UNDERSTANDING COLLAGEN - What it Does, and How to Get It

We hear a lot about COLLAGEN and how important it is for healthy hair and skin, but what is it, what does it really do, and where does it come from?
Collagen is a protein produced by our own cells, and provides the skin, hair, joints, bone and organs with structure and shape. It forms the matrix that holds us together (even the name comes from the Greek “Kolla”, for glue). Collagen is damaged by tobacco smoking, alcohol, high sugar consumption, stress (cortisol destroys collagen in the skin) and excessive impact exercise in the joints. For most of our lives we are able to replenish damaged collagen, but as we age our ability to build new collagen is impaired and eventually we may replace collagen at a slower rate than we damage it. This leads to a gradual decline in the amount and quality of collagen present in the body, resulting in wrinkly skin, brittle hair and nails, and arthritic joints.
A successful strategy for managing this as we age involves:
1) Reducing or limiting ongoing damage, and
2) Enhancing our body’s ability to generate new collagen
LIMITING DAMAGE: We need to reduce - or stop where possible - harmful behaviours like smoking and drinking alcohol; We need to manage our stress and get sufficient sleep; and we need to limit or avoid high-impact activities that are damaging to our joints - at least until they have recovered, and we have been able to address our biomechanics and any imbalances through remedial physical therapy.
GENERATING NEW COLLAGEN: We can enhance our body’s ability to produce collagen and reverse the damage by eating less sugar (carbohydrate) which interderes with collagen production by causing inflammation; eating the correct protein-rich foods high in the amino acids needed to produce collagen (like gelatin, bone broth, red meat, fish and chicken - or collagen supplements); supplement our diet as needed with VitaminC, Chondroitin and Glucosamine (all essential for the efficient production of collagen); and for arthritic joints, start an exercise routine that stimulates collagen production rather than damaging the tissue (cyclical, repetitive movement of the joints for 15min at a time with low load - like stationary cycling or rowing - stimulates cartilage to produce collagen)

Thank you, Andrew. Your videos are the most helpful I’ve seen in a very long time. I just wish I had known this 7 years ago when I had a hip replacement, then another 2 years after. Can you do a video on difference between type I &III compared to type II. Most supplements are I & III
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 5 месяцев назад
I can, yes, but in the meantime know that there's a lot of marketing hype around supplements designed to make it all sound more complicated than needed. Whatever "type" of collagen you think you are getting from the supplement is pretty irrelevant, as your body will break it down into amino acids before it can be absorbed, and the "types" consist of the same amino acids (the differences are purely in the order in which they are conmnected up when your body builds new collagen - so your cells will make the "type" they need, in the places it's needed). That's why it doesn't really matter which "type" the bottle says it is, and also why the most important dietary requirement is to ensure you eat adequate protein (ie amino acids). Your body makes your collagen. A collagen supplement is just giving your body some additional amino acids to work with.
@ajl8615
@ajl8615 5 месяцев назад
@@shapefixerSo collagens are in fact amino acids?
@presence5426
@presence5426 3 месяца назад
@@shapefixer Sorry, incorrect. The digestive system does break down most collagen proteins into individual amino acids... but not all. Short peptides remain (di- & tri- mostly), and they are in fact absorbed into serum. They are bioactive, acting as signalling molecules, stimulating collagen synthesis. The type of animal collagen used to make supplements may or may not matter, because various types may yield unique peptides in the digestive tract. Further, collagen supps contain a unique AA profile: lots of glycine & proline, but also hydroxyproline, which isn't found elsewhere.
@presence5426
@presence5426 3 месяца назад
1 & 3 is the type from animal skin. It's fine to take and will probably lead to improved skin health, possibly other benefits. What matters with type 2 is if it's undenatured. Because research shows that there is a unique mechanism of action with UC-II: oral tolerance. This is an anti-inflammatory effect. ESM may be doing the same thing.

