You must be "The Pinnacle of bricklayer" in Britain, not only because you are doin' an excellent job, but your openness, sharing and the way you are as a human. You and Drew (well done Drew, the way you got your bike back was epic) seem to be good M8s and a p'fect team. Crack on and bring us more of your videos with content like this
Drew is a wholesome guy! .. seems like a really good lad. .. you can tell he felt shy in wanting to tell us how rightfully angry he was in grabbing hold of the bike thief. Respect and im glad you got your bike back in the end. As always izzy, great video so far ‘ I paused to comment after Drew’s mishap ‘ .. since I’ve watched your channel it’s been top work throughout. Any client would be happy to have you doing their job.
Drew is a mint lad! Everyone loves him, you guys, the clients and us😂 he did what needed to be done and luckily got his bike back 🎉🎉 new video out brother
@@IzzytheBrickyhere in western Massachusetts USA I charge between $1600-$2000 for labor depending on what the job is. And I have more work than I can handle. That is just myself and my helper. Although we do a lot of chimney rebuilds and not much in the way of extensions because the USA doesn’t really support the brick industry. Everything is framed and has no character these days. When I first started out I was charging $1000 a day labor plus materials and that was 12 years ago as a starting co tractor still wet between the ears. Boost your cost mate! Although I will say that being a brickie in America demands more money because there is less of us and the trade is dying a bit so to find a good one costs a premium.
Comparing London to the north then think about Ulez/conjestion/parking/fuel etc etc. We stopped working in London as it just wasn't worth the hassle and costs. Ulez/Conjestion/Park/Fuel alone can set you back now 500 quid alone a week, that's 2K a month. Rents are miles higher here compared to the north also.
Excellent work and very genuine review of pricing. I work in large scale construction (power stations) and every site needs somebody with your personality.
Prices in London are higher due to the house value, congestion charge plus getting stuck in traffic for hours. I've just underpriced a job. Not the brickwork side but demolition of the old wall took days longer. Mortar was so hard I had to grind the bed joints off a brick on edge . I'm a lot older than you so I just think put in down to experience and learn from it.
Cheers Mark, never thought about those costs being from up north 😂 scary when you under price... just gotta work harder 😂 new video came out few hours ago😊
"You go to school on the first one' as they say. All the research you did clearly paid off because no one would ever know you were a Newbie with lime mortar. If I was the customer I'd be over the moon with that work (and the price!). Great vlog Izzy!
Couldn't be more right there brother! Did lots of research on the job..but didn't research how long it would take 😂😂a all the best mate! New video out now, hope you and the family are well🤜🤛
Amazing vid and I'm in awe of yet another fantastic week's work, Izzy. As you said, you're rightly pleased of the gable finish! Good info given on repointing/ mortar replacing! Also appreciate you taking the time to explain costs of labour/work, and looking out for Drew. Hope things go OK with his motorbike! Finally, ❤ the haircut!
Cheers Alan! So pleased with the finished product of this job! Many obstacles, but wouldn't be one of my jobs without all of them 😂 all the best mate! New video out now😊
Great video Izzy , you are underselling yourself massively mate . They’ve had a good job and a cheap job ! My advice is don’t do repoints unless your desperate, it’s dusty messy , unhealthy hard work ! Stick to your extensions easier to price and easier to do you’ll no doubt get the odd new build too . 👍
Hi Izzy great video again . Thanks for your honesty….. I did ask how much you charge in your last video… ( per metre) . I was getting £45-£60 per metre (2001) so yes …£100.. £120 per metre for cut and struck … all day long … keep the good work up , all the best !
London prices are always higher as the cost of living is astronomical. Great to hear such honesty and integrity. As long as you learn from your mistakes, you will prosper. I hope Drew gets his bike sorted asap. I remember when I was 17, over 40 years ago. My bike needed work which I couldn’t afford, so I cycled the 20 miles to site with my tools bucket strapped to the rack😂 Happy days
Cheers mate appreciate your support! Never thought about those added prices with working in London! And mate, I also use to cycle to work and then catch a train 😂 same kettle of fish me and you 💪
I re-pointed my victorian house in London in Lime mortar 10 years ago. £40 per square metre, £120 for “tuck pointing” using lime putty. I think you have to consider what the customer can/will pay. I wouldn’t pay £7k plus materials and scaffold for 13 days work. Sorry.
It doesn’t matter how many days it takes Paul. If someone earns £600 per day doesn’t mean they have over charged. It can do but can also mean they are good at what they do! Would you pay the same money for the same job if they took 2 extra weeks pissing about? Course you would, idiot.
You wouldn’t get it done then John all that’s a load of nonsense, it’s completely down to the builder, I run a fairly successful business if I could give any advice I’d say to anyone younger know your worth don’t do the job if you know it’s to cheap, you can sit at home and make no money.
