Very good interview John. I really enjoyed Andrew's perspectives. He brought up some cogent points such as no ACC titles in football since the 80's, recent attendance issues, and mismatch with the # of non football sports compared to other conferences. UNC I an absolutely beautiful campus and their stadium is amazing especially at night. I agree with Andrew. I would stay put and here is why. I believe a lot of what we are witnessing right now is temporary. Stanford in the ACC as one example. Conference realignment, NIL money, and paying players directly by schools are all fluid situations. There will be other changes coming down the road because some schools like Mississippi State, Oregon State, Wake Forest etc are simply not going to have the money to do what Alabama and Ohio State can do in terms of football. I think we will end up with tiers and then members of each tier can be in the playoffs at the end but what a tier one school pays players will be much different than a tier 3 or 4 school. Also, I believe regional scheduling will return within each tier. Travel costs are going to have to be reduced and regional rivalries will return. No one wants to see Cal play Georgia Tech or Purdue play Washington. More sustainable models will be on the way once these legal issues deliver some clarity and some guardrails are put up on the transfer situation. Truthfully, colleges are in a lot worse shape financially than they are letting on. LSU women's basketball won the National Title in 2023 yet operated in the red in 2024. The money is just not going g to be there to do all of this.

Unlike Carolina, State is not an AAU member. Full stop. That is the differentiator BIG is using to sell expansion member admin; it is adding big research, peer schools and the SEC is not. State seems destined for the Big 12. And Carter continues his decades long record of being wrong about UNC; alumni and fans have been uneasy about Bubba's leadership for months, if not years given all the recent flux in college athletics. UNC was relatively flat-footed on NIL and the department legit seemed fired up about a field hockey championship, the latter being a reflection of being in denial about just how hard it is going to be to field 28 varsity sports going forward. In fact, in light of the dopey, unworkable House "settlement," it is to your competitive disadvantage to field 28 rosters you now have to "pay" instead of say, 11. The upshot is even though I think the BOT will move heaven and earth to try to make a change, my alma mater is probably going to go down with the ACC ship.

It happened at Oregon, USC, UW, and you mention UNC going to MSU, both basketball schools, it follows suit with what happened with Oregon, USC, there’s the leadership swap between OSU, Nebraska, A&M… idk this is all very interesting to watch.

ND is the prize. UNC, Virginia and Miami will most likely be coveted by the Big 10. All 3 are AAU. Miami is where the elite speed comes from. It also becoming NYC Financial South. FSU(not a AAU school) is not a heavy recruiting ground. Virginia, UNC and Maryland have a long history together. Clemson(Not a AAU school) may need a lifeline. South Carolina Gamecocks does not want them in the SEC. They add very little to the Big 10 other than football. But these are football decisions after all.

So do Maryland and Miami. Maryland leads the series by 1 (11-10 I think) game, including one of the greatest comebacks ever in Miami vs the defending National Champion Canes. Miami was up 31-0 at the half. Maryland won 42-40. I’m a Floridian Terp. I’m hoping we get 2 Florida schools to play in conference. UNC and UVA are good fits in the B1G South Pod also. Then there’s ND and GT. FSU missed AAU status by that much this year, to Miami. :)

ND isn't joining the B1G until it has to, and recent events suggest that it has secured the ACC as a relevant Tier 2 (at least) until 2036. I maintain that CLEMSON and UNC are allied and have already committed to the SEC. The level of political interference in NC is unexpected, which will likely affect CEMSON's legal strategy and may force UNC to reconsider the B1G. Word is that UVA has snubbed SEC overtures. First time visiting your channel, and I have multiple nits to pick with AC, whom, for sure has covered Carolina, but is hardly recognized as an unbiased,or reliable source. To call his "explanation" pedestrian, is a disservice to people who know how to walk and chew gum at the same time. Stadiums all over the country are doing exactly what Carolina did in Kenan Stadium. It's an old, albeit beautiful place to watch a game. The seats desperately needed updating, and now the old bleachers are gone, replaced with stadium seats. In the original plans for the addition of the Kenan Football Center, supports were installed to add an additional 10-15k seats winging the coaches' offices. That would put the capacity somewhere around 70-75k seats. Considering the difficulties many schools see with the advent of in home viewing being a preferred experience, they're ahead of the curve. Moving to a conference only makes sense if you can be a draw for your target audience. No disrespect to the members of the B1G, but the Carolina fanbase will pack it out for SEC schedules, but probably not for Rutgers, MSU, Indiana, Perdue, et al. Put Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Auburn, Texas, etc. on the schedule, and let's see how it goes. Also, though Carolina Carolina, rightly stated hasn't won the conference in far, far too long, to assume it hasn't been competitive, or within a wisker of doing it since then, well, is just disingenuous. Schools throughout the SEC are permeated with recruits from NC--because they want to play on the biggest stage, and against/with the best talent. Moving to a conference with no geographic ties, and outside of your footprint, with no regional rivalries would be beyond dense. It'd be program suicide. Carolina belongs in the SEC. Period. Stop. There is no scenario--including a visit from the ghost of Bill Friday, himself--that can change the fact that the fans want Carolina in the SEC, and to then let the chips fall where they may. Keep the NC kids who want to play on the biggest stage in state, eliminating the need to go elsewhere, and see how that goes. This is NOT an academic decision, but purely an athletic one.

