this was soooo helpful! i was getting really frustrated knitting a swatch and saw the fabric was looking so transparent. you really gave a comprehensive overview about gauge and i learned that i can just use a thicker yarn! you explain really clearly. thanks so much :)
I had a pattern for fingering yarn with a 4mm needle and I wanted to use dk yarn but then my needle too would change but I don't know what needle to use 🥲
Are you making a shawl or a sweater? Because if you use a different sized needle, your gauge will change. If you’re making an accessory, that’s fine, but if you’re making a garment, it will be too large.
At the end of every day, I ask myself, “What did I learn today?” The prize for this week goes to your wonderful lesson about mastering another chapter in the big book of yarn. Thanks.
Question..... if i have a pattern that need a 23st gauge. I found some yarn with the lable 26st gauge and another yarn with 20st gauge. Which yarn would be the best to choose??? The one with more or the one with less st gauge, to get to the 23st gauge i need???🙏🏼
Both of those are fairly far off from your desired gauge, so I would need some more context. Is the pattern gauge in stockinette or in a pattern stitch? Is it a garment or an accessory? What is the gauge of the yarn used in the pattern? Light weight yarn is often met at a looser gauge to give a fabric with a lot of drape. If you use the heavier weight yarn, the one that knits at 20, your fabric might be stiffer than you want.
This is a very important video. I learned a lot. I've been doing the 'math' for years to make sweaters, but had never delved into this subject of gauge. I love it and can't wait to make a loose, drapey sweater for next summer. Thanks, Lynda
