Wes, great demo on installing those drawer glides. I’d like to see how you installed & figured out how to put the glides in & the thought behind placement.

If Blum /Salice or any other company designed a btm. mount system to retrofit existing side mount drawers , I think theyd sell a lot. (1” difference) nice video!

Wes, you make it look so easy. I converted two door cabinets I had to drawer cabinets two weeks ago, so I just made my first drawers with bottom mount drawer rails. Wish I had seen your video first, but intuitively I ended up doing it pretty much the same way you demonstrated it, except I used a hand router for the grooves and I glued the drawers together (no nails). All turned out fairly good, but I have yet to decide on drawer fronts. I made one mistake, though… I routered the grooves slightly deeper than they needed to be (for a little wiggle room). This would have not been a problem, EXCEPT when I glued and clamped the drawers together I also clamped the centers of the drawers, which of course had no ‘stop’ in form of the front and back pieces between the sides, causing a minor bow on one of the drawers. Later, I couldn’t figure out at first why one of drawers didn’t easily slide onto the rails like the others, until I looked from below and saw the slight bow on one side. Needless to say, the drawer slides I ordered in bulk also had no instructions or drawings with dimensions included, which didn’t help. Next drawers should be easier. If there will be a ‘next’… 😬

Wes bringing back fond memories of my mid 80’s college days working in a cabinet shop lol. We had a bench belt sander we would sand the cut top edges tilting them up/down ever so slightly to round over. (Fastened with staples too) Probably did 1000’s of ‘em. Back in the days of oak raised panels and sometimes arched panels, sure you remember those days well. Question- what make model hardware are those? Blum?

Great video as always Wes but who's brand of slides are you using? Around here we use mostly blum 563's and they require 1/2 inch material on the drawer sides and you deduct 5/8" from the opening to get your drawer width! 3/8 would be a deal breaker. Just wondering because I have never encountered 3/8
@WoodworkingWithWes

I typically use Blum but for this demonstration it was not available so I used an off brand. Thanks, Wes

Nice video...........Question for you - I may have missed it, but what thickness dimensions are you using on your plywood stock? 1/2 inch for the drawer sides and 1/4 inch for the drawer bottom?
@WoodworkingWithWes
@WoodworkingWithWes Год назад
I use 5/8" for the drawer side and 1/4"for the bottom. Thanks for watching, Wes

off subject if you were installing side mount slides can you deduct an extra 1/32 or 1/16 off the total width. Just to be safe so that the box will not be tight. would the slides still operate properly.
@WoodworkingWithWes
@WoodworkingWithWes Год назад
1/32 " will still allow for proper function. Thanks for watching, Wes

Wes, I have a small one man cabinet shop and have tried to use dovetail drawers as a selling point for my work. Question is, do you find dovetails much of an issue? Do people really care or even know the difference?
@adamchesis7443
@adamchesis7443 Год назад
it all depends on the quality of work you want to do, I only use domestic ply and solid maple dovetail drawer boxes. I have found that people do know the difference. and therefore will pay more for it
@jamespotter4878
@jamespotter4878 Год назад
@@adamchesis7443 what do you mean by domestic ply? Is there something as good as baltic birch that is domestic?
@adamchesis7443
@adamchesis7443 Год назад
@@jamespotter4878 I don't use baltic birch, I use domestic 2UV ply for all my cases, its 7 ply the asian stuff has something like 13 ply but its garbage it sometimes delaminates, warps like crazy and I don't like it, a lot of people use it because it's cheap, I don't use cheap materials, I figured out a long time ago a little more money upfront saves you money in the end

I noticed this creator used nails instead of dovetails or pocket holes, is that for ease of demonstration or is this a common practice? Curios since I’m learning and will attempt my own soon. Thanks!

Can you show how to make a drawer with out table saw and nail gun? Would be great

I'm enjoying your video, but at 2 minutes in, have to comment on cutting the slots for the drawer bottom, pressing down the piece with your hand over the saw blade.. My older brother came to my shop one afternoon, and unbeknownst to me at the moment, was doing the exact same type of thing. I heard him start yelling and looked over to see him clutching his hand. The piece had very unexpectedly kicked back and his fingers went right into the blade. I drove him to the local ER, they transported him to Duke for surgery. Fortunately, they got the dangling pieces of sausages reattached, but he can rule out playing piano for the rest of his life. I would very strongly discourage anyone from putting their hand over the blade when making a blind cut like that.

Yeah, no kidding. He may have done it most of his life and have all of his digits. But there is no way I'm taking that chance; specifically because of instances like your brother. Not just no, but hell no.

I also felt worried when he was using the nail gun and pointing it towards himself 3:09. I know Wes has better skill than most, but I was a bit nervous.

as you slide in the bottom it looks like you cut a rabbet on it.

Hi...yes, there is a rabbet cut on the sides and the front of the drawer box to receive the 1/4" bottom. Thanks, Wes
