This is what made Stockton great, even on defense he was always at the center of the action and never stopped moving the whole time he was on the floor. He was always doing the little things that made him one of the most effective players on the court, and he gets over looked because of that.
Really good interview here with John Stockton who rarely does them. The interview starts at the 6:01 mark. John discusses his short shorts (6:16), the 97-98 season (7:33), dream team (10:56), his durability (9:40), Chris webber remarks on toughness (12:08), karl malone (14:40), missed shot vs. Bulls (16:48), Tim Donaghy scandal (21:50), a retirement that caught some off guard (28:38). podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a-one-of-a-kind-nba-legend-john-stockton/id1561863076?i=1000532187183

4:09 The late great Chick Hearn summed up John Stockton perfectly. "I have never seen one player, in a game, touch the ball as many times as Stockton has, while the other team's got it. And that's why he's the all time steals leader and it's not ever going to be broken.
This video is a clear proof of why the late great Wilt Chamberlain back in 1988 said that if he had one player to start a franchise with it would've been John Stockton. In my opinion he's the 2nd greatest point guard to play the game and he's my favorite player. He showed no fear against any player he played against and also had a very strong body for his size.

@@rece5232 Not stupid. Curry is a defensive liability. Stockton is literally the best defensive pg there ever was. His also has the most assists out of every point guard. How could you be stupid taking Stockton over curry? Curry is the greatest shooter of all time but idk man, I’d take Stockton
Stock drew that foul on purpose. Think about it. Get all the fouls on thier top sell out s-d-mite pos player as you can. I knew it as soon as i saw it back then. He slowed down and drew the contact ..which was the best thing to do.
Surveying that’s even more of a testament to his greatness. U can’t use a players durability against him. Not his fault his game translated with age and theirs didn’t.
Ahem " DUMBASS , STOCKTON GOT THE ASSISTS RECORD IN LESS GAMES THAN IT TOOK MAGIC AND GOT THE STEALS RECORD IN LESS GAMES THAN IT TOOK CHEEKS. SO HE COULD HAVE RETIRED WAAAY BACK THEN WITH THOSE RECORDS USE A STATS RECORD WEBSITE AND DONT LOOK SO STUPID. HE WAS THE BEST TEAM DEFENSIVE PG EVER , THERES NO QUESTION.
@@surveying482 I know this is a 3 year old comment. But only 4 players averaged more steals a game and they all played about 500-800 less games then stockton. Only one player averaged more assists and he played 600 games less. Could they have held up if continuing to play? Maybe...but there was a reason they retired.

I'm glad I grew up watching real basketball like this. The Jazz was my team back in the day... Such a fun team to watch! And John Stockton fought for every single ball... He didn't care how big you were he was sneaking up right in your face and snatching it from your hands. I wish we had players like that today...
Surveying Magic is better but nobody would ever accuse him of being 2 way. If anything he was often a defensive liability unable to keep up with smaller guards
John Stockton played in one of the most conservative and efficient offenses in nba history. Usually working most of the 24 second clock to find the best shot. Imagine if he played in a showtime offense like the lakers.

