@@serenepeacefulrelaxingmusi3874 Markets like this do have spotters who keep an eye out for the Police and will alert everyone if a raid is coming. But I think this guy might've been drunk because he wasn't making much sense when talking either.
Instead of keeping your phone in backpack I used to keep it in front pocket. But just ensured that music/songs are on and you had your ear phone in place. So if incase music/song gets stop then *understand* that someone has stolen your mobile. Most of mumbaikar try/use this trick in local.
Karl is doing such a brilliant job. He is a traveller with a difference & a master of exposing crimes and injustice that's happening around the world. A real honest man, who wants the world to become a fairer place, devoid of corruption. Keep it up! ☺️
@@KarlRock Yes bro, your dedication to keeping tourists safe and informed are highly commendable 😊😊...Been following you since you opened this channel and you have always been an inspiration to me. God bless you! 😊💙
Been in India since last May for work. Stolen phones are not worth to buy especially iPhones because its not usable when it has an Apple account. Thanks for posting this, Karl.
Then it would be broken down for the use of the components inside as spare parts as Karl said. Never, set passwords or Pins which a lot of people would know. Those are the strongest security as well as 2-factor authentication on as many of your accounts as possible, plus a one-password wallet application with a master password which nobody else but yourself should know. That's what keeps these... You know whats, out of your personal data.
@@kalaichelvan im saying that buying stolen phones is a risk because it can track you down with the IMEI number and the phone number you inserted to the phone.
@@zoey8977I mean, no Indian would dare to do this yet a foreigner did.. That's appreciable. This is not some small robbery/crime, there's a big international lobbies with high rank stakeholders within and outside the system of different countries involved in this.
As much as I love Karl's videos, they've pretty much singlehandedly convinced me to never ever visit India... Too much to worry about and it's sad that such a great culture and history is ruined by rampant crime, scams, and more.
Good call. We’re still a long way from being a good place to visit. Too much poverty just forces people to steal, while the top 1% sit with 99% of the wealth
Completely understandable man. I myself as an indian have gotten scammed out of a huge sum of money and my sister also got robbed off of her iPhone. One must never let their guard down here in India.
I still remember when I bought one plus 6 on it’s launch date back in 2018 and just after 3 days it was pick pocketed at Hauz khas metro station. That was my first and only experience of getting pickpocketed. It was 10:30 at night and I had no idea what to do next. For an hour I just stood at the station clueless. The next day I tried filing an official police complaint at the police station and this was more hurtful for me than getting my phone stolen. The cops didn’t entertain my complaint and just said “Ye sab toh hota reheta hai. Iski kya complaint likhein.” But if a VIP’s phone get stolen, it’ll take 2 hours for the cops to find it and bringit back to the person. A common man just have to take it like a good little boy.
I am from Bhubaneswar,, Capital of ODISHA which is an Indian Eastern State... I too was surprised seeing such a market...😅 It seemed to be eerie 😐 Thank U for spreading awareness among the Tourists...
These are really helpful videos to indians too cause lately there are so many scams abt tech products not only in offline markets but also online markets is insane-
I had my pocket picked twice in my life. Once in North New Jersey and once in New York. In New Jersey, it was a man dressed up as an old lady. The police knew about him when I reported it. My wallet was recovered. The other time in NYC. It was more a bump and run. I was waiting at a corner, trying to cross the street. One guy bumped me from one direction, and the other bumped me from another direction. Both of them took off at full speed, going different ways. The good news is this was so long ago that I lost mainly travelers' checks. I was able to get back most of that money once I reported them stolen.
Had my phone stolen many years ago. It was security locked... Called the carrier immediately and had it turned into a $600 paper weight. No one would have been able to access it, I was told. The EIN was made unaccessible. Tracked it on Lookout and it was at an Indian Tobacco Shop, in the strip mall where I had ate dinner at. Of course they denied having it... Luckily, I had all my contacts and photos saved to Google, so they were recouped.
I’m sorry for you! I was traveling with my family in Paris and this lady almost pickpocketed me and I quickly swatted her hand and yelled “ROBBER” in French. She ran so far away but we had called the French police and I don’t know what happened to her after.
Buying a phone that you know was stolen which happens to still have information about the original owner somewhere on it would make a great documentary video where you try to bring it back to its owner.
Hey how it's going , your channel is my favorite one i especially like it when you explain everything so nicely. I wish you a lot of success with the channel and happy life.
In fact buy two cheap phones, so the first one can be tossed away while the other you keep (especially for emergency or immediate contacts kept at home.)
I had my work phone (iPhone) stolen in Mexico. Was a real pain... You have to be careful anywhere there is a tourist spot, that's where thieves target. Besides using a fanny pack/backpack to hide your phone, a pocket that has a zipper is even better. Before you travel, you could find a tailor to sew a pocket with a zipper. That's what I did.
