Welcome to "Understanding Soccer in Europe in 4 Simple Steps: A Guide for Americans"
Although from the outside it may seem complex and
confusing, to understand how soccer works in Europe, you really only need to know 4 things.
#1. Each country has its own soccer league.
Seasons runs from August to May in which each team plays every other team twice, once at home and once on the road.
Games are divided into two 45-minute halves and
when the game is over the winner is awarded three
points, the loser zero and in the event of a tie, each
team gets one point.
After each team has played all the other teams twice,
The team with the most points is crowned Champion
of the League. They get a big trophy, a parade and
The season is over. There are no playoffs...sort of
Before the books are closed on the season, there is
Still one small bit of housekeeping to be done. #2.
Relegation. We'll use the German league as an example. Every year when the German league has concluded and the Champion has been crowned, the three teams with the least amount of points are kicked out of the league. This process is known as Relegation. The three vacant spots are subsequently filled by the top three teams from Germany's second division. And unlike say, baseball in the US, teams in the second (and subsequent) divisions are NOT owned by teams in the top Division.
Imagine if the Pittsburg Pirates or Oakland Raiders had to fight at the end of each season just to stay in the league. What if instead of coasting to the bottom for better draft picks, they were fighting to the bitter end to avoid the $40M revenue loss that relegated teams suffer in their first year alone! Not to mention the fact that in England, 9 different teams have gone financially insolvant within 5 years of Relegation.
"OK, interesting enough" you're thinking, but what about that whole lack of playoffs part? #3. Each country also holds an elimination-style tournament, referred to as a Cup. But instead of being held AFTER the 9 month league is over, Cup games are scheduled in between League games, normally in the middle of the week. One additional perk about the Cup system is that teams from all levels (down to semi-professional and even some amateur teams) are invited to play and if they do well, can progress and occasionally even knock off a top team. So every year these mid-week eliminations games continue until there are only two teams left, who play each other in the Cup Final. After 90 min a Cup champion is crowned, they get a trophy, and a parade .
So between the League and Cup games, we get a great picture of who the best and worst teams in each country are. "But wait a second", you ask, what would happen if the best teams from each country in Europe all got together and played each other? "Good idea", #4. The resultant competition is called the UEFA Champions League and it is without a doubt the single greatest club competition of any sport, anywhere is the world. (Think of the NCAA tournament but with better quality of play, more than double the fanbase and quadruple the enthusiasm. And yes, Europe even has their own version of the NIT as well) So, Through a complex and drawn out process teams from all over Europe compete just to qualify for this tournament. And starting each September the top 32 teams are put into 8 groups of 4. Each team plays the other members of its group two times, once at home and once on the road. Come December, the winner and runner up from each group move on the knockout round. And this is where club soccer is at its finest. Teams are paired up individually and again play one home and one away game, with the winner from each pair moving on to the next round until only 2 teams remain. The Champions League Final is then held as a single game each year in May. And unless it's a World Cup year, THIS is the most important soccer game of the year. After 90 minutes, a Champion is crowned, the trophy is awarded, parades commence and all clubs go on break until the madness fires back up again in August. So, to review.
1. Each country has its own league
2. The worst teams are kicked out of the league and replaced by the best teams from the next division down.
3. Throughout the year, each country also holds a playoff type tournament called a Cup.
4. The UCL is a tournament involving all of Europe and is the most important competition in all of club soccer.

the Dutch system works different as well. the nr 18 relegates directly to the first division. the numbers 16 and 17 are paired with the four winners of the four different periods from the first division. (the winner of the conplete season replaces the nummer 18 of the top flight) those six teams (numbers 16 and 17 plus the four winners) are divided into two groups to determine who stays or become a team in the top division. it's actually less complex than it sounds.

One thing that was overlooked and a great fact is that in the English FA Cup you can have (and it does happen) small clubs with semi-professional players going up against the biggest teams in the country. So a pretty average guy working a full time regular job can play in the biggest stadiums with some of the best players in the world. This also happens regularly in world cups and European cups.

One thing i feel had to be mentioned but wasn't. If a club wins it's league, the cup and the champions league in one season it's called the treble. It is the single most greatest achievement known to club football. It has only been done 10 times in European football history. (Edit since this comment section has gone *dented forehead* I was referring to a continental treble. Meaning a club’s respective top flight league, most prestigious domestic cup (because some have more than one) and the champions league. Yes, many more clubs have won 3 or more trophies in a season, but not this specific combination which is what most people think about when they hear “treble”. If some random team wins a cup, preseason tournament, and even another cup, it’s not the treble that gets written into the history books and argued by generations as one of the all time great European teams).

No. Man utd have done it once. Liverpool im not sure about. Pls note: n England if a team win both domestic cups and the league it's not a treble. It's the league FA cup and the champions league. Only those 3 competitions cout towards the treble. Only barclona have done it twice by winning La Liga, COPA del Ray and the champions league.

