Every time you rub a stone that won’t make a decent gem, I always think about what could be made from it. One idea that keeps popping into my head is making them into ball shapes that look like planets or scene stones. With all the colors there, including the sand, they would make beautiful stones for earthy looking jewelry.

@exidy-yt
@exidy-yt 3 года назад
That's the kind of chunk I would hope could be sold to novice opal-cutters for practice on, you are unlikely to get anything but extremely tiny bits of precious opal out of it, but if you work at it you could get some, a couple hundred dollars worth maybe. Not worth it for someone of Justin's skill and supply line, but more then worth it to build skill at cutting out and shaping/polishing.
@kizzlebizzle9312
@kizzlebizzle9312 3 года назад
Ooh, that sounds like a fun way to get into the hobby that might not be too expensive! Where would a novice be able to buy something like that please?
@exidy-yt
@exidy-yt 3 года назад
@@kizzlebizzle9312 Speaking as just such a novice, I bought a starter cutting and grinding wheel set from Amazon, as well as a couple of bulk-lots of cheap hydrophane opal from Ethiopia to practice on, larger chunks so I don't waste any good opal while I practice. I also bought a dremel and a few other inexpensive tools. Cost about $300cdn. I'll get a real coarse and fine grinding wheel when I am ready to move on to actual gem-quality (Lightning Ridge) opal. Unfortunately I've just moved to a place with no indoor working area, but once the weather turns nicer in a month or so I should be able to set up a nice outdoor working area and start building skills. All the best to you if you decide to get into this as well!

After all the years of me being a rock hound and finding my first geod filled with what looked like chocolate chips in a big white rock which turned out to be dark garnet, my first amethyst and tourmaline being found in california, to me working with gems in my later years it never stops to amaze me of the colors mother earth and natural science gives us to find like a scavenger hunt. Hit or miss its all still a miracle. I still say you should bust up the ones you cant use as full stones for inlay or to put in little vile pendants or hour glass. For stones like that why not just leave them to sit in a hydrochloric acid solution for a few days before attempting to put them on the wheel? The hydrochloric acid should dissolve almost all of the surrounding sandstone without bothering the potch or opal.

Justin, as I understand it Opal is created by water seeping through layers of silica, that’s why 95% of opal is found in Australia where there was an inland sea that receded over millions of years just like in Ethiopia. I’m also really passionate about space travel and Mars in particular and I don’t know if maybe you watched Perseverance land on the Martian surface this week? Half of Mars was covered in water at some point but now it’s barren and dry, that water must’ve seeped through the cracks in a similar way and now I’m dreaming of Martian opal. Are you aware of any reasons there wouldn’t be any over there? And if there if, how cool would a Martian opal necklace be?! Think about it, it may have formed in different ways under lower air pressure, different mineral composition etc, I really want to see the extraterrestrial gems we will find in the next few decades. And I hope you get to cut a gem from an extraterrestrial rock at some point, that would make me so happy.
@blackopaldirect
@blackopaldirect 3 года назад

@@blackopaldirect I got my fingers crossed, maybe Elon Musk will get his starship there in the next decade. Or, closer to home for you maybe rocket lab from that beautiful launch site in New Zealand succeeds in their missions to Venus. I don’t expect any opal there necessarily, that’s probably way too fragile given the circumstances but the pressure, volcanism and basalt crust will probably produce some really weird crystals. But as far as opal is concerned, Mars probably had its entire northern hemisphere covered in liquid water billions of years ago. I hope you get your hands on some Martian rocks someday ;)

I have been watching your videos for a very long time. It has.. kinda been hard to watch newer uploads with all the added music, it's gimmicky and is just like all the other platforms and content creators. I've been watching your videos because they are very relaxing and they feel authentic; as if I'm really in the room cutting the stones myself. I have to mute these videos now, and it's a bummer, but that's okay if I have to. I know others really like the music and I respect that, but it takes away from a quiet working atmosphere. I don't want my one opinion to offend you Justin, here's my point. If you like puting the music on your videos because YOU like it- keep doing it. But if you are trying to appeal to OTHER people by adding music, I think you're taking away from the essense of your workspace. No matter, keep up the great quality, videos, and positive atmosphere. I never really cared for rocks/minerals/gems/etc until I found this channel. You really bring excitement to your videos. Keep up the good work Mr. Sin. ;)

Those two crystals are more or less exactly the kind of opal I hope to buy once I have the money! Fascinating to see a clump like that dissected, thanks for humouring us all and using the dremel ;D

My favorite gemstone! (Right next to fire agate and ammolite.) It's awesome to see the artistry that goes into cutting these gems. It seems like such a peaceful profession.

Hi Justin, Would you perhaps sell the piece that has too much sand in it please - I'd be interested for healing work. Other people too?

Watching you gives me more of an idea of "how to" but having only been exposed to polishing other stones, I was afraid to get into opal, because if you ground too deep, could loose the color and I didn't want to go there because of the lack of experience I had. I enjoyed watching you.

You are quite the entertainer 😂 as well as a master gemologist. Thank you for the big smiles and some stress you give me!! Seeing what the miners go through, and then see how you take a rock with color and make beautiful pieces. Such a remarkable process for this beautiful gem! Opals ROCK!😂😂😂

The stone is beautiful but I think it's absolutely ridiculous how we play so much value on something that is naturally occurring in nature. It's meant to be enjoyed by everyone not gobbled up and have $25,000 price tags placed on it. The human race is......
