it was a relaxing sunday working unsupervised again. started up the D6-9U known as the Bismark to to drag a few trails with the chain drag. the Bismark and The Hood were sunk together while pulling empty sleighs. for being under water for 3 years, it did not take much to get them up and going. the fuel system has never been changed or serviced at a professional injection repair shop. the funny sound when running is what makes both cats unique and serves as a reminder to being under water. thansk
this is a daily updated channel from the Kingdom in Northern Manitoba Canada where every day is a struggle to survive in the new world we now live in. the life style of recycling, re-using, re-purposing plus living with no money is what the Kingdom has been all about for the last 28 years. we have been doing it long before it became a cool lifestyle. thansk

when the cylinder head is warm it makes starting a lot easier, i have a ether sniff hole in the air intake pipe that i gave a little sniff to excite the motor. i learned a long time ago not to sniff through an oil bath air cleaner. thansk

Next summer in your spare time, find some junk iron and build a tripod base with a swivel for the airplane so it can be a wind indicator. Three I beams and a two ton truck hub for the swivel.

the Kingdom is too well treed in and it would be hard for the plane to get the right amount of wind. they did make a wind vane with a dc-3 up in the yukon at that museum thansk

I think they had plows like that in Kansas because of the winter of 49. If you think about it there isn't a wind break between you and Kansas or the Texas panhandle either. That's why they have Blue Northers.

When I was there, they had some pretty big snowfalls which were compounded by the drifting. Also, it was cold with serious windchills. Take care.

fluffy snow is nice. our snow seems to have a crust so the leaf blower does not work same as the air hose from the shop. thansk

Them old cats where probably built in Peoria il back in the day I’m 30 miles from there I have worked inside most of the old plants on the trash compactors . There’s a lot of history there 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

Anyone who isn't impressed with your fleet and your abilities, should check their pulse. I certainly am impressed ( could be the loader, not sure, lol ). And something else that impresses me almost as much as every machine in your fleet, is the fleet of buckets, cans, objects to keep the rain/snow/birds out of the pipe.

yes make sure you buy the carter diesel fuel pump, it last longer. i even pump and electric fuel pump on the 922 loader which helps big time. thansk

I/Me 2nd. After water got into 1 cylinder of my 383 V8 from a hole accidently drilled thru the water jacket into the exhaust port in the head, I went to start the engine and it almost made 1 revolution and stopped with a slam. When I pulled the piston rod out of #6 (3rd from front pass side) the rod was bent in an "S" like you couldn't believe. I had no idea a stock Chrysler 383 engine had rods that would hold up to that! I always thought they were cast iron, but couldn't have been if they bent like that one did. ben/ michigan 50°F down at the bottom of the mitten.

Great videos Joey, Im retired farmer here in Washington State, We run lots of cat tractors and 9 U D6's back in the day. I see no top rollers on the cats I'm guessing the rollers went bad so cheapest fix is mount a wood timber. And thank you Sir Rodney for keeping there supply chain going

I think he said top rollers would freeze up and wear out the links so wood was used to save the on wear.

the wooden top roller is common because a steel round roller only get built up with snow and ice not to turn. then it becomes a flat sided roller. yes lots of these were used as ag cats too thansk

I have a lot of time on td25 I liked them more then d8 you had two speed steering put lever in low one in high and push full blade around a corner dam cats you were aways pulling on steering lever, they would push fine in a strait line, after ten hours yanking on them levers you would go home with hurting arms.

Thanks for the history of the Hood and the Bismark Cats. They both sunk but at least werent torpedoed and hit by shells. Amazing after 3 years underwater you got then running and doing work. Thanks for the video. 13:56

No drama starting the Bismark. How do you keep the wind shield so clear? It is 1/4"- 6mm plexiglas? A quiet day in the snow. How were the cats rescued? By diving? Whatever, it started easily and dragged the trails,purring away through the trees and up a hill, very quiet and restful. See ya tomorrow😎

this one does not have the plexiglass put in. plexiglass and paint were hard to come by during the great lock downs. now very expensive. they were salvaged the normal way with hooking a cable on and start dragging thansk

we have the canvas to bring the heat from the motor back to the operator. it gets quite warm with the windshield blocking the wind and bugs, lol thansk

The Cat tractors sort of came down with the Thunderbird Syndrome. Is the 5 tractor similar p/w ratio to your 6’s? Would it be suitable for sled freighting? I realize there is not a lot of sled freighting now, but some people still freight with horses, so anything is possible. Thanks for the education and take care.

caterpillar only had the d4 and d6 as good winter freighting cats. the d5 was an odd ball back in the day. the IH cats were td-6-9-18 were the best ones. the td-14 was the odd ball with not being a good winter freighting cat. up here in the last 15 years, less and less is going on in the wilderness. the american lodges are basicaly no more and mineral exploration as all but died off. thansk

I’ve sit on a D6 9U a little. I’m pretty sure it was a dry clutch model (a little older than your wet clutch). The newer D6 flat tracks seem larger, and the D6 high sprocket is huge. I used to sit on the side box of one of those to ride out to my machine on one job. My IH experience was just a little in the late ‘60’s. I got to sit on a fairly new TD15 (electric start), and a TD20 (gas start, diesel run, cable blade). I’ve only seen the D5 in pictures in ads, but it looks close to the size of the D6 9U. Actually the dozer I was most comfortable with was a D8 with cable pan. Did any John Deere or Case dozers figure into the winter freighting scheme? Thanks for your consideration. Would use the 9U's for field work but it still had the pony motor on for starting the diesel . To listen to the clang and bang all day long was something.

Top fuel drag racing engines will hydraulic if they drop a cylinder. The volume of fuel going into the cylinder is unreal. Causese the engine to blow into pieces taking out the blower and carbon fiber body.

thank you, only plugged in for 3 hours which was not very long for the size of the big motor. as long as the cylinder head is warm they will start. thansk

A D6 9U, the bare tractor alone, not including blade, winch, cable, or any comfort accessories, is about 17,000 lbs.

Huber fans...can be rotated to suit the season . Flip them to pull in and tarp up the operators area , your golden in the cold !

we live so far north they only sell us #1 diesel year round. we just a little fuel conditioner and a splash of 2 stroke oil to lube things up. thansk

I run semi synthetic oil and extra oil heaters and block heaters they have been good to me 🤞 take er easy
