Thank you, the passport applications are an untapped source for me. However, where an ACCURATE DOB is concerned, I have several relatives in my family tree who filled out forms with various dates of birth for themselves and their children. Presumably illiteracy and far less importance being placed on a person's date of birth in previous centuries seem to be the culprits there. It would be nice to nail down if someone died at 98 or 104, but birth years on these records are unreliable, in my experience.

Not only date of birth, but date of death! My grandmother was buried near her childhood home, far from where the family lived at the time. It probably took several years for her stone to be updated, and when it was, they put "1957" as her date of death. I had been told by a couple family members that she died in 1952, but I had no documentation. She appeared in the 1952 city directory. And the 1953 directory. Then, in the 1955 directory, it had "Cooper, Sarah, wife of Walter A (died October 2, 1952),". Three years after she died the city directory gave the EXACT DATE of her death, and it was *published two years before the date on her tombstone!*

Be aware that Old city directories were not created by computers over night. IT took time to accumulate the information, then to type set, proof read, print, bind, distribute. So the information included could have obviously been outdated. My relatives were in a city directory in Philadelphia, but had relocated to MONTANA then to A PLOT OF LAND in Los Angeles, CA by the time the PHILADELPHIA DIRECTORY was printed. I accidentally came across a listing of two of the daughter's marriages in Los Angeles , CA which CAUSED me to seek out and discover the father had purchased a sq mile of farm land from the U.S LAND OFFICE for $10. HIS wife died on the train ride out. A family of performers the daughters were headliners mentioned in Local papers in Montana and Los Angeles. ANOTHER relative listed in a Philadelphia directory disappeared from census records. I CAME across his son's Obituary which in one paper mentioned his father at age 60 had enlisted in the Civil war and was killed in battle in GA. So searching his military pension record for his family it revealed marriage records in IRELAND, maiden names, muster roles.

One of the easiest ways to do a city directory is copy last years and make the updates that you know about.
