Could you make a video about spotting faulty gems in the market? Things like opalite, resin malachite, dyed howlite, sodalite impersonating lapis and so on. Even heat treated amethyst. There is a lot of misinformation about rocks and sometimes it can be hard to spot differences in what’s synthetic and what’s real!

I love turquoise because it varies so much. Its color and its density in the matrix is so varied. The Sleeping Beauty is such a beautiful color. And its stabilized so it wont change its color. Its fabulous and it was made super popular by the native americans use of it in all their art, jewelry, and beliefs. Cool episode and a episode the deep dives into turquoise would be awesome!

I enjoy wearing my turquoise jewelry and I’d be very interested in an episode comparing turquoise and dyed howlite. What are the characteristics of the two types of stones, is it possible to spot dyed howlite without special equipment, does howlite get passed off as turquoise? Getting the geologist’s perspective is always interesting.

Nevada has the most variation in mines. Red Mountain, Indian Mountain, lone Mtn, Godber Burnham, Royston, Candelaria, Lander Blue, Blue Wind- those are some big boy CLASSIC mines with the top grades of web matrix. Morenci in AZ is another classic, Kingman in AZ produces tons of turquoise but it is mostly chalk, so the Colbaughs of the Kingman Mine Processing joint they treat it and stabilize it. Most blue is Kingman or Sleeping beauty. In New Mexico, we get Cerillos and Hachita mainly, plus Colorado with the Leadville and Cripple Creek, Manassa AKA King’s Manassa

I know that the finest type of turquoise, meaning the ones that is used by high-end jewelry brands like van cleef and Arpels comes from Iran. There is another mineral that is often sold as turquoise named crisocola. I would like to to hear about them as well. Learning about all the places a gemstone can be found and the difference between the minerals found in each place is always interesting to me.

Although the recipe or formula for the Zachary process is not widely available because it is considered a proprietary formula typically only used by pro lapidaries and gemstone treaters, for those who are merely curious and love science, this isn't the full picture, but here's a little peek through the keyhole into the process. The Zachary process involves heating the turquoise in a solution of zinc (or aluminum) by dissolving it in usually water or ethanol. The concentration of zinc oxide will be higher for intense color change and lower for subtle color change. The exact concentration of the zinc oxide in the solution would depend on the desired result, but it would likely be in the range of 5-25%. Other chemicals like ammonium chloride or zinc chloride may also be used to further the process. This can change the color of the stone from blue to green or from green to blue, depending on the original color of the stone and the metal used. If the original turquoise is blue, heating it in a zinc solution will change the color to green. If the original turquoise is green, heating it in an aluminum solution will change the color to blue. It's important to note that the actual amount of solvent required to dissolve a specific concentration of zinc oxide could vary depending on the specific conditions, such as temperature and pressure, and the purity of the zinc oxide used. P.S. Also, it's important to note, even though the solution is natural, some buyers consider the Zachary process to be an artificial enhancement that can lower the value of the stone. Therefore, untreated turquoise may be considered more valuable by some buyers who are looking for natural and untreated gemstones. For this reason, it's a common practice to disclose if turquoise has undergone the Zachary treatment as it's considered an ethical issue in the gemstone trade.

The word turquoise dates to the 17th century and is derived from the French turquois for "Turkish" because the mineral was first brought to Europe through Turkiye, from mines in the historical Khorasan Province of Persia. It is the national color of Turkiye.
