As a Ford trained mechanic /tech I can honestly tell you that this v6 along with most Ford engines are good engines in a very poor state of tune. If you want to really restore and make this better then first thing you need to do is have it tuned by someone that knows Ford ecu tuning. The v6 is far more capable of an engine than Ford allowed it to leave the factory.

Yea I was already wondering. My V70 2,4 5cillinder does 200hp. So This engine would seem to me like under powered for its size.. Now I understand ;-)

I was hoping the top comment would be about the scam price of the obd tool and not an exaggerated line about poor tuning. VERY POOR ford workmanship in engines has an american twang to it, 8 litres of 3 whole digits of horses. But then, you were trained by the worst company if they really do make you think the better side of tuning is terrible. Think about it. This is an era around 1.6 turbos and cosworths. It's not just how powerful the engine is, but how long it lasts, how cool it needs to be and so on. Ford at the base is like all others, about profits and minimising accountability mixed with horrendous parts prices. I have owned enough and been around enough owners to know as a customer, what is important to customers, what is important to the companies and a keen ear for the reality in between. The whole industry is a scam with very few people telling the real truth. :)

Takes me back to my car rental days in the 1990s. I used to use one of these as a company car. They were all blue and W reg, so I wouldn't be surprised if I have spanked this one at some point! I actually preferred the ST24 to the ST200 as it was more 'subtle' styling. The engine note on these cars is slightly effeminate - but they used to go quite well. Bit of torque steer on the manual trans cars when really gunning it through the gearbox. We had a few automatic ST24s which I much preferred. I think the suspension on the ST24 was slightly more compliant than the ST200 also? Not sure. Great ergonomics and nicely hugging seats. Loved them.

One very imperative job to make that inlet set up work properly. Take the upper and lower off, clean them out and replace the intake pipe from maf to tb removing the 2 crankcase breathers. Instead divert them in to a catch tank as the factory design basically sucks oil vapour straight in to the inlet and gums everything up reducing power and efficiency. I did that to my old st24 which I also fitted with st200 upper inlet and st200 twin air feed air box, larger injectors, full exhaust system including manifolds and remap. That was a fun car 😉

I live in the states and owned a Contour SVT about 15 years ago. I loved the car so much I modified it with a full suspension, brakes and replaced the 2.5L with a Jaguar 3.0L. I port and polished both the intake and exhaust portion of the heads and added ceramic headers and full racing exhaust system. It produced 312 HP at the crank and was a great car to drive. Unfortunately the transmission gave up as the standard 5-speed manual box could only handle about 165 HP. As they say, enjoy it while it lasts.
@Viperman200221
@Viperman200221 Год назад
The 2.5L Duratech was also in the 2nd gen Mazda MPV here in the states. Although it only made around 170hp. I had one for a couple of years. It sounded mean at high revs with the dual runner intake. Mine was a little bit extra loud since the exhaust was 2 1/2" straight piped from the manifolds back. The drone cruising on the highway was terrible. The flex pipe rusted through and hit the ground while I was driving it one day so I replaced the exhaust pipes the cheapest way possible.

Cylinders 3 and 5 were weak spots leading to headgasket failure on some. I had 2 mondeo v6's an si and a ghia x. The waterpumps had plastic impellers which would fail leading to overheating. Aftermarket pumps had metal ones. The inlet manifold runner control was located in a stupid place above the exhaust and would occasionally fail due to the solder coming away due to extreme heat exposure. I relocated mine by the battery. I had fun with that engine though, nice smooth motors with decent grunt on wide throttle. I used to achieve low 30's most of the time but mpg in low teens if you hammer that engine! A friend of mine had a mondeo ghia x automatic, smooth lazy motoring...

Good tips as I have the car at 300k km (not daily driver anymore), my water pump and intake manifold runner failed once only at around half of the mileage. I haven't got issues with the manifold, but with the idle control valve control. Are these aftermarket water pumps still available?
@simonjohnhinton1938
@simonjohnhinton1938 4 года назад
@@optimalkfrt yes just make sure the impeller is metal not plastic, look on ebay. A good motor factors should be able to get one. A close pal of mine has an st200 with a failing headgasket characterised by a ticking noise. Commonly called the 'tick of death' this is caused by the headgasket 'venting' and sooner or later those combustion gases find there way into the cooling system causing airlock and overheating issues. If I had known at the time the waterpump internals were made of plastic I would have changed them. Once the v6 engines cook you can virtually guarantee headgasket failure!

There's one good explanation in this video (variable intakes), but I hope people aren't under any delusions that that technology was exotic or new for the ST200 engine. Variable intakes have been around since the 80s. Connecting it with the V12s is a well-known trick; this video fails to get into the fascinating background of this engine, and how it was never a Ford design in the first place; the engine design started with Cosworth and Porsche, ended up with Cosworth owning the rights to it, and licensing the design to Ford. Instead we get a video with about 30 seconds of meaningful content, a lot of fluff, and an ad for a dumb app.

Looking forward to seeing the series of vids about this!! I've owned two ST200's myself with the 2nd being a Limited Edition saloon. Beautiful engines and you have to hear them with just cats and no boxes on! Sounds mint. Also get the throttle body, UIM and LIM cleaned and slap fresh o.e gaskets on. Amazing how clogged they get and how those engines respond when you clean it. Just watch the now brittle inj connectors! They have tendancy to snap but replacements are cheap enough, just a pain in the arse to rewire 😂 Ohh and the white clip that holds the rod on to open those secondaries. Sod to find on Ford ecat for a replacement. Lol

Great cars the limited edition model. With the dash an two tone leather. Should of brought my friends that spent £1000s on it an ended up selling for peanuts £800

I owned the US version in standard tune for about 12 years from new. That 4000 rpm kick was always fun. Manual trans and no driver help besides ABS. My only issue was that that car always felt nose heavy and less agile than it might have been.

I love V6s such even and creamy power. The Maserati V6 that was fitted in the Citroen SM was properly nice (when it worked).

Always had issues with those warning lights coming on. Was always abs sensors and/or rings. New outer CV's and rear hubs sorted it. Never had it as a dashboard short circuit strangely.

I am looking forward to this series but i got a gut feeling it's going to be dragged out based on this video,,,,,,throwing loads of facts & figures out for no reason & the only work done on the car was to plug in a diagnostics gadget for product placement for the sponsor! Please please don't drag it out?

Ford contour and mercury mystique in canada. We had a contour but it only had the 4 cylinder. Ended up being a pretty good for us. Died at about 280k.

You know it's been so long since I've seen a Mondeo I actually forgot the 2.5 duratec. Ford loved those variable intakes and used it on a few different engines. Both 4s and v6s. The end user has some issues with it... not necessarily because of the design but because of poor execution. But they could be fixed. I think Nissan and a few other global producers used them too.

Wait so over there it's called The Ford Mondeo. And here in the US it's called the Ford contour. That's pretty cool 👍

The duratec 2.5 and 3.0 were also part designed by Porsche and the ecoboost 3.5 is derived from the duratec 3.0 v6
