Love it!! I have mimicked crow calls since a kid and to find a fellow crow caller is great. Look forward to your videos and learning more about crow calling. Quick funny story....awhile back I was outside in front of my house & a crow landed on the roof of the house across the street. He started his caw caw caw, I am over here. Of course, I had to engage him and had him cawing back at me. This went on for a bit then he flew down to a maple tree in the front yard of a neighbor a house down, now he was much lower & directly across from me and we continued our "conversation" although he turned up the volume quite a bit. I was having a great time and indeed we were making quite a raucous bunch of noise. Suddenly, my neighbor came out the front door and said, "I hate to interrupt you guys, but the noise is driving me crazy!" The crow flew off and I started laughing as did she.

That's awesome! It's always nice when you can get the neighbors involved haha! I'm in a new location now so I'm having to start all over with meeting and making friends with my local crows now. But yeah, I used to talk to my crows all the time. Also learned that they find the ocarina (flute type instrument) intriguing. They sit and just watch you side ways lol

@@LearnStuffWithÓnen interesting about the ocarina, as I was just thinking about getting one. I play the harp and a harpist I really like plays the ocarina as well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fo9WPZpo0No.html

It's a nifty little instrument! I'm still trying to get the hang of honestly. I'm not that great at it, but the crows don't seem to mind lol@@Secrent

Sounds like crows and ravens have similar calls sometimes. The ravens in my area say "food" with 3 short structured calls. If they're letting each other know there is no food it's 3 short ones followed by a short pause and then 1 short call. Similarly, two short calls means "human in sight" but with a pause and one call means "no human in sight" I've figured out a few more, just can't explain well enough.

That's amazing! I'm glad to see that the effort of keeping track of the calls is helping out! I really wish we had ravens where I'm at. I'd love to be able to work with them. I actually kept a journal of all the calls I heard and what was going on in the environment to try to figure it out. Where I was, I noticed that the crows would let out 1 long call then 2 short calls when they were on the ground at the food. That was the call I'd later use to bring them in. It's kinda cool how they have their own language and that it changes from group to group and from area to area.

@LearnStuffWithÓnen You know, it's entirely possible that this call you describe means "good" human :) I really think 2 short calls mean "human" or "the two legged ones" or something 🤔 Anywaay.... if you get a chance you could ask someone to walk by and watch unseen. Just to see if they do 2 short ones. And them 2 short, pause, 1 short after the person leaves. It probably sounds a bit insane but I have watched ravens in my home country Iceland since childhood and now have been watching American ravens for some months. And I'll be darned if they don't speak a similar language 😂 I'm almost certain they can count to at least 9. And each number and number combination means something specific to them. I've also found that Blue Jays seem to understand them and may even have similar calls (haven't watched them enough yet).

Oh!! I hadn't considered that angle before! I never thought about the call being about me. That's some good food for thought! Thank you for that. I'll ponder over that with my old notes and see what I can find. Þakka þér fyrir það! Ég tala smá íslensku! Það er mjög cool að þú ert frá Íslandi! Hefur þú talað við hravnana sem voru þarna?

@@LearnStuffWithÓnen Vá, mjög fìn íslenska hjá þér! Jú, ég tala mikið við alla fugla sem nenna að tala við mig og allt á íslensku haha That word "nenna" doesn't exist in English but means "too lazy or tired or both to do something" I forgot to say yesterday that you make very realistic crow sounds. I don't have much experience with them yet, they seem to leave for winter up here (MI UP) and we don't even have them in Iceland :(

Crows are my jam! And we don't have ravens here so, crows and bluejays are my only corvid options. But the crows fit my personality. They are social like me. And thanks for the compliment! Yeah, it took a while to get the sound right with my voice to actually sound like a crow. Several months actually trying to figure it out. Já! Mig langar að fara til Ísland til þess að sjá allt. En, mér finnst íslensku mjög erfitt að læra lol. Konan mín og ég tölum norwegian heima. Íslensku war erfitt fyrir okkur. I taught myself Icelandic through many years of studying, so I hope I'm doing okay at it. Lol I know it's not perfect by any means, but hopefully not too bad.

It has always fascinated me how the different patterns have to mean different things. I've been trying to figure that part out for a while, maybe at some point I'll succeed lol

My wife and I are sitting having coffee, looking out our kitchen window, and when you started making your crow calls, four of them showed up! Two of them came closer than they usually do, and landed on the power line just a few feet from our window. We had the window shut, but they were able to hear you anyway. Thanks a lot! Now I have to go feed them. 😖
