When was the last time you went down the acoustic treatment rabbit hole only to come out hours later with your brain on fire?
(Or just totally numb, followed by a confused nap..?)
I’m sure that’s what happened to our fellow sound nerd Lucas when he decided to shoot over an email.
In a nutshell he wanted to know what happens at the intersection of two room modes, when there’s a step in the geometry of the side walls and your listening position is placed exactly at the edge of this step.
If you’ve come across something similar, you’ll know exactly where Lucas is coming from.
Surely in front of the step, one room mode is created, and behind the step another one gets created?
How do you make sure that you don’t end up in a confusing mish-mash of these two room modes, and only have to deal with one of them instead?
It’s definitely an interesting question and solving this problem has more to do with getting back out of the rabbit hole and seeing the whole rabbit hill, instead of figuring out a solution while you are deep in it.
Let me explain what I mean in this week’s video.

Thank you Jesco... I've been relying heavily on headphones on mixes..... I hope your download will help me in my bedroom "studio" monitor system.

Is there a benefit to leaving your room "open", that is to say using the remainder of the building you're in as a noise sink. There must be a size of room where it makes more sense because the closed box approach means the room modes come at progressively higher frequencies. For example in John Darko's videos of his portuguese home, he has a stairwell in each corner behind the listening position.

While watching I wondered whether one could (in theory) create an angled wall (not perpendicular to the others) which "created room modes" across a specific frequency range to boost dips in the frequency response. That is, instead of absorbing energy, what if we tried to "redirect" it to flatten the frequency response? And then I discarded the idea because I'm guessing it would destroy phase response..

If our ears can suss out the direct sound from the reflections as long as they are >60ms…does this mitigate reflection problems in higher frequencies?

Hello, I inherited an old audio equipment from my grandfather. This is an AKAI am 2450 amplifier (45 W per channel at 8 oms) with two speakers model SW 177. Three way 4 Driver 94 db. I want to know if it is a good deal to refubish and maybe upgrade it to put them in my small room (4mtsx3mts and 2,90 tall). I think because they are enclosed speakers I will got better control of the low band altough maybe I need to treat my room maybe. Whats your opinion. Thks Very Much!!!

Hi! It is possible to decrease the low end accumulating to the back wall in an very small shoe box room? Could an membrane panel on the back wall will help or better an resonator? Seems that it is hard to find any of that on my country and they are very expensive. Thank you!

So yeah, even though I'm interested in the science, my top priority is to find a good starting point for the quest to find the best listening position. Unfortunately, my room is L-shaped with a slanted roof, a roof window, balcony door and window, other room doors. What's more, there are loads and loads of furniture I have a hard time to move, and I've already moved in my gear, too. That's why it's almost impossible to go with the bass hunter technique. All the corners are blocked by granma's furniture... I really would need some advice to where to begin, actually. Do I have to completely empty the room , then apply the bass hunter technique? But what if I put the furniture back in afterwards? Wouldn't it render the entire process in the empty room useless? I'm kinda stuck here, I just figured out a spot I kinda like, facing the slanted roof, with a wall to one side, but like no wall at the other side. To my old and fucked up hearing, it sounds ok-ish, but my measurements with REW tells me the position is awful...

If you plan to leave the furniture there, then it becomes a room "characteristic", which you have to deal with and thus looking for a listening spot with all the furniture in your room. If your plan is to clear the room and start from scratch, then you'd better make all the tests in an empty room, unless you already have some bass traps, which would make your tests easier. Sorry for an obvious answer. Nothing wrong with relying on REW. In this case I'd look for a spot with peaks & troughs spread out across the spectrum as much as possible, avoiding them to form one giant peak or trough.

@@zerobject Thank you! Now that you mention it, it seems pretty obvious with the furniture haha. Thanks.
