Me and my family used to watch this movie, Rhinestone, and Cannery Row all the time when HBO came standard with cable back in the early-mid 80's. My mom and I still quote iconic lines from this one like, "Ze pearl eez in ze rivah!" My favorite scene is when the little guy tumbles down the staircase, gets up, and starts climbing back to the top after saying, "I forgot my beer!"😂😂😂
So did we. I always remembered the beer milkshake from Cannery Row. When I was older I tried it. It was absolutely disgusting lol. I also tried milk and Pepsi from Laverne and Shirley 🤦🏻♀️ I wasn’t a bright child lol.
So the first time I watched this was in college 20 years ago over Christmas break. Our dorm had a movie library that we could check out movies from. When I saw this movie had Chevy Chase and Carrie Fisher in it, I thought, eh why not? After I watched it I remember thinking, "What the hell did I just watch?" So I watched it again... Incidentally that was also the first time I saw Caddyshack not on television... the uncensored version was quite the eye opener.
On my list of guilty pleasure films (along with Rhinestone, the first Deuce Bigalow, and Dirty Grandpa.) Interesting fact: Chevy Chase met his third wife making this film and they are still married today (nearly 35 years)
I saw this in the theatre when I was a kid. My mom dropped my brother, myself and my sister off of the theatre and sat in the coffee shop waiting for us afterward.
What I love about this movie is that I love that it parody’s that rumor about the midgets being crazy in the hotel during the making of the wizard of oz it’s genius
Just watched this again after many years (also loved it as a child when I first saw it on HBO back in '82). It's a dark comedy, to be sure--though it masquerades as screwball. It's still hilarious. :)
I gotta see this. I remember it vaguely back then but never actually saw it at the cinema. Looks good and full of laughs!! Thanks for showing the trailer!
I have not seen this movie in 35 yrs i did not know chevy chase was in it.

Definitely a weird but original and brave idea concept for a film. Remember seeing it on HBO back in the day,and no doubt was attracted to it cuz of the beauty and fame of Carrie Fisher, which at time couldn’t see her in any other role than Leia + had Chevy Chase who was funniest comic actor at that time. For the most part it does fall flat but it’s slapstick attention to details of 1930s Hollywood period is well done considering it was made in early 80s. Perhaps if it were viewed today it might be better for its uniqueness . But yes what I always remember and stands out is Fishers characters beauty.
I heard that industry thought that this was going to be the big hit of summer '81. They also thought that the flop will be a certain Steven Spielberg film starring Harrison Ford. 😂
Probably because it would be a horror film about how God awful the actors were injured or had gotten deathly ill from incidents filming on set and would tarnish the legacy of the original film
I believe seeing this as a kid is the reason I always found " little people " hilarious...... or I found this to be hilarious because of the " little people " in it. 🤔🙄🤷♂️🤣
I think I'm experiencing a mandela effect. I remember a little person in this movie that was not quite a main character, he was a good guy that was trying to get his break. He had a Gene Wilder kinda look. But I didn't see him in the trailer, and doesn't match any photos on IMDB. Anyone remember this guy? I need to watch the movie again now. Been at least 30 years. Edit: Found it, Cork Hubbert as Rollo.
Most of the people in this film are Dwarves, when in the original "Wizard of Oz" all of the actors were Midgets and there wasn't even one 'Dwarf" in the whole film. The reason for this is that "Midgets" were cured with a growth hormone when they are born, so except for third world countries, "Midgets" no longer exist.
I never saw this movie when I was younger and wasn't even aware of it until now, so obviously I have no childhood memories of it to give it a better grade then it deserves. Movie looks really dates and bad. On a positive it has Carrie Fisher in the lead female role.
I've heard Carrie , Mark, and Harrison say that a downside to being in star wars was not getting recognized for any of their other roles. Because of that I've been making a point of seeing their other movies. I was hesitant about seeing this one because of the bad reviews but ended up laughing and enjoying myself and wondering what the hell those critics were thinking. That was up until the end scene, which was horrible. It's as if Harry Hurwitz wrote a decent screen play, then lost a card game to a rival screen writer who then purposely wrote one the most confusing, corny, cliche endings ever.
I was worried about seeing this movie also, since Chevy and Carrie both expressed their shame in making it. I found myself laughing and enjoying the quirkiness regarding the movie (I am also biased to movies about Hollywood in the Golden Age). Chevy is a good straight man, and Carrie is lovely to look at, and pretty funny, but Billy Barty steals the show as the Nazi spy (He was also involved in casting those 150 small actors due to his standing as a high profile short actor and an advocate for short actors.) FY!- Anyone who sees Under the Rainbow should also see the Jeff Bridges comedy Hearts of the West