Most Americans don’t care that they call it Football in Europe and Soccer over here. Most non fans or people who complain that soccer is “un American” mainly bitch about it being boring and flopping. A lot of people here really need to give it a chance, I’ve been getting into it a lot over the past year and it’s way more exiting and fun than most give it credit for. Nobody here really cares about the naming difference other than “oh that’s a little confusing”

I know it is not really important but Belgian first league does employ a play off system. The top 6 play each other twice after the regular season ends, the even half the point after the regular season. So you get 10 matches per team against the best teams of the season and you can definitely come back from behind to win the league because the point total is divided by 2. Very interesting for the casual fans and the fans of the top 6 teams (maybe not the first placed team bc they see their lead cut in half). We have been doing it for almost 10 years and it makes for some exciting games at the end of the year. I must admit that my team usually places in the top 6 and has won a championship bc of this system but still. even though it is very counter intuitive for a soccer fan I really enjoy the play offs.

Few corrections: First thing you need to know about is it's called football. 2. Not all European football's domestic leagues run from August to May. 3. Politically, some of all the countries in European football belong to Asia, Israel, Turkey, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Georgia. 4. The players in European football are the best from all over the world, because the most money is in Europe, think about that for a sec. South America produces some talent, and everywhere else does too, except, on a big scale places like India, China, Oceania, Canada, Indonesia, big places like that but everywhere else does. 5. About league relegation, in the English Championship on the last day the top two teams are promoted to the Premier League while the third place has a semi and then a final playoff among the 3rd to the 6th team in the league for that last spot to the Premier League. And that is just that league, and there are so so many everywhere, so who knows what other ways are being used too. 6.About the Cup, the F.A. Cup in England is something special, it's great to see lower league teams get to play the big stars of the Premier League, and win once in a while. I don't follow any other domestic Cups around Europe, there are just so many. 7. About the Champions League, there is also the Europa League which is the next best thing. By December, the 3rd placed team in each group of the Champions League is promoted to the Europa League to compete in 2 legged playoffs, one home one away. I wouldn't say that the Champions League Final is the most important match in the year when it is not a World Cup Final year. There is also the European Championships, and the people in Africa, South America and everywhere else also have their own little international championship to follow. The passion and pride of supporting your own nation can be all that matters. This is why the World Cup is bigger than the Champions League. Even though there is probably a lot more talent in the Champions League, every man thinks his own country best. 8. Last thing, the transfer window, begins at the very end of the season, and finishes up on the 31st of August, then opens once again for one month only the following January. If a player plays for one team in the Champions League from September to December, and then in January moves to another club in the Champions League, he cannot play for that new club in the Champions League when the playoff's start, this is called being cup-tied. 9. The heart of European football belongs to Germany, Italy, England, Spain, Portugal, Holland, France, Hungary, Czech Rep. it's in places like these that you will find the strongest football anywhere. In global terms, South America, particularly Brazil and Argentina also hold a piece of the heart of football in the world. Ranking of football's popularity on a wide scale by continent: 1. Europe and South America most popular 2. Latin America and Africa 3. Asia and Australia 4. North America and Oceania

+[Amit Bhalla], yes Messi could play for Barca and Man U in the same season...IF Barcelona transferred him to United during the Winter Transfer Window. While I am not sure if there is an explicit rule against a player playing for two clubs at the same time (I will look into it) it would be ridiculously impractical and I am sure that a player's contract with one club would stipulate that he not play for any other clubs at the same time due to injury worries etc. One further point, if Messi would undergo this transfer and he had played in the Group Stage of Champions League with Barcelona in the Fall, he would be "Cup Tied" to Barcelona for that season's Champions League, so he could go to United but he would be unable to play in their Champions League games, if they were in the Champions League, which they won't be this coming season.

*Murica needs to understand there's a HUGE semantic/symbolic difference between..* *FOOTBALL* = the actual name of the sport (Association Football, codified back in 1863, 57 years prior to the founding of NFL & 104 years before the first Super Bowl) + tradition, passion, religion, way of life, quality. By far thee greatest & most popular game ever created. And it's played with the actual *foot* & *ball* (unlike some pseudo-Rugby shit aka Handegg) *SOCCER (SUCKER)* = outdated/annoying af slang term + kinda shitty version of Football (for suckers/losers who just suck ass at the Beautiful Game)

@Rayza82

Its what its called in America, its ingrained in our culture and psyche. Football, you wear a helmet and pads, and you tackle mother fuckers with hatred. But other guys also throw and pass off the ball, others run their ass off, other push people around and block defenders. Some kick or punt the ball to the other team or through some poles for points. There is only 3 or 4 plays that have involvement with the foot, most of the sport does not. I admit, it should be called tackle ball or something. I like calling the internationally loves sport football or futbol instead of soccer, but often make the mistake and call it soccer just out of cultural reflex or something. Almost like saying Jesus Christ or God Dammit as a curse or reaction to something, why do I and people do that, I have no idea, it comes out naturally for some reason. I am not even religious. Soccer is the same thing. Our league is called MLS Major League Soccer, and it is getting a lot more popular and fan bases are growing a lot with chants scarves and everything. When I root I root for the Timbers, Portland Timbers is my team. Or I am a supporter (is that how you say it?) So how you be more inclusive and let us Americans in on the soccer (im sorry football), we love it and who cares what we call it.

