Manny's organized a four part series on understanding homelessness in San Francisco. The series is designed to inform and empower you to: (1) be able to explain who is homeless in San Francisco and (2) answer questions and perhaps correct misunderstandings about the demographics of the city's homeless community and cogently explain the various ways folks become homeless in our city.
In Part 1, we discuss the root causes of homelessness in San Francisco and beyond with the city’s foremost subject matter expert, Margot Kushel, MD. The conversation demystifies the realities that trigger people losing their homes and delves into the the complex factors that keep people homeless.
Dr. Kushel is Professor of Medicine at UCSF, Division Chief of the Center for Vulnerable Populations, and Director of the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG). Her research focuses on reducing the burden of homelessness on health through examining efforts to prevent and end homelessness and mitigating its effects on health care outcomes. Margot is a primary care physician at ZSFG’s Richard H. Fine People's Clinic. A leading homelessness researcher, her research has been funded by the NIH, government, and foundations.
