Undercurrent is a creative heritage project that aims to uncover and share historical narratives of activism and music sub-cultures connected to the River Lea.
From neolithic beginnings to Blockers’ Seaside, punk gigs to rave collectives, the River Lea has been a constant source of inspiration for Luton and beyond. The journey of Undercurrent starts in Luton, exploring the River Lea’s history, and associated music sub-cultures such as rave, punk and sound systems.
Undercurrent honours Luton’s heritage of activism and music sub-cultures and connects working-class stories along the River Lea - from its source in Leagrave, journeying through Hertfordshire and Enfield, past the Olympic Park in Newham to where it meets the River Thames at Trinity Buoy Wharf.
Undercurrent is a Revoluton Arts project, in partnership with Marsh Farm Outreach and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
