Underconsumption core? Not the fact that corporate profits risen in orders of magnitude while employee pay has barely, barely inched forward over the past few decades? Kk. And us not spending every penny we dont have is causing economic slowdown... I swear they're trying dumb-ss excuses on us to see what sticks at this point...

To me this story sounds like an inside job of corporations trying to frighten us into buying useless crap we don't need. To me it's just smart to hold off on wasteful spending. I drive a 15 year-old car and though it would be nice to drive a newer vehicle, I'm happier with a paid off car. Keeping up with the Joneses is what got us into this mess.

Or they genuinely are just trying to not consume so much. I was guilty of overspending during covid(like 9k on clothes and other goods) but now got sold most of it and really evaluated what I needed. I get only what I need and it helps keep my apartment from being cluttered and messy. I can afford to buy a lot more but not doing so is saving me a lot of money. In the end these material things really don't provide much value like the bare essentials. Less consumption is better for the wallet and environment.

@@korlu01 Economics would disagree. More consumption leads to inflation but also higher stock prices. So unless you have a large vestment in the stock market, it's actually not good for the average American who does not own stock. If we commit to reducing consumption, sure the "numbers" of our economy would take a hit like GDP and CPI, but that's not an actual measure of people's happiness and well-being. There's nothing prosperous about buying crap we don't need to end up as garbage polluting our planet.

On top of people being broke and worried about the planet, I think a lot of us are sick of sweat shop labor, sick of clutter, sick of single use plastic, sick of things falling apart/being horrible quality, sick of products being loaded with dangerous chemicals, and sick of the insane trend cycles. If the economy demands that we spend all our time detached from each other, working ourselves to death, just to buy more and more junk, then that’s a pretty dystopian economy. A wake up call for me was dealing with the amount of stuff that boomer age family members left behind after they passed away. You don’t get to take it with you, and in the end 90% of it is just junk that no one else wants.

Millennial here, this is what we call “adulting” or as our folks taught us “responsibility” and “budgeting”. Many of us have been doing it all our lives. Granted we didn’t grow up with internet shopping at our fingertips, but it’s a simple concept: Don’t buy things you don’t need just to fit in or keep up with the Jones or influencers. As our grandparents and great-grandparents called it: Common Sense. This is not a new concept.🙄 Overconsumption is a new concept. Folks used to reuse and reuse, fix up, and make the most of things all the time. I love how every couple of years some people discover reusing, recycling, canning, gardening, homemade, etc and act like it’s a “new” thing and they just came up with the notion. 🙄 Those of us who grew up wearing hand-me-downs and shopped at thrift stores before going home to harvest the garden with our parents, then can with our grandparents, are chuckling. Also, make-up for most people is not essential, so not sure how that figures into underconsumption. And another aspect of overconsumption is watching way to many social media videos of influencers telling you what to buy or not buy and following trends.

Haven't you been paying attention? There's been a trend for a long time now of not consuming so much crap. Baby boomers can't get rid of their stuff because younger generations don't want it. The environment is suffering from all the manufacturing: the use of resources, the factory pollution, the unused product. Child labor and poor working conditions from fast fashion. Look any of this stuff up. This is not just about being broke. Pay attention.

It is so much more sustainable, it is better for the environment and it is wonderful to see them take a shot at capitalism. Capitalism is toxic. Economic growth is not infinite and I hope the younger generation is serious about showing that we have to stop and sustain at some point. The Rich have enough now, they have taken enough and the youth don't want to keep filling their pockets even more.
