We all have different views, conditioned by different experiences. Arguments are inevitable, but argue with kindness and respect which will encourage growth and bring us one step closer to truth, by Ajahn Brahm.

just had a baby (8wks old) lack of sleep etc makes it easier for me to lose my temper. a real eye opener as i always thought i was chilled. i love this talk as i suddenly realised that im conditioned in the west to use anger when stressed and it is acceptable to be angry when tierd. but in reality , i should realise that anger isnt the natural answer. peace and kindness and compassion to the person you are arguing with allows them to do the same back. they will treat you with kindness too. thank you ajahn brahm for your talk

I had a coworker who was on the opposite side of every political belief I have. He was a gentleman who could argue without making it personal. I learned so much from him and miss him more than many friends I had who have the same political views I do.

The Great Buddha encouraged us to question and not to be sheep that accept everything we hear. He even wanted us to question his teachings. And to learn to argue with friendship, respect, kindness, that is in the same spirit of being thinking, loving beings that are not merely creatures of conditioning.

“.... we are doomed to argue! You will never agree with me.” What a 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐟 to know that! What joy! I no longer have to try and convince that you’re wrong .... and I don’t have to try and convince you that I’m right. I can let our differences be ... LET OUR DIFFERENCES BE... and save a lot of energy and time instead of wasting it on arguing. .

@nealezumm: The answer in one word is: conditioning; just what Ajahn was talking about. Our experience most of the time has been that mellow people are also weak & lack courage. So, we learn to equate mellowness with weakness, foolishness & other negative qualities & even despise such people subconsciously. Here you have someone who is mellow (which triggers despise), yet has wisdom & courage (which trigger respect). As despise & respect arise in your mind at the same time, you are puzzled.

Operant conditioning is Skinner not Piaget, who created the theory of schemata in cognitive development. Schemata are meaning making between the individual & their world. We actively make meaning from day 1, through life. This is classic Dev Psych, not Buddhist Psych, which says we’re born with effects of previous lives & between those & our reactions of aversion or craving in this life, create new seeds of cause & effect.

I just took Ajahn Brahms perspective of Reincarnation to the reddit forum of atheism.. And those guys are ad hominem monsters :D They are soooooooo angry and personal and brutal. Why is that population so odd ? I know I make mistakes as well and I get drawn into this drama as well.. But it s soooo yucky and stupid.. But they love it.. They dont want a discussion based on fun and respect. They want to kill. Figuratively. They want to be the survivor. The fittest.. :D This world is so weird.

Though he means well, there is this thread of bias that creeps into his discourse. For example, he says that children should not be conditioned or "brainwashed" by some ideology. The problem is, this is simply not possible. There is no ideologically neutral educational program. The fact that he said he went along with Richard Dawkins goes far against his case, as Dawkins is one of the most ideologically oversaturated pundits on the planet. Also, Ajahn made the "true" joke about those with expertise in science obstructing progress. Well, experts are the ones who assist progress, and those who are unexpert do not. Ajahn Brahm means well, and his knowledge of Buddhism is first rate, but this does not make him an "expert" in fields in which he is not expert, and because of this he ends up falling into some basic errors of judgment about things like education and progress.

I went to English state schools in the 80/90's, they were supposed to have collective worship, but they mostly just fudged it, especially after primary school, (that had a slight Christian bias, as it was mostly white English kids), and RE was taught neutrally due to the mixed nature of the schools I went to. Despite this some children with religious parents, (mostly Muslims, but some xtian denominations too), were kept out of RE so that they didn't learn about other's religions. I think it is possible to have an education without religious bias, as it was mostly my experience, but it requires the cooperation of parents to not isolate and indoctrinate their children. Even though there was a slight xtian bias in my education I lean more towards, (without really being faithful), the dharmic religions, as they do not teach that good people are punished for following the wrong dogma. I know I've been conditioned in many ways, but I don't think I've been indoctrinated in terms of religious views, thanks to the schools I went to, and open minded agnostic parents, who resisted my grandparents desires to have me raised either Anglican or Catholic

Mental Elf Everything is indoctrinating for children. Teaching them religion, and not teaching them religion, both are indoctrination. There is no escape from indoctrination, and "non-religion" is not "more neutral." This is a common misconception in our secular age, but secularism is a pseudo-religious ideology, and the fact that you are saying you are glad you weren't indoctrinated is the clearest example of being indoctrinated. I do not mean that in a pejorative way, by the way, just descriptively.

Agreed. Some topics he discussed are not appropriate. Like talking about pedophiles. Saying they are kind who he visited them in prison! How can he get away with saying that!
