What was once a quiet haven for small communities of hippies and free-spirited creatives, Waiheke Island has grown rapidly in mainstream popularity over the years, and times have changed.
Now dubbed ‘The Island of Wine,’ Waiheke is dominated by its countless vineyards and tourism attractions, and one million visitors flock there every summer to experience the high life.
But how has this endless pursuit of luxury impacted the island?
Josh and Mearle are here to investigate!
Here's the link to watch on FB (there will be a youtube video too if you get stuck):

The island’s been changing and developing over the last 40 years. 30 years ago locals would express their displeasure at summer tourism. The redevelopment and gentrification has certainly improved Waiheke. It’s more vibrant. People are happier. There are more choices and opportunities. It’s also a lot safer. 30+ years ago Waiheke would attract sickness beneficiaries, criminals, drug addicts, unemployed, fugitives, outcasts of all kinds. Of course there were a few artists, musicians, new agers, poets, but there was always a dark cloud over Waiheke. It was basically cheaper and slower than the mainland (Auckland). Prosperity over stagnation any day 😊

I found this really sad to watch, the marina is just awful and I hope it is stopped. Really feel for Roger, 4 years in a car, that is tough. I’m saddened the island is changing and it’s not for the better. Tim should have given some credit to the society that preceded him, the volunteers did so much work. Great little doco guys, nice to watch something about the island that is not just a promo for tourists, made me miss my home for sure!

A fantastic documentary, wishing you all the best with your futures of film making and journalism. Amazing and heartbreaking to see the plight of this community shared in such a real and visceral manner. Can’t wait to see what other content you may produce in the future.

Woah I thought Waiheke was just about high brow wineries, parties & snobs. A captivating introduction to Waiheke, the history on a more deep and meaningful level. The iwi/protestors are all over the world fighting for lands, mother earth, nature while the corporates see $$ these kaitiaki are protecting our most precious resources for life.

Loving this, tho will have to watch other half later. My parents moved here from UK in the early 60's. Mums cousin Jerry ran the taxi business I think. My grandparents sold waiheke & moved to milford auckland, when their 3 daughters & partners joined them, due to more job opportunities there. I loved holidaying there. The last time I went was 26 years ago, when my partner was building a deck on his brothers dad Ernie's little old family Bach in surfdale. I kitefished off the beach with my 1st two babies. So beautiful, so much fun. My friend Simon lived there for years too, I always meant to go back, I must take my grandkids

This is absolutely brilliant, I’m so glad you showed the many sides of Rodger. He is a legend and absolutely hilarious. I’ve lived here for 20 years and the changes I’ve seen are not all positive. I myself have been priced our of the rental market here so have to move off the island. Thanks for the awesome work guys 😊

Tena korua. This was awesome. Thanks for making this. My brother and his miss have a huge house on the beach in Waihaeke. They couldn't give a fuk about people without $$. Haven't talked to the guy in years. If he watched this doco he would hate it 🤣🤦...can't stop progress..but better if progress is done consciously...remeber we all come from the dirt and that's where we enviatably return.

Fantastic little docco! I just wished you managed to squeeze in a little on the environmental impact of the marina, particularly on the breeding habitat of the kororā (little penguin), because it's not only the human locals that are suffering for this development. Native Bird Rescue on Waiheke could have given you a good insight. I do appreciate how difficult it is to cram so much diverse content in a short docco though and I did really enjoy it. ❤️👏

This was awesome. Insightful story, conflict, emotive, sound and video production bang on! How big’s your team? Never seen you guys before but subscribed & looking forward to more. Hit me up if you make it to Marlborough. There’s conflict with the aquaculture industry and locals. I work in aquaculture and we do as much as we can to mitigate things, huge amounts of money and genuine effort spent to do right, but it’s still not perfect. If you want another co host I’m down as fuck 😂

I've been coming here 40 years, its changed very little compared to the rest of NZ, and even less compared to the rest of the world. Waiheke is a victim of it's own success in that more people want to come here, therefore housing prices have increased and low wage workers, which Waiheke needs, have been priced out of the rental market, a problem common to 'tourist islands'. Someone entrepreneurial needs to address the demand for low cost worker housing, possibly some sort of dorm for seasonal workers or cohab space.

30:11 it's shit living in a car. Especially on wealthy semi retired before retirement aged land...it's rough as fuck watching year after year a new millionaire arrive to our island, north south and the small islands that surround us become our next new landlord ...while we live in vehicles . I live in my van, L300 Mitzi part time , the other time is in a powerless, unheated,no amenities hut. Yet here we are, living on a vineyard/hops nation...Apples for cider...it's all here. Booze and hori brews. ✌️

The wine yards and their toxic sprays have driven many from Waiheke. Thus the wonderful alternative artistic community has turned into a boozed up venue attracting alcoholics. One bottle per day every day is classified as alcoholic.. three bottles? These types have devalued this beautiful island.
