Roger is brilliant - we are so lucky to have this mentoring. Wonder what it was like for beekeepers 20 years ago! Trial and error no doubt.

I have successfully cut out fantastic QC’s from plastic foundation. I used a scalpel and took my time (@ 6 from memory) and every one was perfect. There was a tiny hole above the RJ that I plugged with some wax. The queens emerged without issue.

7:52 I believe the term is 'eclose', Roger. According to an online dictionary I found... eclose VERB (intransitive) entomology (of an insect) to come out of the egg or the pupa case Thanks for all your great sharing of information.

Roger says the easiest way to raise queens for a small scale beekeeper is the emergency response, removing the queen from a hive and adding grafts to that hive once the hive realises it is queenless, would the bees not be more inclined to ignore the grafts in this situation and raise queencells from brood already present on frames in the hive. Would leaving the hive queenless for a period till there is no viable brood in the hive 1st and then introducing grafts to them be better?
