Understanding Giovanni's Room: A Faculty Panel Discussion 

One hell of a rich chat! thank you all so much...mother earth indeed ;=) In the fifties we were all in kind of a time machine, we knew we couldn't discuss what was happening until writers like these started talking. It was just too...murky like badly received b/w fifties television, quiet, silly commercials we could tolerate and try to ignore... We ALL felt all of this darkness and need for clarity and on the time machine walls were rhymes we jotted to remind us...why we were going through it.😌

I'm from India , my first book read by JB....I loved it and hated it all I can say....the tears were hot and unrestrained and the pain was hollowing

Thank you for this! I just finished reading the novel and really wanted to hear more about the context and James Baldwin and anything relating to the story. This really helped me to have a deeper understanding and appreciation for what he was really perhaps approaching in writing this novel. I just really really appreciate all of the voices and contributing members of the panel. I live in Iowa :-) LOL, but really love all of the information and ability to tune in and hope you all have a wonderful summer! :-)

The women in red is unconditionally a non-reader if she cannot follow, and finds herself unconnected to the begining of Giovanni's Room. David never finds himself, Jacque and Giovanni do know themselves; Giovanni has emotionally grown since leaving his village.

Yet another staggering example of people not mentioning the religious imagery in the book. It was suggested that the flow of his writing had been coloured by his preaching but the imagery and religious themes for that matter were totally ignored.
