In this video, the Manti Homestead explains why they felt urgency to build their underground greenhouse, which is a passive solar walipini. Nate welcomes, his new subscribers interested in the remodel of his 1871 rock home and articulates a little further the overall message of the Manti Homestead to create more self-sufficient lifestyle (prepping) despite the busyness of day-to-day life.
With all that is going on in the world right now, the time to get motivated to make preparations has never been greater! Remember to like and subscribe.

President Kimball said the time to learn to do stuff is BEFORE the emergency comes. We recently came across a channel you might like. I’ll text you the link. I think it’s funny when people feel the need to tell someone why they’re unfollowing - as if they think you need to conform your mission and message to meet their desires. I’m glad you’ll continue on with your message. I’ve been thinking a lot about the blessings of paying tithing and of keeping the word of wisdom. It’s good to see some of those promises being fulfilled for you guys.

Just found your channel today and I gotta say I love your random rabbit trails in between your conviction. "We are going through the book of Revelation and... Oh look at these cherry tomatoes". I have a very similar brain so its fun to see it played out in someone else. Haha. And I agree we should all be prepping at least a little. Even if for those who think the worst that will happen is a few days long power outage that is still longer than people realize when you have no water, no stored food, and no heat/cooling options! Thanks for sharing! Your greenhouse is my dream!

Dragon fruit can actually fruit alot sooner than 3 years if you cut the grow tops off as well as give it alot of direct sunlight which can cause it to stress and trigger it to produce fruit. Alot of trees and plants are triggered by stress to fruit because it makes them think they are in trouble and therefore need to fruit to pass their Gene's on before dying. If you let it, Dragonfruit will just grow grow grow for years without fruiting, but if you cut the growing tips it will help it flower and fruit much sooner, even in as little as 1 year.

We introduced the finches to help with aphids, and frogs to help with the slugs! We have a specific design for the winter and summer to increase as much ventilation as possible, and so so far I would say it is very healthy because of that airflow. Thanks for watching!

@@mantihomestead thanks for the reply. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on your progress. I would like to do something similar, although I'm not sure if I'll build one larger one like yours or two smaller ones. I have an idea in my head to make one dedicated (mainly) to herbs and aromatics but will have to weigh up the practical aspects of such ideas. One larger one may be the way to go. Do you have info on inside temps and humidity and outside temps in December? In other words how warm can you keep it in the depths of winter. Just thought I'd add, I think your prepping idea is a good one and one that will (excuse the pun) bear fruit. I think the U.S is heading for very hard times with BRICS around the corner and both political parties being insanely corrupt. The latter being a common problem around the world. Western European countries like Germany are in serious jeopardy as well, not to mention idiot nations like Australia. We could be on the cusp of WW3 and when not, it still won't spare us from the economic crash that seems inevitable. Soooo long waffle but, we are going to need to be more self sufficient, live a simpler life, move away from rampant consumerism and try and move back to small community. I'll trundle off now. Take care.

Thanks! Check out “construction video 2” at the end of the video I do a smoke bomb test to show how it works. But I don’t have too much info on what I could or couldn’t change. I was wondering how you pollinate your tomatoes? I have one in my kitchen window,but I’m not sure how to go about pollinating it. Someone said they are self pollinating. I have also seen people use a small paint brush. I figure you would be a good person to ask.
@mantihomestead
@mantihomestead 7 месяцев назад
Yes, that would be an awesome video to do.! My wife is actually a little bit more knowledgeable than I am on it. With tomatoes, though you can almost simply just shake it, and the pollen will fall upon itself. I don’t think you would need to use a Brush.

@mantihomestead
@mantihomestead 2 месяца назад
Yeah, the cool thing about this design is during the summer. The water tanks are in the shade, during the winter they are in full sunlight. So it works in my favor in each scenario. During the summer, you definitely don’t want any more of the thermal mass heating up, during the winter you’re desperate for it :-) so it works out really good using the walipini angle technology.

@mantihomestead
@mantihomestead 7 месяцев назад
I’m glad you like it! I don’t really have a good breakdown of the cost I need to do that. We chose to have our Grow beds made out of concrete which you could do for a lot cheaper if you wanted. Also, the back wall was concrete, and then we had to cover with metal, if I had more space I could birm up some dirt and save some money there too.

I have a property in the mountains east of Cedar City around 7,400’ in elevation. Because of the topography and pine tree cover, the most sun I’d get during the winter solstice is about 3.5-4 hours of direct sunlight but just about all day during the summer. Do you suppose an off grid greenhouse like this is feasible under those conditions? Our temperatures are similar to yours, but we get a bit more snow on average.
@mantihomestead
@mantihomestead 8 месяцев назад
We used to live in Cedar city and that’s where all of our family is at still :-) the snow won’t be an issue at all. I do worry a little bit about the light. You really need that son to heat up the water barrels and the cement. What is blocking the sun? Is it by a mountain or is the house blocking it?
@brianbarsness8110
@brianbarsness8110 7 месяцев назад
@@mantihomestead thanks for the info! The mountainous terrain and some tall pine trees block the sun primarily in the winter. It’s in a relatively narrow north-south running saddle.

So are you having to pollinate your plants? If so how are you doing it.
@mantihomestead
@mantihomestead 8 месяцев назад
Hello we have Mason bees in the greenhouse that do most of that for us. They live year-round. They can pollinate as good as a honeybee, but they are not known to sting humans. But if we do want to hand pollinate, we just grab a brush, and simply do it. Maybe I’ll do a video on that. But we really have not pollinated by hand hardly anything.

@mantihomestead
@mantihomestead Месяц назад
Yes, I have two sets of Pipes. If you look at Construction video number two it gives you a pretty good rundown of what we did. One set brings air from outside and goes 8 feet under the ground coming into the greenhouse. Basically to warm up outside air during the winter. It relies on natural convection through the upper windows and vents so that hot air naturally rises and creates a vacuum, sucking the air through those tubes.
