He could have. But at the end of the day, Roy Williams was the only coach that could push them far. UNC was barely ranked under Daugherty and rarely made deep tournament runs

As CBB grew, you needed someone who had more national connections, which is what Roy Williams brought. I’m not saying daughtery couldn’t have done that, but Roy Williams did it in 2 years
To put it bluntly, Doherty was a jerk that fostered a toxic environment around the program, which is fairly well documented by several accounts. He would have driven UNC into the ground. Although him confronting the Duke bench and stirring the pot was hilarious, can’t deny that 😅.
