I saw this video in July and my husband and I started studying in August. Tonight he passed the Technician and General exams and I passed the Technician. Thank you for putting up this video as we would never have done gotten into Ham radio without it. I also got my GMRS license and HT GMRS radios for rest of my family. We really appreciate both of you!

I noticed you didn’t mention GMRS radios which also do FRS frequencies in addition to high power frequencies. They can reach up to around 20 miles line of sight. This is probably a good option for many people. I applied for a license and received it within 24 hours with my call sign. So now I can transmit up to about 20 miles with my $85 radios from Walmart. License fee was $70 for 10 years. No studying or test to pass.

Mike, I was listening to your podcast with Josh regarding this subject and wanted to shed some tight on how the EMCOMM works. (My apologies if you figured this out already.) When you respond to a larger emergency that has a number of responders, one person sets up a base to communicate with all the responders via UHF/VHF (short range, reliable audio) and also has an HF rig to get the word out beyond the area of the incident. Think of a wild fire that takes out all landlines and cell towers in an area and you need to coordinate with EMS-hospital 30 miles away outside a valley. The APRS radios for the responders is great for keeping track of your team in an unfamiliar area to get the most accurate information quickly. 73 Marshall

I live literally miles from nowhere and I can't get any signal from anyone, ever. I can get noaa, but that's it. We are self sufficient mostly, raise our own livestock and grow lots of own food. I have the baofengs, but the closest place to take the license exam is 200 miles away, so that's not an option. Kind of sucks for communicating with people because there're no radio geeks in my area. I'm thinking of making an antenna to mount on our barn.

Hey! I've noticed quite a few people are concerned about the price of ham radio equipment. I have Yaesu and Icom gear but I also have 5 Baofeng HTs. The quality isnt the same but they are still rugged little radios. Amazon has a special on UV-5Rs where you get 2 batteries for the HT, the radio and a charger for around $35 USD. I dont use them often but they work perfectly fine and I think it's a great and cheap way to get into ham radio! Maybe if you dont have a video on these cheaper radios you could do a video?
@zackalvey2822
@zackalvey2822 4 года назад
Added caveat. I realize you talk about Baofeng here but again I think that people are sometimes scared away by the price of the radios. If you are serious about survival gear, ect, $35-$50 isnt that bad for comms.

Thats all great, but you missed 2 major players in Comm's... 1) GMRS (no test needed- you just buy a license good for 5 people I believe). 2) The most widely used Comm. unit- the CB Radio. Sure its antiquated, but thats your most effective conduit to reaching outside people when needed... We have all HAM and GMRS licenses. Personally, while I don't use much CB, I think its detrimental not to have one. GMRS can also connect long range when needed- and every bubble pack radio has GMRS on it. Thoughts anyone?

That's actually only 2 of 3 considering how there is the MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) radios that not a lot of people know about but it's also a good setup for comms but I agree with them missing the GMRS and CB radio setups for comms. They have a lot of stuff to cover if we have to fully envelope the communications topic and I'm waiting for more content.

@QuietWatcherObserving
@QuietWatcherObserving 2 года назад
A person with a license can allow someone else to talk if they are physically with the other individual. Since you are talking about a set of them, I assume they all wouldn't be in the same area since then you would be fine with just 1. :) You would need multiple licenses then. The tech test is easy enough if your people are willing to study a bit. If not GMRS is probably the way to go so you can just purchase a license without having them study.

I got my ham radio license in high school in 1987-88 in Newport Washington How do I find out if it is still valid

I’m afraid it won’t be, the license requires a yearly renewal. However, you don’t have to test just register with your call-sign.

it will be expired.. actually a Amateur license last 10 years... you can go on the FCC website and do a search for your license. more than likely your old call sign may of be reassigned. a lot has changed with the bands and allocation since that time, so it would be best to restudy and take the test. i just renewed mine on line for the 2nd time. it took less than 5 minutes to do. of course my address and info hadn't changed either.

The test that he refers to (ham)is simple if you are very well versed in electronics and ham radio. If you are a person who wants a radio to talk on to do it legally? HELL no!!! This test takes alot of time and memorizing!

I’m just beginning to learn the basics....was considering a purchase but am now told that in the great state of CA, ham radio is no longer an option. Any other options or suggestions??

That’s not true, ham radios are allowed in your state Josh is actually from California.

Hi Jessica, we're OK in california. The issue that was happening has been resolved. Even still, if the gov. got their way in removing some of the repeaters in question, we as hams would find another way and keep moving forward!

You still didn't discus Han Radio during survival. Use uses it, citizens only? Does the government use it? for example, to broadcast news or instructions?

Pro tip: you don't actually need to worry about a license. You just need a call sign.