Good idea. Unfortunately its a real problem. I had to stop a woman on a British railway station and tell her to take her phone out her back pocket. It was so easy to snatch and run, she was grateful.
@giacomoG555 The amount of times I've seen a girl/woman with half their phone hanging out the back pocket is crazy. It's usually a nice iPhone, too. I don't understand why they do it.
Karl, i can attest that this is how thieves do it in Europe as well. Ive had known some shady stores and people selling stolen phones prior to the smartphone era. What they did was they eirher didnt charge it or took out the battery. Sometimes they didnt even give a charger because they knew it would take time to get a charger and would get away at it. Btw love these exploration vids. I feel like i am with you on the streets of Mumbai or wherever.
I just lost my phone at Meijer. Someone turned it in. I went to get it 3 hours after it was lost. If it had been Walmart, I don't think I would have ever seen it again.
I stole some dudes phone once. And the funniest part was that it was totally by accident cause I picked it up thinking it was my phone. Anyhow long story but supposedly it ended up being returned to the owner.
Love ya Karl been following for years. So happy to see you and your beautiful wife on so many wonderful adventures, love all the content you do. Much love.
After watching your videos for some time I've decided India is one of the last places I'd ever want to visit. It seems extremely dangerous. So much so that you sell a book on how to stay safe. Low food standards, countless scams, and rape culture. This country seems unsafe and better off viewed through RU-vid videos like yours. Your videos are great and I'll continue to watch them but I can't fathom the concept that you believe everyone should visit India.
While I can appreciate people trying to recycle things and keep things out of landfills I don't like at all people selling stolen phones, giving an easy way for criminals and pickpockets from keep doing what they are doing. It also is a shame because there are plenty of people who don't know any better and would be fooled into buying a phone they can't even use, doesn't work, is blocked, and so on. At same time I hate companies who try to stop you from selling or trade things you purchased, like things you buy these days aren't really yours and they only want you to sell it back to them at basically no value and pay full price for a new phone. I miss the days when we could buy games or other electronics and we fully owned them and could do anything we wanted with them.
India does not allow apple phones to be locked by foreign companies for security reasons, so you have to use the Indian government app. If an apple phone is stolen outside India, it can be shipped to India for resale. It does not work the other way. An apple phone stolen in India can be locked outside India and locked by the government in India. It's a pain to do as you have to file an fir at the police station in person to lock a phone
Most of these phones are second hand phones not stolen phones. But off course some phones could also be stolen phones....and this not a stolen phones market but a fake and second hand phones market....karl you are trying to portray it differently just for the views
I lived there for years and didn't not know about this. I knew shady things happen after hours but stolen phones on sale right outside Dadar station? Damn.
i live in india for so many years and yet i didn't know where these phones go after they have been stolen, in december 2019 on christmas a kid stole our 2 phones and because of google i was able to see that for the last time my phone was turned on in kolkata then i wiped it remotely..... there have been news of stealing rackets that use kids and you won't actually suspect a kid. we only found out how our phones were stolen because of CCTV otherwise child was so slick that you wouldn't notice at all
Selling 'stolen' items is also a common sales strategy in markets that deal in grey market goods. It's a similar concept to 'garage sale' which creates an illusion that everything will be dirt cheap. Nice tour bro albeit the bored as f sales guys😄
Please Karl reupload the nintendo mod video and probably change the title. Nintendo is very strict as a company. Really loved that video. Please make another one please
Good job Karl! Another reason why you see only old phones is when a stolen/lost phone is reported to the police, they put the IMEI on watch list and monitor whenever one of these is turned on and used by a cellular network.. So these criminals, they put these phones/laptops in storage for many years till they become obsolete.. With hundreds of phones getting stolen in India every single day, the police cant maintain the list and eventually remove the older records from the watchlist...
Brother how about an fan meetup at the famous shivaji park in mahim?? Its just 2 stations ahead!!! Also we love you vlogs that you make in curiosity and honesty
great video, and very interesting..!! in barcelona's railway stations they have signs saying "beware of pick pockets.."- and your instinct is to check your pockets (by touching them) to make sure your valuable items are still there... and the pickpockets who hang around now know exactly what pockets to pinpoint.. i was in naples and in the back lanes where guys om mopeds asking if i wanted to buy a mobile phone...one assumes they just stole in minutes earlier..
“YOU DIDNT PICKPOCKET ANYBODY” also did you know most pickpockets are women and kids but kids are more common because of their unsuspected victims and the fact is if they were caught they couldn’t be sent to jail. Also kids are faster than women as many pickpockets wear heels to trick men into thinking they were a prostitute
Good video ! It's always interesting seeing the underground black markets. I wouldn't shop there though, firstly I don't want to encourage theft, secondly I don't trust the vendors. What's the point of those phones that aren't charged ?! Who would buy that ?
In Brazil there are markets like these too but I think the difference is that its not only pickpocketed phones, some of the owners were killed during the robbery. Phones stained by blood. Brazilian justice is the worst.
