Been doing this with that exact chart since 2006. Mike Fields was the first person I saw utilize it. The latest developments do be doped in are spindrift, aerodynamic jump and muzzle velocity variations as a function of temperature. Less easy to handle with a set of cards...but inside of 1k and depending on target size, that stuff might not matter.

Those are all definitely factors at longer range. I always encourage people to play around with those variables in their software to get a good picture of how much they drive the overall solution.

Happy to get the info out there. If you want to come out and shoot in Gunnison some time reach out to me.

@@marcushom6789 Thanks for the offer! Coincidentally, my wife and I were just last week calling some lodging options that way to head out toward Crested Butte. I might have to pack up my rig and touch base before we head out that way to check your schedule.

That is some gnarly math 🤯 Sweet to hear it explained out though. Are there apps to expedite this for newbs like me? 😅

Yes there are definitely apps out there. But as I mentioned, my goal for shooters is for them to understand what is going on in the background so if for some reason they don’t have access to the app they aren’t helpless. Come out and shoot sometime. I’ll give you the full rundown.

Adam, the newer Kestrels handle all of it for you. $600-700.

Barometric pressure is the incorrect term, it’s station or absolute pressure. Barometric pressure is corrected.

I understand barometric pressure to be synonymous with atmospheric pressure or the pressure read from a barometer. Where as station pressure is corrected for elevation. Is that not correct?

Why is DA so hard for people to understand? Why are modern instructors still teaching pressure/temp while holding a kestrel? Why lord!!! I’m tired of arguing with people about DA, it’s like shouting at the sky.

Just a foreign concept for a lot of people. Thanks for watching.

Do you have a printable file for that DA chart??
@marcushom6789

I don't. If you are looking for a table like the one I am using a search of google images for "density altitude table" should yield what you are looking for,

This is a good calculator to determine what DA you are at. www.dragtimes.com/da-density-altitude-calculator.php

Altitude is not factor in DA. At diffrent altitude you have different pressure (and pressure is not fix point and it change).

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to get at.

Joso Joso wut.
@josojoso1974

altitude is not a factor in DA i.e. it does not matter at all. Because altimeters actually measure pressure and small changes in pressure. Factors for DA are pressure, temperature and humidity but not altitude.

Joso Joso pilots might disagree. Here’s a link from the FAA. www.faasafety.gov/files/gslac/library/documents/2011/Aug/56396/FAA%20P-8740-02%20DensityAltitude%5Bhi-res%5D%20branded.pdf

The effect of pressure is not mentioned at all in that article. higher altitude only means less pressure. A lot of ballistic programs don’t take altitude into account at all, just pressure. I don't know which device shows the exact altitude without being GPS based. And kestrel measures the pressure exactly, and from the pressure it only calculates the altitude , and if you want the best possible ballistic calculation, the pressure is used not altitude.
