I have several extremely low end swords leftover from my Kult of Athena mystery crates, so I figured I'd disassemble them and see what they look like without a hilt.

Fun video! I agree with your plan to use the questionable bits to practice developing some crafty skills. If you've got the time and a few tools you might unveil a hidden talent for blade customizing! It's basically how I started, working with junk swords and knives or old tools to see what I could make. Definitely post any results!

I often go to the museum replicas clearance sale when they have it and I've picked up blades and hilt components over the years and assembled quite a few unique swords. And while sometimes in collecting we all get a dud/lemon of a sword it's not always a complete loss as one can cannibalize them & make something better... Love the vid idea! Definitely something different

That sounds cool, you should post a video showing what you put together

@@tomothybahamothy I did a 3 vids on my "Frankenswords" (a term Eric Husain used for them) which are mostly swords I bought at the MRL sale that were pre-assembled from mixed parts. I have one with a later 1500s blade mounted to a generic "Viking" hilt, also a rapier like blade attached to a hilt that has a fantasy tsuba guard & is somewhere between a sword cane & a pillow sword and a few others. In the 1st vid I included some of the swords I assembled myself from parts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8f-txVxjB2o.htmlsi=UHVXSTogux4OgQs5

Surprisingly the tangs on those swords don't look too bad. Everything else from the geometry to the durability is just wrong though haha!

Lol. I said this in your other video. KOA is quick to ship junk and quick to take money on customs. I am truly frustrated with their lack of communication for an Albion sword I ordered nearly two years ago. Their one response to me contradicted Albion's claim. So I'll give them a few more months before I take action.

So the color on the tang, I just finished the oxy acetylene torch cutting section of my welding program, these cheap swords show evidence of their tangs being simple torch cut out of sheet metal. The whole blade is probably simply torch cut by hand from sheet then shaped.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the insight!

If one put in a little work & some extra parts one xould probably make functional weapons from those.

Nice vid! The "viking" might be from one of the random Indian forges. As far as the discoloration at the shoulders and tangs, my guess would be those parts just weren't polished after heat treat. It's hard to say for sure without seeing it in person and because of the oxidation, but the colors seem normal for tempered steel. Obviously without further testing there's no way to know if the heat treat is good otherwise.

Depeeka is well known for the quality of their work. They have a well deserved reputation. ( isn’t sarcasm wonderful?)

If you're not confident on doing your project blades yourself. Then you could ask the blacksmith to do for you and send them the materials
@alientude

I'd rather not spend money on these questionable blades - I have no clue what specific steel they are, the quality of the heat treat, etc. It would make far more sense to just commission something direct from a smith than have them work on these. If nothing else, I can use them for sharpening practice.

I have a few high end viking age sword and no way the one sword you have is a viking age sword. Extremely bad replica. I thought it was of Scottish origin looks wise.
@alientude
@alientude 2 года назад
Oh yeah definitely, I only called it a "viking" sword because the pommel is clearly an attempt to look like one. It's not even remotely close to an accurate replica though.
