What if individuals and society looks at the concept of being deaf as a positive thing? What if it can actually be a valuable contribution to the world? In essence, this is what 'Deaf Gain' is all about.
The common perception of being deaf and the topic of deafness overall is that it is seen as something negative, something lacking, something void. After all, it's common for doctors to deliver "bad news" to new-parents when it is found that their baby is deaf.
But by re-framing that into a Deaf Gain, it is possible for everyone to look at it in a more positive light, and it's something the Deaf community proudly talks about...that being deaf is actually positive.
So let's get into what is Deaf Gain and why it's an important topic for people in the Deaf community.

Absolutely! This can apply in many areas for various people. Whatever it is that a person is going through or living with, how can we look at it differently? What do you and the society gain from it? How can we move forward with it?

I understand the meaning of deaf "gain", but I wonder if there is a better word out there to encompass this positive outlook on deafness. Personally, I think any of these words might be better: deaf "advantage, benefit, perk, edge, blessing, upgrade". I think they all have nuances that are good. Any thoughts?

I get your concept. I'm not sure if many people think the same, and it will be difficult to change the concept of 'deaf gain' which is quite common. I like your thinking though.

Why do we have to accommodate the hearing world? Why doesn't the hearing world try to see the world from the deaf/hoh, and accommodate us? It would be nice to have a place like Martha's Vineyard were the deaf and hearing can communicate with each other. It would be nice if the hearing world would be more accommodating to people with invisible disabilities, but it's 2024 and it's sad that more normal people aren't more accommodating to people with invisible disabilities. Normal people need to imagine that they are the one with the invisible disability, like they are deaf. And try to respect that person and try to accommodate them. Who know for one day you could be the deaf one from an accident or sickness that made you deaf.
