Hello everybody.
I'm here with a new video. In this video I made an underground shelter. First, I dug the soil to get enough depth and length. Then I covered it with trees. I covered the trees with dry grass. Then I covered it with soil. I built a fireplace inside my shelter. I both warmed and cooked my meals there. It was an enjoyable camp for me. I hope you like it too. Enjoy watching.

40 years ago, while hunting on the edges of the Australian outback, we came across an almost identical in-ground hut. We called them shepherd's huts, a temporary home until the homesteader / squatter, built a more permanent structure. It kept the scorching sun off you, and the dirt fireplace was ideal for cooking with off-ground dugout shelves for beds. The wooden / dirt canopy was exact to your build and was cozy, warm and a partial safe area from bush fires. Excellent video mate.

Hello. You told me so beautifully about the shelter you encountered 40 years ago that I am very happy. Thank you very much for taking the time to write your valuable comment. I offer my love and respect.

It may even seem ironic to dig a hole in the ground in a survival situation. It may have the appearance of a tomb, but in these weather conditions it is the best alternative to stay alive! I really enjoyed your video!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
@lifeinnatureandbushcraft5540
I'm glad you liked the video. Thank you. There was an underground bunker I made before. It didn't have a fireplace and I really made it like a tomb and wrote that in the recipe. But I didn't think it looked like a tomb until you told me about this shelter. (It's really ironic to stay in a tomb-like bunker for survival. It's a different perspective. Thanks)

Top class. I think that's the most homely shelter I've seen anyone make in the wilderness. Our ancestors must have felt so cosy in their shelters sometimes.

I'm a former log cabin builder from Northern Minnesota (pencil pusher now, I'm 60). Back in the day we used axes and chainsaws, there was usually no power to the site until the building was complete. I like the concept for a dugout survival shelter in the right environment, but up north we have bedrock (glaciers scraped off the topsoil) and even in early winter, frozen ground. Go too deep in the woods and you'll have a root network that will have you sawing all day. Right place and season, though, and I think this would work and be an effective shelter. A good warm camp for a few days, but may not be worth it if you're on the move in a climate warm enough to dig. Still a cool video though, and not a bad idea for staying under rifle fire in the deer opener or otherwise.
@lifeinnatureandbushcraft5540
Thank you very much for sharing valuable information about yourself. It's really cold where you live. Staying in such shelters can be difficult. It still works there when the door is solid and the floor is insulated. It's not too cold where I live and the black winter hasn't come yet. So I woke up without freezing. Also the fireplace was working very well.

We built “cave” club houses in West Texas as kids. Dig a ditch, dig a big club room for 4 or 6 kids, and cover with scrap wood, then tin sheets and dirt on top. Problem with our caves and these ground shelters you see, is rain that comes in the entrance. We would dig the entrance with a 6 or 8 lip of dirt just past the entrance to stop water from entering the path to the club room. Further advancement was to make a lip of dirt around the entrance and make a top of tin with 2x4 to block out the rain. We were hot stuff in our caves. 😂

We call these dugouts in Australia ,my brother and I made one as kids, it's a lot of work, I remember thinking that as a 10 year old ,but if you want to keep a low profile it's definitely the way to do it, we used to hide there when our father was looking for me or my brother when we'd been naughty ,worked for awhile,it's important to have some way for small animals particularly snakes to be able to get out, and raise the sides two or three inchs to stop it becoming a mini lake, we used logs and old roofing iron for the roof the logs worked well as they gave us a 360° gap so we could see around , the height we dug too was the height where we could bend over but still walk around you could go deeper if you are more enthusiastic about digging,

There are some possibilities for short-term survival in such constructs, but many of this type of video feature a brown, clayey soil, workable stuff but very different from the black, friable soil in this region. The shelter's roof in this video would also be useless in a rain or even a light snow. With some kind of impermeable cover and door and soil that doesn't crumble this shelter could make a fun hideout or getaway spot for camping, reflecting, and observing nature.
@lifeinnatureandbushcraft5540
This is temporary and enough for me. The region is not a very rainy place. It can be improved a little more for rainy regions.

Interesting project but I don't see it as practica/fully thought out in an emergency situation. You have a shovel, mattock, lighter, cutting board, and grocery store veggies. Why not a tarp or three, or even a cheap roll of dropcloth plastic? Plastic or tarps over the roofing cover before applying brush/dirt would be the ideal waterproofing for the interior as well as a vapor barrier for heat retention. If building it as a long-term structure (weeks to months of use), it'd be best to invest the time and effort into making a rudimentary kiln to bake mudbrick shingles for protection from the elements.

Большое спасибо. Да, зимой было бы трудно копать.

Probably not much rain there that would flood really quick so you have to do it on the top of the hill maybe? I can also dig a tunnel to let the water out?😮❤😅
@lifeinnatureandbushcraft5540
The region is not a place that gets a lot of rain. As you said, a tunnel can also be dug for the flow of water. Thanks.
