It is a highly aggressive cancer that affects the exocrine portion of the pancreas. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, age, family history of pancreatic cancer, chronic pancreatitis, diabetes, alcohol consumption, and exposure to certain chemicals.
Pancreatic carcinoma is difficult to diagnose because it often does not produce symptoms until an advanced stage. Symptoms include abdominal pain, back pain, jaundice, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.
Diagnosis involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, imaging tests, and laboratory tests. Imaging tests such as CT scan, MRI, PET scan, and ultrasound are used to produce detailed images of the pancreas and surrounding tissues to identify any abnormalities or tumors. Biopsy and blood tests may also be performed.
Pancreatic carcinoma can be classified into different types based on cell types and growth patterns, including adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine tumors, acinar cell carcinoma, solid pseudopapillary neoplasm, and pancreatoblastoma. It can also be classified based on its location within the pancreas.
Stages of pancreatic carcinoma include Stage 0 (carcinoma in situ), Stage I (cancer confined to the pancreas), Stage II (cancer has spread to nearby tissues or organs), Stage III (cancer has spread to nearby major blood vessels), and Stage IV (cancer has spread to distant organs).
Treatment options depend on the stage of the cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy. Pancreatic cancer has a low survival rate, with only a 10% five-year survival rate. It is important to detect and diagnose pancreatic carcinoma as early as possible to improve treatment outcomes.
