There is an anecdote from Prof. Einstein's life. Once he was teaching a classroom and got to a deadend in deriving a particular proof. He left that on one side, started next topic, halfway through that discussion of that unrelated topic, he stopped, walked over to the unfinished proof and erased a few steps, fixed an error and went forward to finish it. In a less dramatic fashion, we all have been through situations where we tried to locate a missing key bunch but failed and moved on, suddenly it flashes to us where we left it. Even though we think of the three states of Waking/Dreaming/Sleeping as three discrete states of consciousness, that is not a correct observation. Waking state has active dreaming going on and there is also sleep in it. What I mean by it is that there is ONE or TWO major streams of thought that are 'conscious' to us, hundreds of subconscious dreaming processes are going on some of which will be picked up for communication and action by the conscious mind. Likewise there are thousands of modules of mind that are quiet (sleeping). One can become aware of this by systematic slowing down via meditation and self-watching (which is essentially dissociating from the current thought and its imagined thinker). Those who tame their dreaming mind to put it to such creative use have mastered how to let it run background creative search. Composers, scientists, performers, actors, even lecturers to various extent have mastered what Milton Erickson points out here. These have essentially learned how to get into trances where external distractions are removed so they can play around with selected goals, percepts and retrieve related memories. Those who tame their waking mind and dreaming mind also to become quiet can see further than such creative individuals because they can distinguish between what is really out there and what is imagined by mind. These are freed from the major trance of waking and minor trances of dreaming or creativity and have a unanchored awareness that is fluent. They know that the conscious mind is simply the communicating and acting interface and the subconscious is perception, projection and reaction. Possibility of deeper perception, cognition and even action lie in the so called unconscious. When conscious and subconscious impulses are kept aside, unconscious can surface these. I said taming the waking mind, as though it is an activity done by the conscious mind. In reality, the conscious mind starts practice just to show its strong intention, once this is repeated enough, it will see how impossible it is for it to be free from its own trap. It surrenders, (hence meditations and prayers emphasize relaxation, surrender or giving up) and the unconscious takes over the task and tames the conscious and dreaming processes. In one of the videos I saw Dr.Erickson beautifully point out that auto-hypnosis to be effective done by the unconscious! For meditation to be, the meditator should fade away.
