Thanks Greg. Will do! 😁 I have enjoyed they let me knock out topics that would have otherwise been lost in a large video. Sometimes I just got to say my beef, like with spaces in column names. 😂
Shane, I have been following you for quite a while and you always surprises me with these tips & tricks they are great! I got myself in trouble using "Last Name" and "First Name" and all the pain coming from using complex columns in SharePoint. I couldn't agree more with Greg Phiilips... Keep'em coming! Thanks!
Thanks Shane - I will be using this link regularly on the Power Users forum to convince people that code gymnastics is really not necessary with proper data structure planning (something I have been banging on about regularly).
AWESOME QTT! the series is awesome. Can you talk about Parent and Child Database setup in SharePoint. Tips and tricks to manage them and interact with them.
I will see what I can do. The repeating tables like InfoPath series I do quite a bit with relationships in SHarePoint if that helps. Also, this video covers it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-43ekj5MlNJU.html
I learnt the column name thing the hard way using the old rest queries. If you think this is bad try writing the name in language like Japanese. It shows it all as hex. Even more fun, create the column in a different language browser and then look at it in an English one. It stores a display name for each language plus the name it was created in. Really screws things up on the new format columns that use json as it doesnt keep both names in the json formatting, so when you put things in sections they don’t stay there when you move back to the other language.
Shane, I can't tell you how many times that I've wrestled with the SharePoint column naming. I figured it out by trial and error about NOT putting spaces in the columns was the way to go...and I found out that renaming columns in SharePoint didn't break the app...but you have (once again) provided brilliant clarity. Thanks. (As far as future ideas for videos, maybe you could provide some insight into producing printable/email-able documents from PowerApps, without using a "premium" Word connector?)
Hi, here is something I am looking for that i have seen others other ask for, that would likely be a poweraps and automate Combo. Not sure if this is quick or super complicated:). In a poweraps form, users are attaching an excel spreadsheet (via either an attachment or as a URL stored in a sharepoint library, could be either). Goal is to read some info from the excel sheet to populate some of the form fields.
Angela someone else asked exactly this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QcWjAt7QVn4.html&lc=UgzT6w5JkH4cUl5FowB4AaABAg if you look at that video and then comment from Chris you should get some hints. :)
Around 6:26 you mentioned creating a single line of text field in SP and you can code the choices in the PowerApp. Do you have a video on how that is done? Thanks for posting these videos as they are tremendously helpful!
Awesome Shane! Keep up the great work! Can you dive a bit deeper into how you store Date & Time in UTC versus local time (especially when users are submitting Power Apps forms globally)? And, if stored in UTC, how might a user select their time zone in the form, then receive an email confirmation OnSuccess() back in their local time? Thanks!
@@ShanesCows - totally agree! I suppose one angle which may have a lot of attention would be to create a teams scheduling app since time zone is a parameter. Ask Chewy! Maybe he has a couple ideas on how to make it fun 😊
Thanks Shane great video, as others have said it makes perfect sense now after you explain it. One question I have is do you know the best way to record and total up time? My usage for the app is for my team to record how long they did certain tasks. A timer isn’t really working, so needs to be an input. I’m having problems with excel reading the time data (which I export for reports) and it can’t total up.any help would be great.
If you weren't old school, you wouldn't have this problem :P. Using the add column on the list vs. the old way actually will remove the spaces out of your name for the column automatically. But this is def. something I practice with the naming and good to know in case you need to create a column not supported by the Quick edit way.
I don't. I do have a video that talks about changing the design completely that might help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7XXo9wjnJvc.html
Hi Shane, Thanks for the video! :) Great tips when starting out! I have a specific requirement to use the Choice function for a managed metadata field to create cascading dropdowns. My question is do you know of a workaround for the 20 item limit? At present it would appear that SharePoint only returns the first 20 items???
Hey Shane.. great channel... Question.. do you suggest using Boolean column or just numeric with 1/0? Found issues with writing back to boolean columns in the past, but might be good now... Tks!
Shane - Let's say that I want to find out where a particular Sharepoint column is used within a PowerApps application in the code or on a screen. Is there any easy way of doing that today?
Hey Shane. thank you. Quick question... 1) would you also avoid complex columns in CDS 2) would you avoid relationships in CDS. Why? I did my first Oakdale power apps and found complications in my code and found I was creating loads of collection to handle what I needed to work around the relationships....just wondering...
Great content Shane. Do you have any recommended videos or content on how to access specific sharepoint document locations without having to filter down from root folder.
Hi Shane, great video that needs to be republished regularly. Can you elaborate a bit more on your choice of field types. I am curious why you left out Multiline fields, people fields, and boolean. Is it simply because these fields are harder to work with or something else? For example, how will you deal with a need for a person field? Would you just store the claim id and convert in the app? My field type list would have been: Single/Multiple line text, number, yes/no (boolean), date/time, and person. Do you agree that it makes no sense to maintain a choice field in Sharepoint when you can either hard code values in the app or derive them from a list that holds values that frequently change.
Many thanks Shane, I wish I have seen this 3 months ago. I paid a lot time on "Choice" colume and so on. Hi Shaen, which kind of (no cost or low cost) data source do you recommend most? instead of Sharepoint list? by the way, CDS is a bit too complicated to me at this stage... Thanks and have a good day!
Hi Shane! With the new 'image' column type will it possible to save singature image for a 'Read & Acknowledge' type powerapp. Previously I had to save signature image in a seperate SP document library with power automate. Now that we have 'image' can we do it in a list? I would greatly appreciate your help with this.
Hey Shame I know you talked about this in some videos but... what's the best way to work with storing people (users) in text columns? I mean... Do you store the email, UPN, ID? Then in the App you use the O365UserSearch... Thanks!
It depends. For most cases I store the email address. But the larger the company the more I have to think about it. ID is the safest, but also causes the most work because you are always working backwards.
Shane, nice video. Always when I stuck I go to your ytb. One question, how PA can work with type Person/Group? For example when I have a task list and I assigned task to someone from my org and now I want to have this info in PA. .value or .text does not work
Hello Shane Thanks for the amazing videos. I learn Power apps from your course. I wanted to give Pl - 100 exam will the course enough or could you please guide all the people out there How we can prepare for Pl-100..?
Interesting. I'm working with SharePointPnPPowerShell -- when working with powershell and SharePoint columns, do column names with spaces present similar issues?
hey Shane, there is recently issue with direct patching from collection into SP source connection because PA is recognizing some columns as read only (totally correct), could you please cover this topic in some future video regarding also how to properly Patch(SPSource, SPSourceCollection)? is it ok? how to do it properly? BTW, overall, gr8 job mate I Really appreciate
Ohh so that must be why my customized powerapps share point form isnt saving the data in the list. I created the columns with spaces. I was getting this error - Data source invalid
Hey Shane, this is only true if you're creating columns "old school" I tested it the other day and if you create columns using the GUI on the modern list it won't have the x0200 in the url.
I was hoping to see how you would set a variable to the value of a SharePoint choice column, as it doesn't work for me with Set(varMyChoice, SharePointIntergration.Selected.'MyChoice'.Value). But you don't use Choice columns. 😂
