My subscriber blueclue57 kindly invited me to come along and visit him while in Moscow - he said he had a class on Business English. I was taken by surprise that he wanted me to be guest lecturer, but I managed to cobble a couple of notes together during an earlier part of his lesson while he was doing an exercise - actually I don't use the notes till the second half as I can't really abide speaking from notes, I always prefer to adlib - and what came out is probably the best lecture yet done by me on the Gold List System. Thankfully blueclue57 was kind enough to film it on my cam, and the Vado held out somehow. No idea how, but it did.
The message here will help enlarge on what I already stated in the two earlier discussions of the Gold List system. Clearly I couldn't stay in character as Huliganov while addressing a roomful of Russians learning English, so I've taken this out of the Second Huliganov's Russia series, which is coming up soon.
The goldlist system is free but should be attributed to me. I have started writing a book on this subject, although all that is really needed to know is freely available in these videos and on www.goldlist.eu
The system has been seen now by thousands of people and put to the test by many of them. I have received literally hundreds of mails stating that the system works for people and has saved them from wasting time and failing, or else improved their result in learning languages.
Enjoy.

For anyone learning Chinese Mandarin, and already understand the Gold List Method, I uploaded a video series on using Uncle Davey's Gold List Method for learning to read/write Chinese characters. Enjoy :D

Through a distillation ,if I do not remember a certain person in a certain tense it is easy to simply carry that word over to the next group,sometimes grouping a few of them on the same line.Usually if I remember the verb at all I remember all tenses and persons?gender etc. But the initial headlist I find it necessary to write out every thing. This in modern Hebrew is around 25 words. This is why I ask about the number of verbs as they easily take up considerable space in my headlist.

I want to ask you how many verbs should one put in the headlist? I am using the method for Hebrew and Arabic currently and with the many conjugations of each person in each tense I can barely squeeze each verb for ,lets say Hebrew,in 3 lines. I can have 8 verbs on a 25 line page this way with a line left over. In a 2500 line book, what would you recommend as far as my situation with verbs? Perhaps I should use a second headlist book for verbs only...or?

I am learning Russian and have been using a variety of means such as pimsluer, various apps, and your you tube videos of course. Should I narrow my studying to this method or add it to my current methods? Thanks, and love your videos :)

Hi How is the Goldlist book going? I think there are a lot of us out there waiting patiently for this book so we can begin to use your method to its fullest potential. Thanks.

You have to learn the gender along with the definition because it's part of the meaning.Often a native speaker will forget a word but remember the gender and use the correct form of the adjective.Then after a pause they may recall the word. In Russian the gender is usually obvious. If it's not then write a note after the word such as "(M)" for masculine. Also notate any irregularities in declensions or conjugations.

@george Ramos: Hope you still read this after a year. Could you perhaps elaborate on how musicians might apply this method? Does it involve purely the theoretical aspects of music or also practical applications. I would really like to hear someone go into this subject.

A musician of an instrument will not find it hugely usefull except for facts like what a minim and definition of crescendo or the melody of a piece. But an opera singer would be able to use it or some one who practices forein songs or full scentences in lyrics of any language

Questions: you seem to contrast the Gold List method with cramming. But other methods, for example what Gabriel Wyner describes in Fluent Forever, don't involve cramming, either. They do, however, involve images--tying the sounds of words to images. You also seem to criticize flash cards and spaced repetition methods. But with flash cards, you have more room to write examples and phrases, using the word in context. How do you do that with this method? I understand that getting frustrated and trying too hard to remember something just pushes it solidly into your short term memory and makes it less, not more, likely to go into long term memory, but comfortably and happily imagining a little visual scene for the word--this isn't stressful. And in my experience, it does make it much easier to remember, and for much longer than 14 days. As for babies, they may or may not remember words on purpose, but do we know they don't tie words to images, and that this isn't important? How do we know the visual aspect isn't important? The examples you give (driving down a road, driving through a town, the dry cleaner) involve sight, images. Also, babies get the same words used over and over and over for months by adults very happy to talk to them. We don't. So it might make sense we would need to compensate for this in some way. What do you think of spaced repetition? Do you think it doesn't work? Also, my learning method involves reading texts. I will obviously come across the words that I put in my head list in my reading of German texts. Is this a problem? You seem to describe not going over the word again as being important, to be sure it's in your long term memory, and not your short. So does that mean I have to avoid these words I put in my head list? That seems impractical, if so. Thank you for all of the time and effort you have put into your videos and research and the material you have prepared. You seem like a very caring person.

