The first video about FM that explains how radio stations can be told apart. The whole concept of deviation and spacing in frequency is well explained. Thanks

Hey nice video and thanks a lot! If I understand correctly, the deviation ratio is exactly the concept: modulation index=delta_f_max/f_m, as what I learned in the RF electronic courses, right? From my lecture, the modulation index is a function of the voltage amplitude of the modulating signal. So if I use an external source (10kHz) to generate the modulating signal, and set the maximum frequency deviation on the R&S as, for example, 100kHz. Will the frequency deviation change if I change the voltage amplitude of my external source?

How is signal added to carrier wave? What exactly occurs in the spot where they are added together? Why does carrier wave change just because because signal is added to it? What device is used to add the carrier wave and the signal wave together? What happens at the other end, how is signal extracted from the composite waves, how is done and by what?

Modulation involves changing some property of the carrier (in this case, its frequency) based on the modulating signal - they're not really "added" together. In the case of FM, a special device called an FM (de)modulator is used. The actual details of how the carrier frequency is changed by the modulating signal (and how the modulating information is recovered at the received) is somewhat beyond the scope of this introduction, but there are many, many sources of information on this if you'd like to deeper. [Incidentally, there are multiple different techniques for demodulating an FM signal, e.g. quadrature, PLL, etc.]

Is this the the same guy from Afrotechmods? They sound really the same. Like my first reaction was "WTH!!!"

(laughs) You know, I've watched Afrotechmods many times and I never really noticed the similarity until you mentioned it. But no, entirely different person - I do all of my own recordings myself, for better or for worse :)

Can you do one about Phase modulation?
@pauldenisowski
@pauldenisowski 3 года назад
Purely analog phase modulation is pretty rare, but I did make a video about Phase Shift Keying as well as one on APSK and QAM :)

I missed a bit the fact that frequency and phase are interlocked in each other in your formula. Each FM can be described as phase modulation. Yes, I'm nitpicking...

Not nitpicking at all, just something I didn't have the time to go into in this video :)

As you've all probably noticed, this video is really more about FM in the radio frequency domain, not the audio domain :)

@@pauldenisowski Still useful to visualize. Also when you thing of the sidebands as harmonic content it all fits. Unless I completely missed the boat ^^

Another nitpick: The maximum modulating frequency of commercial FM radio broadcasts is not 15kHz but rather over 38kHz due to the stereo encoding and even over 57kHz for added information (RDS in Europe, TTY/CC in North America)...
@PascalGienger
@PascalGienger 3 месяца назад
Now I understand - you meant the usable audio spectrum - yes that is 15 kHz and the first FM radios had it even lower (13-14kHz) to have their rather bad analog low pass filters to mask out the pilot tone. I love FM. I built my own FM stereo receiver 1986 at age 15. And when disabling the stereo decoding and low pass - you could record the mono FM signal on a tape machine and actually hearing the pilot tone when running the tape at half speed...