I have had a meniscus trim in the posterior horn of my medial meniscus and, eventhough I am young (27 years old) and very aware of how to take care of my knee, I have autoinmune hepatitis and cannot take suplements as chondroitin and glucosamine. Besides, I need to be in an inmunodepressed state because of my autoinmune disease and I do it by taking corticoids, so it is important I stay active with strength exercise to prevent problems in my bone density and also prevent inflammation. The meniscus absence in the knee on the one hand causes osteoarthritis, and the autoinmunes disease on the other hand causes risk of osteoporosis. My question is more towards the dietary suplementation. I know I can take hydrolized collagen, vitamin C, hialuronic acid and magniseum which have their role in the process of maintaining collagen. Is it the most optimized way to keep my joints healthy and prevent degradation? I already do non impact exercise, just in form of strength exercise and light cardio for me, and eat a healthy diet rich in protein and without added sugars. I have read that type 2 collagen is the best for the joints but I am not sure if I can take it with a hepatic problem. Besides, how do you see the strength exercises as a non-impact and building GlycosAminoGlycan friendly exercise? I am talking about hip bridges, hamstring curls, squats (not with a lot of weight, but enough to feel quads with volume work), unilateral deadlifts, split squats and so on. I don't lift weights for my lower body as for my upper. I'd like to but I think the knee will not be benefited. Also, is it true our body should take a rest from the collagen suplementation? I have read that this is needed to make sure our body does not develop dependency, but this doesn't make sense to me.
@presence5426
@presence5426 3 месяца назад
Collagen supps in your case may be tricky. I'd say try UC-II or ESM, but one way they can work is through "oral tolerance", and in your case you're doing immunotherapy. Hard to say how that would work. If HCP, vit C, HA, magnesium work for you, I'd say that's a good stack. You might look into BioSil, zinc, and copper too.

And since Andrew is saying that no matter which type it is, i.e., I, II, or III, because the body has to break it down and turn it into amino acids that can then be utilized by the body to build new collagen, it might be just good enough. Jellies (preferably made in a rabbit shaped mould and eaten with evaporated milk). 3. Home made pea and ham soup with bacon bones in it. Just the sort of food we had has children in the 50s and 60s. PS : I think a tin of sardines at less than a £1 must provide the greatest variety of nutrients and highest amount of protein (nearly 20g) for the lowest cost of almost any food - a true superfood. If you don't like the fish taste try them mashed up with lemon juice then grilled on toast - the lemon really hides the fish taste.

Collagen is produced by animals so there is no such thing as "vegetarian collagen" except the "vegan" kind that is genetically modified bacteria. Either take a real collagen supplement (from an animal source) or allow your body to make collagen of your own, from the protein you eat.

In addition to eating the proper foods, I would like to add a collagen supplement. When selecting a collagen supplement (collagen peptides), would it be best to select a supplement that contains peptides for a certain type or types?
@shapefixer

Hi Barbara, there are actually 28 types of collagen in your body, so I'd say it barely matters at all which "type" you eat, as its all going to get broken down in your stomach acid and digested. Then your body will build the types you need.

@shapefixer
@shapefixer 5 месяцев назад
Hi. To maintain or grow your muscle mass, particularly as you age, you need to include load-bearing or resistance exercise in your routine (like some weights or HIT training, and not just jogging) and you need to eat sufficient protein to be able to build muscle. Our muscles shrink with age ("sarcopenia") if we dont use them actively. Gaining weight by eating and putting on fat is the wrong way to do it as it will make you sick.

I appreciate this video very much. I went whole food plant-based mostly vegan a few years ago and in the last 2 years my face looks so much older. So many vegan doctors on the internet say your body makes all the collagen it needs. But then others such as yourself are saying you need to ingest the collagen via animal proteins. I'm confused and just want the truth.
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 5 месяцев назад
The truth is collagen is built by your body, out of the amino acids in the protein you eat. So yes, you make it - but you need to eat enough protein, and the protein you eat must have the correct selection of amino acids. So you dont have to take a collagen supplement, necssarily. The problem with plant diets is they are low in useful protein, particularly the amino acids for collagen. (Plants dont make, or even have, collagen - they dont need it). So anyone telling you a vegan diet is fine as your body makes collagen, is not understanding what your body makes the collagen from.
