Bulk cargoes can pose a variety of hazards during transportation, handling, and storage. Some of the hazards of bulk cargoes are:
Fire and explosion: Certain bulk cargoes like coal, petroleum coke, and grain, are highly flammable and can ignite easily, leading to a fire or explosion. Even non-flammable cargoes like iron ore and fertilizer can create combustible dust clouds, which can also ignite and cause a fire or explosion.
Structural damage to ships: The uneven distribution of bulk cargoes can cause structural damage to the ship. If the cargo is not properly loaded and secured, it can shift during transportation, leading to a loss of stability, hull damage, or even capsizing.
Environmental pollution: Some bulk cargoes like chemicals, oils, and gases can cause environmental pollution if they spill or leak during transportation or storage. This can have serious consequences for marine life, ecosystems, and human health.
Health hazards: Certain bulk cargoes like grain, coal, and cement can cause respiratory problems if the dust is inhaled. Chemicals and gases can also be hazardous to human health if they are not properly handled.
Corrosion and contamination: Certain bulk cargoes like salt and fertilizers can cause corrosion of the ship's structures and machinery, while others like chemicals and food products can cause contamination if they leak or spill.
To minimize the risks associated with bulk cargoes, proper precautions must be taken during loading, transportation, and unloading. This includes proper stowage, securing, and ventilation of the cargo, as well as regular inspections and maintenance of the ship's structures and machinery.
