In February 2014, Undercliff Drive suffered landslides that took away access to local buildings & a caravan park.
Local residents have been messed around for 2 years by the Isle Of Wight Council regarding getting repairs done.
After a while they rebuilt a single lane of road themselves from the western end allowing access to vehicles once more, (Shown at end of video.) However the council closed the road again after just days and put barriers in place..
Since closing the road made by residents there has been excuse after excuse why works can't go ahead to have that end done officially so people can once again have access to their homes & business.
(The access road put in by the residents is meanwhile still closed and in just as good condition as the day it was finished.)
Official works are supposed to be starting at the western end shortly at time of posting this. (March 2016)
But after the many ridiculous excuses given to the affected residents by the council for not carrying out any works, it wouldn't surprise me if that trend continues further..

I agree, this road must be reinstated. At the moment it is just another nail in the coffin for Isle of Wight tourism. The darned councils need to realise that the more they leave things like this, the worse it will be in the long run. it saddens me, i have been visiting the island all my life, it is always a pleasure, but every time i come down something else is being left to rot, or yet another toilet is closed. It is so annoying to see the hard work of past generations being left to rot and decay. If this had happened 50 years ago it would have been sorted by now. It's a major tourist route, when i go from Sandown or Shanklin to somewhere on the south west coast, i would always take the coast road. Stopping at Ventnor along the way, but now i find myself cutting across through Wroxhall and bypassing Ventnor completely. And come to think of it i do not think i have been to the Buddle since the road closed. The council need to sort it out.

3 years on from your comment and still no chance of the road reopening. The lighthouse has closed to the public now too. This very wet winter has caused a huge amount of smaller scale erosion on the island. I recently walked all along the beach from Blackgang to Brook and the amount of freshly fallen cliff was alarming. Great chunks the size of cars on the beach and mini landslips everywhere.

@@bigmoncrief60713 years on from your comment and its still a little footpath thing there, i guess thats all the council are gonna do....

2024 and we're still seeing landslips and the road isn't restored. It's clear they have no intentions on improving anything here and they won't complain when it all goes because they like their pay cheques more.

That fencing at 5:02 was still there this summer when I walked that road - yet this road was completed some time ago.I guess it's a steep drop and there's not much else they can do?! All the roads / paths down to Puckaster Cove at Niton end are blocked off too due to slippage.

The buddleia has set in good and proper along there now. Yes, Puckaster path closed. Such a shame..

Yes - noticed the buddleia a couple of years back - not sure I spotted any butties though which was disappointing. Only way into to Puckaster is via the beach of by parachute! I was walking this road when they were working on it and it was a right mess for 2/3 years. What happened to that nice blue / green sign. I mean all the bloody bus stops are still there yet there's no hope of any bus going down there as it would simply have to turn back.

Squirrels rule the undercliff now. No road.

Has there been a further movement on this stretch or is it exactly the same?
@Oske.images

They have been checking to measure any movement.. But to me, it looks exactly the same. The only difference being that the local residents built a single lane western access from Niton.. (Only to have the council close it as soon as they found out.)

2022 and all we have is a narrow path, it is pathetic really.

I will upload a video response by an expert who says that this road can be saved. but he warned it will cost big money. it must be reopened as the road up through past st Lawrence old church is not built for such amount of traffic .it is a major through road!
@Oske.images

+ISLE OF WIGHT ARCHIVE Agreed. Not only a major through road. But a very picturesque one too.We know someone who works at St Catherine's Lighthouse who was saying visitor numbers have taken a huge hit since this route between Ventnor, St Lawrence, and Niton was lost...It should be fixed whatever it takes.