If Carolina goes to the b10, they will piss off more than half the fan base. It would THE worse thing to do. I would ask my state rep and senator to stop it.

You would ask your state rep to involve themselves in something that is not a legislative matter? Big govt because you dont get your way? Okay. Take your butt to the SEC

@@A1Googler Well, UNC is a public school receiving state tax dollars. The state legislature is already meddling in the realignment business of NC schools so I'm certain they'd want to weigh in here. But to your point, yes, I think this is a waste of time when there's no financial difference between the two conference.

As a resident of North Carolina, I am totally against the state legislature getting involved. Let the schools and conferences settle this. we do not need the state government to get involved.

@@heartbreak25 I suspect that the B1G had considered UNC secured when/if it moved. It's recent swing towards the SEC would have materially affected its longer-term plans. For instance, this would explain why WASH/ORE were invited prematurely.

If you have a choice, you choose the SEC every time. Outside of OSU and Michigan, the Big10 is boring.

Outside of ND, UNC is the prize. Either league UNC would be middle tier at best in football. All other sports they would compete quite well. Academically they are Big 10 quality. UNC MBB has a long history in the tournament with the Big 10. They often have to go through the Big 10 to win championships. 1957 Beat Michigan State Semi final 3 OT's) Then beat Kansas(Wilt Chamberlain) 3OT's. Loss to Indiana in 1981 Championship(Isiah Thomas). Beat Michigan (Fab 5) 1993 Championship. 2005 Championship Beat Illinois. 2009 Championship beat Michigan State(Draymond Green). Non revenue sports Stanford is a competitor in a lot of those. Maryland has a long history with UNC. I do think the SEC wants a North Carolina team. UNC is probably the only one they would want.

a) UNC is the top expansion target of the SEC by far. b) The P2 consolidation will have a parity effect on football due to recruiting and exposure advantages.

I don’t think the BIG would want to add a boat anchor to go along with UNC. They already have too many teams to be able to featherbed an NC State-no disrespect to NC State.

NC State is a cool team with one of the best mascots in college athletics. If UNC has to pay 10 million a year to NC State like UCLA has to with Cal, I think Big Ten would add them.

@tylerbrown2700 The University of California and The University of California Los Angeles are part of the same university system. While the University of North Carolin and North Carolina State University are different entities. The dynamics are totally different.

Say what? UNC is the boat anchor. They would be in the bottom of the B1G in viewership (behind mighty Rutgers) and either last or next to last in revenue generation. Ohio State generated $125m for the B1G last year, Michigan $107m. Nebraska generated over a $100m and they were terrible. UNC didn’t even generate $40m for the ACC. In every meaningful metric, UNC would be at the bottom of the B1G. If the B1G payout was $60m and UNC generated $35-40m, they would be a $20-25m a year boat anchor. A financial liability. As for academics, the B1G rejected Cal and Stanford, two of the most academically elite schools in the country, for Oregon, who is now second from last in the B1G. Why? Because football is more important. Facts matter.

@@lancelittrell369 I believe they are a part of the same system. The North Carolina Board of Governors has most of the power when it comes to relignment right now. The board has to consider UNC, NC State and the other public universities interest when they decide their next conference for UNC.

@@505premoto This is true though many don't like it. The BIG was clear that all teams must be financially additive. That means FOX Sports decides who can even get past the first door. After that, the Presidents vote on schools. There is little evidence FOX has any interest in basketball school's so the pro-SEC UNC crowd may or may not get its wish. ESPN has to sign off and THEN the BIG Boys like Texas-Bama-OU have to decide if they are going to allow a school that denied them in the past. UNC will always be a threat to leave confernces. If the University had to force out pro-BIG factions, that means they can always return at a school with a large academic liberal-Proffesor-wing like UNC-CH. Based on current BOT actions, it appears the pro-BIG or at least "never SEC" factions still have leverage. The SEC has a significantly lower IQ all around vs. the BIG and inviting schools heavily-divided is never wise. Universities moving conferences does massive damage to a conferences strength and perception. Notice the trepidation of people that care about sports whose schools are not in the P2. Some of the posters on here LITERALLY post hundreds of times-daily to ASSURE everyone their team is in. Nothing says confidence like needing to post about your school's 100% guaranteed safety all-day-everyday. Why post 100's of times daily like some UNC fans when your team is in for sure? The only non-P2 fans I don't see freaking out are Notre Dame. That says everything about the truth doesn't it. Washington/Oregon/ UCLA (USC was always safe) posters are chill as can be on these sites while UNC fans are "so confident" they post at all hours of the night looking for confirmation-bias feedback. No matter what anyone says, as of Memorial Day 2024, Oregon/Washington are 100% safe and UNC is not.
