I’ll never forget the moment I realized Kendrick Lamar is a genius. I was listening to good kid, m.A.A.d city for the first time when the 4th track, The Art of Peer Pressure came on. It’s a 5 and a half minute journey through Kendrick’s teenage memories, aided by immersive passages of voice acting that depict a formative run in with crime Kendrick had as a young man. As the song crept along with its nighttime synths and lo-fi drums, I lost track of reality. The way Kendrick retells his attempt at a home invasion was so realistic I found myself thinking, just for a moment, “wait...how did he get a recording of this?” before doing a double take and laughing at my own stupidity. Today I want to explore the brilliance of the man who could very well be hip hop’s greatest of all time. Let’s learn more.

There's a video by Adam Neely which talks about the award. Basically, he compares this to Wynton Marsalis winning the prize, when earlier Jazz works probably should've before. A large part of the reason for awarding him the prize was a sort of recognition of earlier works, and a sign of things to come. He explains it better here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q8Ua5nxOFk0.html

Kendrick is a great storyteller and social commentator but “Warriors and Conans hope euphoria can slow dance with society the driver seat the first one to get killed” even dusts Nas at his peak. When Genius writes 6 pages for one verse on “These Walls” you know he created something so deep that even the OG’s need to sit and learn. Maybe it’s not something to bump in the background but no GOAT makes Muzak, GOATs demands you to “sit down, shut up and listen”.

Its an amazing line and I do prefer Kendrick over Nas by small amount but there’s no reason to constantly compare artists like people do. Nas is one of the best ever, same with Kendrick, Rakim, Tupac, Wu-Tan, Tribe, etc. There’s room for more than one.
@120nsb
@120nsb 5 лет назад
Nas on his worst album has verses and concepts that no rapper will ever be able to replicate. He literally personified a jail cell in Nastradamus. Kendrick really is great and will go down as one of the greatest but y'all need to chill with some of the comparisions and praises because he's not the end all be all of this shit. P.S. If you're that excited about the "These Walls" thesis, try to explore the theories behind "Streets On Fire" by Lupe Fiasco, it's a dope song and you may end up having fun.

I feel like you didn't research DAMN enough because that album is thematically heavy as hell. It tells two different stories depending on what order you play it. It won a Pultizer prize for a reason. The rest of the video was pretty solid except for skipping Overly Dedicated, which is widely respected.
@bboy567011
@bboy567011 6 лет назад
i agree overly dedicated definitely should’ve been shown some love i think it was a significant jump in his sound prior to his first album
@KaizerMan
@KaizerMan 5 лет назад
How does it tell two different stories? People always say this but lack the proof that there’s two tangible stories. Imo it’s instead just ambiguous narratives that may loosely exist if we pretend they do, and which are interrupted in between with questionable lyrics like ‘syrup sandwiches’, ‘I’m not black I’m an Israelite’, and more. Only a few of the songs clearly fit into the supposed narrative, the majority of the songs are just ambiguous though right down to their one word titles. Like LOVE. is about Love, LUST. about Lust, etc. You can’t really suggest LOVE & LUST are about some random story of Kendrick being damned to hell in forward order and resurrected when played backwards or something like that lol.

This analysis took me back to when I used an iTunes gift card to buy Good Kid Maad City as the first new album I'd bought in maybe, 3 years at that time. I swear to all that is holy, I sat in my room and listened to the whole thing and tentatively texted my girlfriend "I think this album might be the best album I'd ever heard". I swear I said "This is like a movie more than an album." It changed my life, not even kidding. I don't listen to alot of music I don't already know well. I'm white, was studying art, and hearing the artwork Kendrick made changed what I understood I could do with art. That album is when I see myself making the change from art to activism and politics. Since then, I still walk up to the U.S. Capitol listening to Kendrick to work for, and I swear this is true, Senator DUCKWORTH. My birthday is June 17th, same as Kendricks. I'm by no means a stan or crazy fan of anyone's, but I'd be lying if I didn't attribute Kendrick Lamar's music to turning me onto the thing's I care about most now. He did in an indirect way turn me onto James Baldwin, actually reading MLK instead of just taking the day off work and remembering he had a dream, and confronting my own white privilege in a way that doesn't feel antagonistic, but feels like I'm truly working on making myself a better person while understanding with no doubts that my voice is far less important than those with real, lived, experiences.

Good video. Kendrick is one of the most talented writers out there right now. A lot of credit should go to his parents for raising him so well. Moving to Compton to escape gang violence, working jobs, instilling Christian values, maintaining a family unit: all of these things contribute to what makes Kendrick such a talent.

