Congratulations on your pick-ups! The only thing better than getting original art from a great penciller is getting original art that has been inked so nicely over the great pencils. I can remember reading comics as a kid and not understanding why sometimes my favorite artists' work didn't look as great from issue-to-issue. I never realized just how important the inker was until much later on.
@KarensPages
@KarensPages 5 месяцев назад
💯agree, PBales! The inker is so important and can completely change the appearance of the art. I like how clean Keith Williams' inks are and how he stays true to Saviuk's pencils. His background inks are amazing, too, with all the little details that he adds (especially when you see the art in person). Thank you so much for your comment! 😊

The Spidey art I have is nothing major from a comic / key perspective, but it is sentimental to me. It's Marvel Age Spider-Man issue #11, some interior pages. I want to get the actual book so I can frame the page and the art in one, just never got around to it yet! I do have two other pieces of art, one is an original drawing from Wizard Comics back in the day where they mashed Grifter (Image Comics) and Gambit into a single character; drawn by Brett Booth if I recall. The other is an original animation cell from the Spawn TV series - not comic art but original art nonetheless, and a very ominious looking pose of Spawn if I do say so myself! @@KarensPages

Congratulations on buying those Alex Saviuk pages. My favorite Saviuk Spider-Man work would probably be a cover where Spidey was fighting "Joe Fix-It". His work was really understated, sort of like a Herb Trimpe or Pat Olliffe. Great work! It's nice to see fans who know what they want and aren't afraid to enjoy it.

Awesome pages Karen, congratulations! Love Saviuk's Spider-man! I hope they eventually reprint his Spider-man newspaper strip, as I have never read any of it. I know they were collecting the strip in hardcover but I don't think they've gotten close to his era. The strips, particularly the Sundays, inked by Romita are supposed to be really good. Also, if you haven't read it already, there is a Marvel Graphic Novel called Spider-man Parallel Lives written by Gerry Conway and penciled by Saviuk from the late 80's that is one of my favorites. It goes into a lot of detail about how MJ discovered when Peter was Spidey, etc. It's a nice, one story, easy read with wonderful art.

Okay, every time you tell me you're going to zig, you then zag! What happened to the comic BOOK unboxing??? You sure are full of little surprises, aren't you? Anyway, it's so cool that all three of these pages came from the same issue. You didn't mention it, so did that factor into your decision to go after the 2nd and 3rd page? Although Web was the tertiary Spidey title at the time, both it and Spectacular were REALLY fun to read during this era, owing in fact in large part to Tombstone's introduction to the Spider-Man universe. I haven't read them since they were coming out monthly when I was a teen and I know how your perceptions of stories you read that long ago can quickly change after you reread them well into adulthood, but my memories of the stories were that they were really good back then. It was neat that they were even getting Robbie Robertson involved in the stories and having the Green Goblin guest star as well. It's so cool that you even got a GG cameo on page two! With his classic Romita based style, Saviuk was the right artist at the right time for this title and Williams was indeed a fine inker for him. At this point in time, Marvel wanted the McFarlane style adhered to as much as possible, so you can see that influence in the way Saviuk drew the overly large eyes and how he drew the webs on the costume and the webs in his shooters, but I really like the fact that, at least at this point and for a little while longer, Saviuk still kept Spidey to more Romita influenced poses. If you look at page 4, you can also see that Saviuk is also still adhering to the classic style of storytelling and page design, using primarily square and rectangular panels, although that would end up changing a bit later on in Saviuk's run as the calls to be more McFarlane-esque got louder and louder. But his staging, layouts and camera movement were always very good, as you can see by all the quick movement and action happening on this page, in spite of Spidey only really being a clear, visual factor in one of the three panels he appears in. And boy, what a panel it is. An utterly webtacular pose! Page 13 is great because you mentioned how Robbie thinks Tombstone is about to kill him, and I can tell you that even I as a reader was riveted to this page, ALSO thinking ""Oh no, this is it for Robbie, Tombstone is gonna kill him!" 😂 The thing is, I was already jaded and old enough to know that comic book deaths are all fake as fuck, but Tombstone was always played more as a gangster/thug than a super-villain. So while super powered characters never really kill one another, those of us who know anything about the mob, know that unlike super powered characters, mobsters actually exist and DO kill people. So I was legit thinking he was going to kill Robbie. I love the way he shocks him by telling him they're even and let's him off the hook for shooting him. That's not only a nice storytelling beat, but it serves to make the very next panel as explosive as it is! This is how you get a reader's emotions and yank them up, down and all over the place! The first tier of panels are very tense and dramatic, but Saviuk drops the tension dramatically with the 5th panel as he reveals to us that Robbie is going to live after all, right before ramping the tension and excitement right back up to an even higher degree than it was in the top tier of panels, with the explosive, glass shattering "Spidey to the rescue" scene! Really expert storytelling from top to bottom. Now, even back when I was reading this issue, I recall wondering why 1980's gangsters were dressed as and were using 1930's era acoutrements and clothing, but I LOVE those things from that era so I let it slip then and I continue to let it slip now.😉 All in all, three fabulous pages added to your collection, Karen, congratulations! You did a nice job with the production values as well and as always. Well done, I'm already jonesing for your next one!
@KarensPages
@KarensPages 5 месяцев назад
Thank you, Rubén! My NEXT video will be a comic book unboxing and I'm really looking forward to making it!👍 It IS cool that all three pages come from the same issue (especially one featuring Tombstone), but I bought each page on its own merit. Actually, there was a 4th page that I wanted that I ultimately passed on, but now regret not getting -- it was the interior page that mirrored the cover to issue 68. I mostly prefer the classic layouts for art and storytelling. Sometimes crazy layouts can ruin the storytelling and you can't even tell what is happening on the page. I love the 1920's/1930's era gangsters with the pinstripes and Tommy guns even though it doesn't make sense for the 1980's. It couldn't be more perfect. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments. 👍😊
