The basis for discussion in this video is a paper by Richard Baldwin titled "Trade and Industrialization after Globalisation's 2nd Unbundling: How Building and Joining a Supply Chain are Different and Why it Matters." Today's supply chain is scattered across many countries. The old model of industrialization was to build an entire supply chain for a product within a single country. Japan and South Korea largely succeeded in doing this, producing and assembling many products for export in country. But today, along with greater mobility of ideas, it's easier for a country to produce just one part of a product. This video also discusses "development enclaves" within a country, how Thailand has prospered under the new model of industrialization, and how Malaysia and Brazil have faired under the old model of industrialization.