@@liamwalters5029 not nonsense my friend. Removed tyrolean render from front of house 40sq metres. Replaced yellow stocks, cills and pillars with York stone from Bingley. Tuck pointed the Red rubbers over the door arch with lime putty. All for less than £7500. Pointing done by a guy who worked on Eton School, Dulwich College and other period buildings. I did get a quote in excess of £10k just for pointing work plus £4.5k for reforming cills. Some builders quoting telephone number size figures, some people happy to pay it, I’m not. I don’t think £3000 for 11 days work is comparable to earning nothing sitting at home.
And sitting at home making no money don’t pay the mortgage bills or feed ya family !! Swings and roundabouts lose on 1 job make up on another !! Best advice is no matter what keep grafting
I don't like to tell others how to do their job but. 😆Try using a modern soft nylon brush for beating the lime mortar. It gives a better finish in the joints without losing as much mortar. (The type in a dust pan & brush set.)
Thanks buddy, I'll give that a go next time I'm doing this sort of work! And I appreciate any information you or any of the watchers have to offer, how we all learn and share methods and become more knowledgeable 😊 new video out now Tony😊
I'm a plumber but a retired business man so always price a job high because its easy to find a way to reduce a price but not to increase it. But Izzy does a great job and should be paid for his obvious experience
Hi , Izzy , this industry is a mine field . No structure to it ( pun not intended ), no standard or process . Hope the tosses get their hands cut off that stole the bike . This world is so messed up . I’m not jealous of your youth at all . Keep building . It’s a Mickey Mouse industry indeed after 40 years it taught me loads .
Izzy, i work as a Project Manager within the industry. Its good practise to always factor Prelim cost into your price, fuel, insurances, site setup waste ect… as you also said you had to absorb some cost. One way of omitting this is by adding over heads and profits to your job. The industry standard is around 10-15%
Thanks so much mate, as I said..I don't often factor these prices in, but I need to start doing it from now on! Thanks for the information buddy, there's a new video out bow😊
Sorry to hear that underpriced yourself. My experience of tradesmen is that they overprice all their work. I once had a plumber who charged me 450 pounds for about 2 and a half hours work and that was about 2010. I’d hate to think what they charge now. No wonder landlords aren’t fixing places up for their tenants.
Hello Wayne from Australia, love your work, regarding your costing, I feel you should as Business you should allow for the cost of your vehicle, insurance, and clothes and Safety Keep up the great work 😊
Credit to you Izzy for sticking to your price. Its one job and maybe you lost a few quid but the goodwill and hopefully recommendations from the client will recover the loss in the future
Thanks very much Phil, I'm not one to start changing prices in the middle of the job, not fair or right! Thanks for the support, there's a new video out now 😊 went up a few hours ago😊
Absolute class Izzy in every department A shouted down to mum Izzy done another video 💃she said ooo send it me straight away she watches all your content luvs it Brilliant Izzy Top man you n Drew top team ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
the brickwork looks amazing, you should be so proud of your standards, their is so much to be gained by working to high standards and while money is important, quality and pride mean so much more. well done izzy
Straight raking and pointing £75 a meter cool. Replacing or turning bricks adds up Izzy but hard to know how many bad bricks with some old properties. Quoted £8k for one job and ended up at £14 k as four chimneys needed rebuilding and some serious structural repairs plus 1000 bricks replaced. Luckily the client was great and understood what needed doing. Took way longer than 8 weeks originally planned for. New lime mortar not cement which caused the damage. We live and learn mate. Underpricing can lead to more jobs though from neighbours or clients friends 👍 Did a mates cheap and neighbours loved what I did and got 6 more repointing jobs as 60s builds they used hardly no cement. Raking out used a brick saw ( Silverline - block saw ) on the beds. Hooked paving/weed tool on the purps so hardly any grinding out. Great channel and really nice job guys. 👍👍👍
A couple wire connectors from Halfords crimped on and taped up would of worked for a couple quid tell drew to get alarmed diskbreak locks and chain make them want to go to the next one .
I’d love to see a breakdown on the RU-vid costs and revenue you bring in through these videos! They are class mate so hope you’re making a few quid of them! Also pleased to see you are getting some brand deals now, keep it up
Love that lime mortar, such a satisfying material to see being used and to use (not that I do much of that!). Lovely house too. Those Asus laptops are lovely - the screens are amazing. Hope it's been good for you since you got it.
Cheers mate really appreciate it! It we t back after a week of use, as I needed something much more powerful to edit all the video's haha Hope your well!
@@IzzytheBricky ah shame, they're normally good units. The latest ones have a fait bit of heft, but get the wrong one and yeah the CPU can be a bit lacking! All good cheers, working my way through your videos bit by bit!