+Slingy FC you're such a little bitch, why do you give in to these people. Technically they are both called football. It just so happens that people in different counties simplify it and refer to football to whichever of the two is most popular. In the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand association football isn't the primary sport and so we call it soccer. If that hurts their Latin American/European pathetic inferiority complex enduced ego that's THEIR PROBLEM..... You never give in when someone screams at your face and demands that you call something according to THEIR WHIM, unless you're a little bitch desperately craving their acceptance....

Good video. The only things missing to make it perfect: 1) you briefly mentioned Europe's version of "NIT" (I presume Europa), but didn't elaborate; 2) an explanation of tiebreakers beyond league play (where you did mention 1pt each), esp in knockout rounds; most Americans would get confused unless aggregates are explained, or perplexed how you can resolve 1 game played at home and 1 away (American sports have an odd number of games to break ties); 3) a further explanation of league Cups (e.g. in England, FA Cup vs Carabao Cup); 4) an explanation of transfer (when is the deadline; transfer fees explained; what is "lending" a player).
@tonyh7994
@tonyh7994 4 года назад
This is a great video but there are many exceptions to the norm people may be confused about, and also a few competitions that aren't explained so I've just clarified a few of the anomalies here. Some countries don't have their own league. Eg Vatican City, Monaco, Lichenstein Some leagues aren't from an actual recognised country eg Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Kosovo Some leagues that play in European competition (UEFA) aren't actually in Europe eg Israel, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan Not all seasons run from August to May. Some leagues run from Feb/Mar to Oct/Nov/Dec particularly in Northern Europe where they don't want to play in cold winter. Eg Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia. Also many countries take winter breaks in Dec/Jan where they are off for a month. In most leagues teams don't play each other twice. In many leagues its 3 or 4 times. In almost half of Europe, there is a split. So they play every team in the season 1/2/3 times, and then they split the league in 2 and they play each other once or twice, just the teams in there half of the league. Also what about if teams are tied on points? Tiebreakers like goal difference, head to head etc are used. Relegation is usually not so simple. There is different systems. Playoffs are often used for teams at the bottom of the top division and the top of the second division. Eg bottom of top division is relegated and top of second division is promoted. 2nd bottom enters playoff with 2nd, 3rd and 4th top to decide the other spot in the top league. Also relegation isn't always that terrible. 10 out of the 55 UEFA countries also organise a secondary cup (League Cup). This is not as important as the primary cup but is still important. The League Cup is usually played earlier in the season, some finals are played in September/December/March unlike the primary cup which the final is usually in May the last day of the season. The League Cup doesn't feature as many teams, for example may only involve teams from the top 3 or 4 divisions, unlike the primary cup which can feature hundreds of teams from lower down the pyramid. There's League Cups in all British Isles countries as well as France, Portugal, Iceland, Israel and Andorra. Finals are usually played at a neutral venue like the national stadium. Teams usually enter cups at different stages, so the bigger teams come in later and don't have to play as many games to reach the final. Whereas smaller teams have to navigate earlier rounds to get to the latter stages. Cup games can be played either over one or two legs. So they may be just one game at one stadium or are played home and away. This can alternate depending on the stage. Ie it may be 2 legged games until a one off final at a neutral venue. The Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) for example is all one legged, except for the semis which are played over 2 legs. Cups can also feature group stages similar to the world cup or Champions league. About half of the countries in Europe have a "Super Cup" played in summer before the league season starts or early next season. This is where the league champions play the Cup champions in a one off game. If the same team won the league and Cup then they will play the league runners up, the cup runners up, the game will not be played or the trophy will be automatically awarded to the team that won both league and cup. There is different formats like in Spain they have 4 teams in the super cup, featuring first and second in the league and the 2 cup finalists. This is played with 2 semis and a final. In a 2 legged European tie (Champions league/Europa League game) games are played one at home, one away. Scores over both legs are added up to see who wins. If they have both scored the same total number of goals, then the team that scored more goals away from home goes through. Eg 1st leg: Ajax 3-2 Celtic 2nd leg: Celtic 1-0 Ajax Total : Ajax 3-3 Celtic Celtic scored 2 away goals whereas Ajax scored 0 away from home, so Celtic go through. If the score is the same in both matches then extra time and penalties are used as normal. The Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup are also not, explained. The Europa League is the secondary European competition featuring the next best ranked league teams not playing in the Champions League as well as domestic cup winners. The UEFA Super Cup is where the Europa League winners play the Champions League winners in a one off game at a neutral venue. Remember the Champions League only determines the European Champion. There is also an Asian Champions League, a North American Champions League etc. The winners of all these 6 continental tournaments qualify for the Club World Cup. The Club World Cup is where each continent's club champion plays in a tournament to determine the Club World Champion.
