Uncovering Thailand’s Historical Secrets: Hiking to Thailand’s Past

We hiked up a mountain to see Thailand in the past. Khao Pla Ra, in Uthai Thani Province, Central Thailand is a mountain known to very few foreigners or Thais and visited by even less.
A steep hike of approximately 2 kilometres each way is rewarded by an unimpeded views of genuine, ancient cave paintings that are between 3000 and 5000 years old.
This hike was the final part of a trip I organised to celebrate my 60th birthday recently.
Here's a playlist of my popular videos about Thailand in the 80's and 90's

In 50 years, that is the first time I have EVER bailed on a walk, hike or climb. I think waking up, guzzling 4 coffees and smoking 2 large herbal treats probably wasn't the best prep for me mate haha. Last time we did it, it wasn't difficult; this time I hit a heat wall and I thought I was going to explode!! It felt like there was no air or the air was thick like gravy. It was quite a struggle getting back down but a friendly ranger at the bottom showed me to a trough of cold water, some of which I poured all over my head, and gave me some bottled water too. After that and a wee sit down, I felt great again. Gutted as I love it in the cave up top, although it looked pretty humid and full of flies this time. I'll go back again in cool season Karl.

As I said on the video, you must have felt bad to turn back as I know how much you love that place. I must admit that I never noticed your prep work lol. It was definitely hot on the way up and the mosquitoes were a real nuisance at the top, much worse than our first visit. I do remember how happy you and that ranger were when we got back. Cheers

Thanks for sharing, what a unique treat! Yes, it was a lot different back then. I read the book "The Buddha in the Jungle" a while back, and it was describing what it was like in modern Thailand even 100-150 years ago - thick jungle everywhere, rivers the main travel routes. Quite incredible.

watching the moment you realize jim had left the trek was an instant reality check. on all these type adventures i envision a simple muscle pull or turn of the ankle. a point where the joy of the expedition quickly turns to stopping and deciding this conquest will happen on some other day.

@karlsthailand
@karlsthailand Год назад
Schoolboy error indeed. I'd actually bought 2 litres of water to take up and a NP Ranger stooped us at the bottom and asked if we'd checked in at the NP HQ/ This would have been an expensive pain tbh. so I convinced him that I'd done it before, had a gps with the route loaded (True) and had packed plenty of water...except that I'd forgot. Luckily it wasn't a particularly long hike and I do seem more camel like than some of my friends. Cheers

I spent months visiting cave painting sites in Southern Africa & have also visited sites here in Australia. Personally, I find them to be quite spiritual places, even though I'm atheist as far as religion goes. Thanks for sharing. Same age as you BTW. I hope to do some hiking in Thailand in the near future.