We all made mistakes pricing jobs Izzy. You will learn fast because of that. Repointing is a skilled job so charge top dollar. Its also one of the dirtiest jobs a bricklayer takes on. If its not done right ie, cement mortar over lime will cause damp problems and any movement in brickwork will result in bricks cracking instead of bed and perp joints. You've already found that on that pointing job. Good luck in future.
I’ve done it a few times. I think it’s always sensible to charge reasonable money for a job you’ve never done. As you said it’s a learning curve. You know now.
the reason people charge more for working in london is pretty simple, everything cost more, travel time takes longer and most people have to travel because they cant afford to live there, fuel cost more, food cost more and parking could be £40-50 a day.
Well done excellent job great respect took the job on saw it through that is absolute gold in my opinion lime mortar falls into restoration not many people know how to do it or where it should be applied it is specialist forget day rate charge for the knowledge 🙂
Just some advice on the pointing game buddy, if you have a south facing wall which needs repointing then always cover the wall with HESIAN… to protect from drying out too Quick, Been in the pointing game for 35years 👍
Yes mate, still enjoying it but now I pick and choose what jobs I do, also supply and erect our own scaffolding and supply all the reclaimed stone so all In all I’m happy 👍
Price difference reflects the cost of living area I reckon you do a job in the west end of London it's going to be a big difference to doing a semi or something in Derby or somewhere
The price you charged for the pointing was really cheap. I’ve had about 6 quotes for pointing a 3 bed semi (3no half walls about 3 metres high each). The quotes ranged from £2k to £3k.
Great content as always! Never for one second thought all your editing was done on your phone, why is there no footage of drew catching the thieves? Drew your on RU-vid now come on lad! Haha keep the great content videos coming 👌
Unfortunately, some have no respect for others property, in Drew’s case, the damage is compounded by his reliance on the motorcycle as his only means of transport.
13 days should be £ 5500 k for both of you. It's not business, it's easy, calculate days to do job and multiply by day rate plus materials plus little extra for run around. If you get job then great, if not move on. Your way to good to under sell, good luck
In rake outs, you'll burn 🔥 through blades, grinders, the work you will get from that job should pay back in spades, Get your van with your logo/ RU-vid, Instagram, etc, signed up, do a small biz course, it will pay back 10 fold. Hard work trying to hold onto a good employee, you do what you have to do to keep the show on the road , Good money in re-pointing dusty but easy on the body
Hiya Joe! Thanks so much, I wanna get that on my van..but can't lie ...I need a nicer van 😂 always hard work in this game, but the repointing is so rewarding ☺️ so pleased with how it turned out 💪 Drew is a brilliant lad, 1 in 100! Thanks for the support brother
Don't fall into the trap of having a bigger/ New van, the vans paid for, get your name on it, baby steps, Lad's with big new van's haven't the work to cover monthly repayments, pay wages bills, most are flexing, Money in the bank ( cash is king) employee wages, the van can wait. As you grow your channel, Good things will come, life is a marathon, not a race. Remember the old proverb 🐢 and 🐇
Hi brother, I just did my house with a cement that has lime and cement I also added sand. I don’t know if I had lime mortar in my house , my house was built in the 60s Should I worry?
I was disappointed to see the bricks on the customer window cill. Looking forward to more videos… they can’t complain though given you low ball day rate. Loving the videos great editing 👍🏻
Far to cheap mate, I'm guilty of this too.......! Don't undersell yourself pal.......! I've done a few lime mortar repoints and the finish you achieved looks very decent, I will be using the brush trick from now on bruva ✊️👍
£50pm2 is pathetic. Up that charge. You don’t even use scaffold so you saved them £1500. I’d be charging £60 for sand and cement standard half round. Like goes up to £70 flushed £80 so on… lesson learned. Know your worth bud.
Tell drew to get rid of that bike and get a better brand (Honda Yamaha etc) or do his test and get a slightly bigger bike. The smaller ones need a lot more maintenance and don’t cope well with long commutes.
Question. If a whole house has been repointed in sand and cement and the whole houses external skins mortar has turned to 'dust' does that mean the whole house needs to rebuilt or is there a way to rectify??
Like the vid, and like the work (and the rates seem reasonable at £50 a metre….) do you and Drew do lime pointing on stone? 60 metres or so for our barn? (Near the job in this video)
People should take a leaf out of the lads book you work with, making his own way to the job even though he having trouble with bike, good lad with good attitude, nothing worse than having to ferry some waster all over the place and getting stuck in traffic
We’ve all done it at some point it hurts but you look like you still love the job, after 20 years I fucking hate it (mastic) I hate the people, the job everything about it so I try not to make that mistake but even after 20 odd years I still fuck it up occasionally, i price 99 percent over the phone if I fuck the quote I swallow it as it’s my “mistake” for not looking at it first. Not practical when most jobs are a couple of hours work. But the point being. Integrity !