Yeah, the problem with fluent forever though, in contrast with L2->L1 Anki flashcard and the the goldlist is that a.) they focus on retranslating from L1-L2 and b.)Translation from L2-L1 s just as good as L2->pictures, c.)It's /still/ cramming and finally d.)It's a lot of complicated work to make a single card. This might seem to make sense, except that it also produces unnatural sounding speech as evidenced by some of his good languages. I've heard Gabriel's German, and while his accent is good, it's incredibely awkward and stilted the way he speaks. Almost like he deliberately memorized words and strung them together with grammar he learned. That feels super unnatural to me. The only people who seem to have gotten it and are natural are people who base their learning on input and not on complicated Anki Cards.
@caffeinated4671
@caffeinated4671 4 года назад
Don't get me wrong. Anki is _incredibely_ convenient, but after a while (especially with mature words), you start forgetting the meaning and just memorize: This flashcard means THIS etc. etc. With a pen and paper, you almost develop a connection to the words and phrase. Even though I gave up on Spanish in 2013, the mere act of writing down words physically gave me the ability to speak at an elementary level in 4 months, even though it wasn't anything to brag about, as well as understand cartoons.

Thank you very much professor for sharing your Golden List method. I am using it now to learn Russian. My question is related to the "gender" of the nouns that, as you know, is also used in Spanish, Italian, French, etc. and would affect the use of adjectives. Would you recommend to learn the "gender" along with the vocabulary? I am trying to do so but it is a bit confusing. Thank you very much again.

What is the best way to keep tabs on the progress of your ebook on the Gold List? Do you have a newsletter or a list to subscribe to or should we just check here on RU-vid? Haven't tried your method as yet as I am not sure I fully understand it. Many thanks.

Thanks. My problem is that when I look at that head list after two weeks - it's like it's the first time in my life that I'm seeing it!!! Test my memory? Hahahaha! What memory? But when it's words that I've encountered before, in class or on some video, they're obviously more familiar.

Have you tried using this goldlist method on other subjects besides language learning? I will start doing it this week to prepare for my english exams at the end of the year and if it really works I intend to experience more with it.

It's me again. Thanks so much for posting this. My difficulty is with the first distillation. If the head list is a list of completely new words and not words I've learned already I don't remember ANY of the words!!!! What do I do if I can't shave off 8 words? Group together a few words (which I can't remember to begin with) and put them on one line? Do I stand a chance of remembering them that way? It's a wee bit discouraging but I'm not giving up!

Write down expressions not words. The expression should be between 2-4 words. Next to the expression write the translation. When you do your first distillation then cover the target language expressions and look at the translation. You need to recall from your translations. Hope this helps :)

It is my understanding that you stay passive (reading and listening) in a foreign language. In order to be "activated" you must spend at most 3 days in the environment. My question is what happens when I was to converse in Mandarin with the dry cleaners down the road from my house? I have not been activated, I realize I will understand them, but will I sound like an idiot trying to speak?
@DavidJJames
@DavidJJames 8 лет назад
Possibly. Don't worry about it. They may not want to be giving free practice lessons anyway. Unless you go there don't waste time with activisation, but keep on building - first they built the great wall then they marched their soldiers up and down on it. If not, the soldiers would have got in the way of the builders.

I was wondering about how to change peoples names in Russian to their appropriate cases? I already know the first names definitely change cases because it is so common in the Russian books I have purchased, however I don't know if let's say I want to be formal and therefore need first name, middle name/patronymic, and the family name if they also should change case forms?
