Underhand Grafting - Paracord Wrap Using Grafting - Decorative Covering Knot" Grafting - A covering technique which offers a wide scope for decorative variations, yet which is very simple in principle. Grafting can also be mixed or alternated with other covering methods, particularly with Cross Pointing and Crown Sennit" Stuart E Grainger.
Also known as Spanish Hitching.

Nice tutorial! Just wanted to mention that grafting will not hide any irregularities in what you are covering. On the contrary, it will exacerbate any unevenness. If you are covering a rope, make sure it is wormed and parcelled very carefully. Don't bother trying to graft over a splice. If you are grafting over some puddening, remove any seizings holding your puddening in place as you go.
Basically Grafting is interweaving a Warp running continuously around the section being covered, with wefts which run along the length of the section.
I calculated that for every inch of covering I used 2.66 inches of cordage. The cordage itself was 3mm in dia.

No worries bro. If I had my copy of Ashley's handy I'd post the pertinent page number. What's next? Overhand grafting? Keep the excellent videos coming! Here it is: ABoK #3554, pg 563. Also of note, the technique presented in #3557 is very handsome when applied to a cylindrical object.

Just out of curiosity, do you know if there is a proper PDF version of ABoK. I want one where I can actually search for a keyword, or highlight a word, sentence etc and copy it? I have found one version, but that is only like a scanned copy of the book. I do have a proper copy of ABoK, but sometimes want a PDF version for quick access.

Keep going. I like the banter and love the content. I got a good laugh when you said a turkshead hides a tying sin.

@KnottingKnots 7 лет назад
When I see a Turks Head now, all I can think about is what are you hiding. Are you a knotter?
@MrBlack751
@MrBlack751 7 лет назад
Apologies for the late response. But yes, I attempt to be a knotter but am no means any sort of expert. I just learned to tie a turkshead without help of video instruction. I found that there is a great bit more to knot tying than the basic paracord bracelet and I enjoy it immensely. Thanks for the reply.

I just love it when people get hooked on knotting! Keep it up, show me your work when you have some done?

It seems like a good way to start or finish this knot would be with a Matthew Walker knot. It can be wrapped around a core & it can be dressed out so that the cords end up evenly spaced around the core.

Interesting idea.................. I personally cover all sins with the Turks Head, perhaps as you say, the MW, I am now thinking a single strand MW may be quicker??
@equesdeventusoccasus
@equesdeventusoccasus Год назад
@@KnottingKnots a single strand MW should definitely work, however, I have worked with 6 & 8 strand MW's around a core and with a bit of finagling, arranged the cords evenly around the core at the end. I usually use it as a start when decoratively covering a pen. It should work with a larger MW on a larger core.

In today knotting terminologiue, it would be better you would say you make underhand hitches, no loops. Loops was the historical terminologie. So there are differences between bight, loop, turn and hitches (half hitches) Great tutorial, thank you.

Well done. I always look forward to watching your videos. They are a tremendous help in trying to figure out some of the diagrams pictured in the Ashley Book of Knots. Three cheers for Mr. Johnny Debt!

I hate pictures in books, especially drawn ones! By drawing them they can make all work look excellent. Also when drawing, there are no fingers in the way of your line of sight, compared to actually doing it. Glad that you popped over and left me a comment. Do you have some work on-line to view?

Hey, that is me, I have one ditty bag that is now in about its fourth year in the making! Also now where I am doing these videos, there is a whole load of stuff that just needs a couple of touches to finish them. Just won't happen. To be honest Ashley's for a beginner is not so good, personally, I recommend Des Pawson's book on Knotting Projects: amzn.to/2scPYOa

This one is just so quick and simple. The only thing I really found was, you have to concentrate to ensure the pattern remains a constant!

Nice job on the video! I've done this a few times on various projects; most recently a bellrope I sold that was a slightly different version of this. It's extremely time consuming, but worth the effect. -Jason AKA Legacy Knotworks

I really do like your work, as you have a lot of stuff done with natural cordage. I am a great fan of using natural cordage, as it gives the work a lovely olde worlde look. Paracord is good for its colour range, but I don't think it stands the test of time like natural cordage. I do a fair bit with used rope, I try to purchase stuff that has a bit of history to it. If I make something and pass it on, I add a label telling the history of the rope.
@WisdomJunkie1

Johnny Debt Thank you for the kind words. I agree, natural cordage is better to work with, but I also am going for am old world look..traditional. Trying to keep the legacy of the craft alive. your videos are fantastic and your narration is top notch. Keep up the great work, but don't burn out. I had a channel a few years ago myself, but it became too much work. I admire those like yourself that can keep producing quality content.

Just know this, every time I use Paracord I am cringing a bit. I do hope to convert all those people that make Paracord Bracelets, over to using natural cordage!

I gave it a like because I like the tutorial. I would rather cover a handle with a Turks head knot! I don't think I would use this hitching because it seems so tedious. Thank you for sharing Johnny Debt! Good tutorial!

Sometimes you will want to produce something a little different, so grafting is one way of achieving this. We will always have our favourite ones to fall back on, but it is also good to know that there is something different out there. Once again good of you to pop in and leave a comment, very much appreciated.

1 cord eg; white and one red. white is the conductor/leader thread and red is knotted. this used to be done on the railing of a fishing boat to have more grip when it rained or stormed

04:01 I think, this is "Overhand grafting", not Underhand grafting. Because the turn you made has an right-handed helix (clockwise). This indicates that is overhand. Would the turn be counter-clockwise, this would be underhand.

Is it crucial to use an odd number of strands in this type of grafting? By the way, to me there's no need to improve your tutorials. It is always a pleasure to watch them because of your super clear, positive and frequently funny way you presenting them. So, thanks for sharing. 🤝
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 4 года назад
If I recall, this type of grafting is not reliant on odd or even, this does matter when you are dealing with under over methods. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

I really like this one. Two things I think you could have done. First, discuss why your white cord is a thinner cordage. Second, you could have used more than one color on your working strands to from a pattern that way. Those aside, great informational video.
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 7 лет назад
Yes, you are correct. However, your thoughts are excellent about this, you just need to have a go yourself with your ideas. You could also try to do the same, but without any overhand on the red cord. There are a few different styles that you could experiment with. Please do show me when you have completed any?
@HrafnNordhri
@HrafnNordhri 7 лет назад
Johnny Debt been a bit since I've done this and Spanish hitching. Either way, thanks for the vid. No one discusses why they use two different sizes of cordage. I did you allow the grafting to lay closer together and be less bulky.
@TomTholan
@TomTholan 6 месяцев назад
Similar would be "Overhand grafting". The difference is only instead of an underhand hitch, you make an overhande hitch.

I would greatly appreciate your showing us how to . . . . . . "Add The Turks Head Knot" . . . . . . . . to the Grafting Wrap . . . . . . . to complete the instruction. I have never seen anyone actually add a decorative knot such as a Turks Head. Thanks, Richard USA

I don’t like the white showing up what should I do to cover it up?
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 6 лет назад
In this particular case you can not hide the white cord. But what you could do is to choose other colour cords that either match or suit your particular taste. Or alternatively you could do continuous crowning or needle hitching?
@mariadoms6100

I make this with 2cords. It’s easyr. I do this with one cord per example white that’s a leadercord and the red one you roll a Verry long end to a bol and you knot the same knot. I wont the send you a photo