Watching this exactly two weeks before his next album release "Mr Morale & The Big Steppers" on May 13, 2022. I only recently discovered how great Kendrick was a year or so ago from writing this, yet he has quickly become my favorite artist to date. Typically, my reaction to new albums dropping is "oh, cool," and days after the album had come out. It is not a coincidence to me that I am aware ahead of time of his newest album, and it is also not a coincidence that I cannot wait. However, that is not to say that I don't feel a little guilty about putting so much pressure on Kendrick. The whole world of music is watching him closely and expecting great things. Naturally, I am as well, however, I hope he knows that I mostly look forward to hearing his voice on a fresh set of tracks.

mguan17 He doesn’t give the same vibe as Kendrick think about the greatest rappers of all time is Tupac and Biggie Kendrick Is In Both Modes Joey’s Flames But He’s like Nas Or Jay Z The Eastcoast Needs A modern Biggie Like the West has Kendrick like the modern pac or ice cube Kendrick fits into their lanes as goats Kendrick is the modern embodiment of west coast hip hop and pushes that legacy from too short Mac Dre e40 and Nwa started in the 80s To now he is the evolution of all good and lyrical west coast rappers joey can’t fit into that when you talk about joey he can’t be in the best eastcoast rapper of all time conversation like how rakim Krs-one Biggie Busta rhymes Prodigy and others can he needs that introspective album that cultural album the he will he can be compared Look at pac and big me against the world and ready to die are introspective albums and all eyes on me and life after death are there big second efforts that are the standard of being a great rapper Kendrick done that and more what’s joey’s first album he was introspective about what he’s a good rapper but not a good story teller if he fixes that then i will agree

Joey may be on par as an emcee, but as an artist Joey Bada$$ is heavily lacking. He’s yet to put out a classic album & nearly all of his songs revolve around the same subject matter of ‘fuck the government’ sort of conscious rap. It’s a shame because I like Joey & want him to fulfill his potential, but B4.DA.$$ was the last time he impressed me, since then he’s felt kinda stale with AABA

Kendrick is like Tupac reborn.First album they come out woke and full of talent but not yet matured.Second album they show growth in art and poetry with captivating story telling.Third album they reveal deep emotions,educate,and strive for humility.Fourth album they break barriers and combine all the qualities they have in one project.

@@renzelkamuro2944 why can't he compare though? Pac might've connected with the people more and revolutionized hip hop, but Kendrick, in my mind anyways, is a million times better at songwriting and his production makes his music much more interesting to listen to over Pac's.

Not really. If anything MATW is most comparable to Overly.Dedicated with how intimate, concise & personal the projects were. Then All Eyez On Me would probably be GKMC because of the commercial, west coast, bump-in-the-whip sorta rap vibes, whilst DAMN could maybe be compared to 7 Day Theory I guess since both were more minimalistic than their predecessors, and the rest I can’t really compare. It’s a clunky comparison anyway, and it may work if we use that cookie cutter simplified similarities of ‘being woke but not matured’, then ‘growth & captivating stories’, etc but that can apply to most artists discographies. Overall Kendrick’s career path can’t really be compared to 2Pac’s

Great video, i only had one problem with it. Saying that J. Cole and Joyner Lucas is too outspoken and philosophical, to ever get a mainstream appeal, is ridiculous. Well to be fair I don’t know Joyner Lucas well enough to commentate on his music. But I can certainly say that J. Coles music is not philosophical, yes he does tackle complicated and relevant issues in morderen day society, but ever time he does so, he describes the situation and solution with so little nuance. Like on KOD his main moral on a lot of his tracks are, don’t do drug drugs are bad, and I completely agree, but he don’t mention anything about why these people take drugs in the first place, or anything like that. He’s is basically making it seem as these problems have a definitive answer, and lack a great amount of nuance when setting up these dilemmas.

i think what he meant was that j cole is a lot more blunt and preachy in the messages in his songs, no ill will towards him, just that kendrick delivers his message in a more lowkey fashion

Conrad Obling J Cole is like a smart preacher. Not everyone wants to hear his answer to the problems he bring up + Cole is terrible at features. Joyner Lucas is very similar to Nas’ “It Was Written” where you’re between an audiobook and an album. This is also interesting but too demanding to enjoy as music.
@panashechauruka109
@panashechauruka109 6 лет назад
Conrad Obling I think you didn't catch the message behind K.O.D ...the album tackles a whole lot more than just staying away from drugs... it's central focus is actually on pain and how to deal with your pain wisely. But it also touches on- loyalty in relationships, addiction, taxes, rap beefs, being a good role model amongst other things. It's fine if you don't like it though!
@barbra4421
@barbra4421 6 лет назад
J Cole definitely addressed why people do drugs... did you listen to the track FRIENDS? - “There's all sorts of trauma from drama that children see Type of shit that normally would call for therapy But you know just how it go in our community Keep that shit inside it don't matter how hard it be Fast forward, them kids is grown and they blowin trees.” J Cole specifically references just one example of why people in black communities do drugs, and that’s only one example. But J Cole makes it clear throughout the entire album that the problem with drugs is not one dimensional and everyone should just stop doing drugs. He recognizes that the problem runs deep and even J Cole himself has problems with addiction. That’s why KOD not only stands for “kids on drugs” but also “King Overdose.”

Hey, I know this is old and you probably don’t have necessarily the same opinions anymore, but DAMN. is actually incredibly dense and substantive- and the fact that you can overlook that is what makes it so great. It’s his most complex narrative yet (I can talk about what that is and how it’s delivered for hours) but is packaged in a way that makes it just as enjoyable to listen to without it, as if it was just another group of great unrelated songs.
