Understanding Semen Analysis Result
Before semen is produced, there are certain things to be done.
1. There must abstinence 2 or 3 days before ejaculation
2. Semen production should be by masturbation- Condom is not allowed in this process because of the spermicide inside the condom that could kill the sperm. Produced semen should be delivered in the lab within one hour. Do not freeze it.
6 Parameters to look for in a normal semen:
a. Volume of the semen- Normal volume should be between 2-5 mills.
b. Sperm count- Normal count should be between 20million to 200 million per mill
c. Motility- At least 50% of the sperm must be progressively motile
d. Morphology- At least 70% of the sperm must be of normal form and shape
e. White Cell Count- This is a reflection of whether there is infection or not.
f. Liquefaction- Normal sperm liquefies within 3o minutes