Wise choice of title you got him here. I now remember that Tim Duncan video where you compile his transition offense and passing ability and gave him a title "Point Forward." Now you got Stockton's defense combined with 3s and gave him "Underrated 3D." That sir, is some genius of you. That remark at 4:10 on him is so accurate.
Stockton is so underrated. He looked like a choir boy and played in a small market but he was head to toe grit and toughness. An intense completive fire burned Stockton's heart. Being the all time leader in assists and steaks speaks for itself but do does his durability at his size. Stockton is pound for pound about the toughest dude who played in league history. He play in the Olympics with a fractured fibula. And Stockton is very underrated as an athlete. It's a lame stereotype. His coordination and reflexes are off the charts. And when he was younger (first half of his 19 seasons), he was lightning ⚡ quick with the ball in his hands.
He played basketball the way it was meant to be played. If I was Caitlyn Clark, I would go back and study John Stockton like a martial artist purist studies Bruce Lee.
You nailed it again! I lowkey wish you'd just stick to making skills videos of oldschool players. Don't get me wrong, your highlights for current players are good but these old school highlights are just way better!
The refs definitely helped jordan in a sus way. Whether be it by incompetence or collusion the odds of a jazz victory were severely reduced by their actions and/or inactions.
I've said this on other videos about Stockton, it is actually a blemish on the history of the NBA that players as great as Stockton never got a ring. I know its bound to happen in every sport where an amazing, hall of famer doesn't get a ring at any point in their career, but it's so hard to believe that John Stockton never got one in his career as all time assists and steals leader. Then you think about how things were during his prime, the 80's were dominated by the Lakers (Magic Johnson) and the Celtics (Larry Bird), then we had the 90's dominated by the Pistons (Thomas and Rodman), Bulls (Jordan and crew), and Rockets (Hakeem and Drexler), and then the early 2000's with the Lakers (Shaq and Kobe)… with one more star on the Jazz other than Stockton and Malone they would have gotten one, I'm almost 100% sure of that. Either way, Stockton goes down as one of the greatest, ring or not.
Wulfriks Reviews I feel the same way the jazz just didn’t have any SG to match up with Jordan him and Malone alone were not beating Jordan pippin Rodman and the rest of that bulls team
Even Drexler pointed out that Stockton and Malone didn't have much help. He pointed out how much of the time it was those two against the world. Hornacek was a good, but not great player. Eaton was a wall on D, but not mobile or an offensive threat. Top to bottom, Magic & Isiah had unquestionably stronger squad's.
Sadly their teams were no match, and the crazy part is that even the Celtics, Pistons etc pale compared to the stacked talent that Bulls bandwagon housed. Not only they weren't getting past Jordan, Pippen, Rodamn, Kukoc, Harper, Kerr etc but, besides all the mismatches with the role players already, already JORDAN HIMSELF couldn't be guarded because Bryon Russell had to somehow plug the gap of Pippen and Kukoc being offensive superstars with Rodman on the glass. They had to put Hornacek on Jordan...
@@dusk6159 Kerr, Harper and Rodman all averaged less than 8 points, Harper was slightly above average on defense and kerrs defense was non existent just like Rodmans offense smh I still don’t understand why people say that team was so stacked when only one player made the all star team
The 90s were NOT dominated by the Pistons. They won their titles in 89 and 90. Rodman left the Pistons in 93 and Thomas retired in 94. They didn't do much in the 90s until Grant Hill showed up in 94 after all those guys were gone, Dumars was the only one left. The Bad Boy Pistons were an 80s team.
People saying he wouldn’t be able to guard the bigger, quicker guards nowadays... watch how he plays defense. His hands are so big and quick he’ll make guards think they can’t even put the ball down to dribble. Most of his steals come from timing the dribbles and poking it away. You won’t even be able to use your power and speed when you can’t even put the ball on the ground. He’s either bodied up and denying the ball, or forcing them off ball which he plays the passing lane better than anybody in history. That’s how he’ll guard bigger guys. Magic was 6’9, he had not problem poking the ball away from him. As the announcer said, ‘I’ve never seen someone touch the ball so much while THE OTHER teams got it.’ His hands are just so strong and active. He’s really a genius of the game.
Good point about taller players actually . . .. the top assist to turnover ratio for a career was by the smallest player that we have seen , Mugsy Bogues . . mainly because he was so close to the ground that no one could ever pick off his dribble. And those in the Nba nowdays are certainly not more athletic than the 90s players . David Robinson by himself could likely beat every one of them in an athletic contest. Athleticism hasnt changed that much in 20-30 years. Its actually decreased in the Nba for the past 20 years. Olympic sprinting is a different animal .. and a subject for another time. AND athleticism isnt even the top thing needed in basketball anyway . . . so those claiming such things show thierself to be two fold ignorant.
I think part of it is style of play back then. They were more faciltators. Point guards now it seems have more of a responsibility to score then ever before.
When you're averaging 12-14 assists a game, he didnt need to score as much. If you take some of those assists away, I would believe he would've scored more.
Your Mom having more stls doesn’t equate to being the better defender. There’s more to def than steals and blocks.. Payton was a much better 1 v 1 defender. Stockton was a great help defender but so was Payton. Which is why he won a dpoy and stock didn’t.
