I had the brilliant idea to switch out our undermount sink to a top mount vessel sink. The project did not go as planned.

To save a lot of work, the under counter sink did not have to be removed. Just set the vessel sink as was done in the video and run the drain from the vessel sink into the existing drain of the under counter sink.
@fromhousetohomestead
@fromhousetohomestead 6 месяцев назад
Hi! We tried to do that but the drain hole is too small for any of the plumbing to fit through. Believe me, breaking out the old sink was a last ditch solution after we tried everything else.

☺️ I don't know about "pros". It's all about finding a way to get something done. We can't show everything on video, we tried everything to get that undermount sink off without breaking it. Breaking it was the last resort in order to move the project forward.

Are the sinks still holding up well? I wasn’t sure if the weight of the vessel sink would affect the countertop if there’s a large hole underneath it. Would love to do this!

Hi! Sorry for the delayed response, after doing the 1st sink we discovered it wasn't going to work the way we wanted so we took the vessel sink out and put an undermount sink back in.

@@fromhousetohomesteadhi! Wondering what exactly didn’t work? Im looking to do this but wondering if it was due to the hole underneath or if it was for another reason? Thanks!
@fromhousetohomestead

Hi! The only part that didn't work was that the vanities are too tall so the vessel sink sat too high and when I (KC) would use it, water would run down from my hands to my elbows and drip water on the floor! Normally when you wash your hands or do whatever in the sink, your hands/forearms are positioned down towards the sink. The vessel sink was so high that my hands were angled up causing water to run down my arms. This happened every single time I used it because I wasn't tall enough for my arms to clear the sink. If you're tall it would probably work just fine. Travis didn't have any problems using the sink. There were no issues with structure or stability or strength. There was plenty of countertop to support the vessel sink. Typically you're not putting heavy things in a bathroom sink like you do in a kitchen sink so support isn't much of an issue. I hope this answers your questions!

Hi! Hopefully I'm understanding your question correctly. We had taken the clips from the underside off already and once the bowl was broken it was easy to peel the chunks with the caulking on it off the countertop. Hopefully that answers your question?

Wondering why you didn’t switch to a drop in sink ? I have an undercount sink that was installed God knows when ( before I moved in 20 years ago) and it’s enamel is now rusting and the plumb8ngs need replaced and I’m thinking about converting to drop-in mount sink for earlier installation.
@fromhousetohomestead
@fromhousetohomestead 11 месяцев назад
We didn't try a drop in because we don't have the things we needed to cut the marble. I really wanted a rectangular shaped sink, but because we didn't want to cut the marble countertop then it had to be undermount or vessel.

Did you silicon or plumbers putty around drain before installing it on the sink?
@fromhousetohomestead
@fromhousetohomestead Год назад
Hi! Thanks for your question! We did not use either. With this particular faucet set the instructions said "no silicone or plumbers putty required". The rubber gasket that comes with the drain seems to be sufficient all on it's own. We are also careful not to over-tighten the nut underneath so it doesn't pinch the gasket making it not sit flush and snug against the sink bowl. Your best bet is to read the instructions that come with the faucet/drain and follow the manufacturers instructions/recommendations.

Shoulda used shims to separate the basin from the counter.

We tried that, the edges rolled on the composite shim and the wood ones splintered.

Good morning, we got the sink from Amazon. There are several different sizes and heights to choose from. I chose a size that would cover the existing hole in the countertop but not take up too much of the counter space, I also thought the taller sink would keep less water from splashing out. I actually shopped around to several different retail sites including Home Depot and Lowes, looking for the "right" sink. Price was also a factor, there were sinks I liked a lot but I wasn't willing to spend the money they were asking for them. We just did the one sink because I wanted to try the vessel sink for a few days before committing to doing the other one and I'm glad I did. It turns out that I did not like using the vessel sink at all and we ended up taking it out and putting an undermount sink back in. We did a video of that project. Here is the link for that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5xfQxH6tm20.html Several factors led me to the decision to go back to the undermount sink. One: the sink I chose was too tall. 5.5 inches was way too high. Our bathroom vanities are normal height and the vessel sink made them even taller. I am average height of 5'6" and wasn't able to use the sink without water running down my arms and dripping onto the floor. Travis is over 6 feet, and he didn't have any problems. Two: the vessel sink did not stop water from splashing all over the countertop like I hoped it would. Three: I didn't like how tall the faucet was (and had to be) to reach over the sink. I am absolutely not trying to discourage you from doing this project, I'm only mentioning the things I discovered after we installed it so if you have a similar starting point you can learn from our mistakes. We didn't take any extra pictures of the project after it was finished, but you can get an idea of what it looked like if you watch the beginning of the video where we swapped back to the undermount sink. It really did look beautiful and I am really bummed it didn't work out for our set up. I hope your project works out just how you want it to!
