Burger and McCaw use to go hard at each other, I can remember plenty of big hits in the 2000's. A few of my mates met him in Wellington after a stormers game, they said he was really friendly. Best of a player!!

The most amazing thing is he came out of a coma and had to learn to walk again and was told he will never play rugby again, but he proved the doctors wrong and played for another 5 years

He was tough yes - but no where near as tough as "Buck" Shelford. Rugby's hardest and toughest since 1980 and before that there were some real tough men. Frank Oliver, Moaner Van Heerden.

@Raymond O'Connor Modern players just spend more time in the gym. Colin Meads and Andy Dalton used to spend a week working on their farms before playing on the Saturday. I'd be amused if the petals of today could do that. Hardness is a state of mind combined with physicality. Let's see how long these pumped up petals would last with an old wet leather ball, playing on a rain soaked bog heap, before they popped a shoulder or pulled an over pumped hamstring. If the point that you endeavour to make is that today's game is a different game, then I would agree with you.

Schalla did most of his work where the cameras don't reach. Deep in the ruck. His work rate and defense rate was simply unequaled. And how many guys do you know who fractured their neck in the first half and finished a game? (And had to stop playing for a year!)

@@wot4922 they are. but the Game has changed. the emphasis is more on Athleticism. Burger was a neverending Steamroller. his Workrate was phenomenal. and he almost never worked out in the Gym. he absolutely hated Weights specifically and Training in general. he just wanted to play !
