! Clap ! Clap!
