Can emotions affect health?
Is it possible that thoughts will impact the body’s ability to cope with disease?
And if they do… how does it happen?
Psychoneuroimmunologist Asya Rolls discusses how mental processes can affect immune responses and guides us through the physiological approaches to addressing the “mind-body question”. Asya Rolls is an Associate Professor at the Rappaport Medical School, Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. She is also an International Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator.
Rolls studies the physiological mechanisms whereby emotions and thoughts affect physical health. By deciphering the neuronal pathways mediating brain-immune signals, her work aims to harness the brain’s therapeutic potential.
Rolls obtained her PhD from the Weizmann Institute, Israel and completed her postdoctoral training at Stanford University as a Fulbright Scholar. She was elected member of the FENS-KAVLI (2015-2018) and a member of the Israeli Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Her work has been recognized through a number of awards including the NARSAD Young Investigator Award, Krill Prize (Wolf Foundation), the Adelis Brain Research Award, Rappaport Prize and the ERC starting grant. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Truth be told, despite the great detail and science presented, i am disappointed that doctors talk so much about our immune system but there is no way to measure its strength and balance due to its complexity. It will help to give us a clear list of do's and don'ts as we know best to keep our immune system at its best.

Faith plays major role on health and well being. A very important topic , well presented. I feel, when facility of using slides was available, it would have been prudent to use more slides. The talk would have been more effective.

This video helped me a lot last year. I understood that we all were going through a very hazardous psychological manipulation by mass media and that all would badly affect our immunity. So I switched off TV, didn’t watch and read any news.

These days, our brains are overstimulated, thanks to internet and digital devices, which has caused harm to our reward system. Abstaining from internet and media would rewire the reward system, and when its back to a more healthier state, people would start feeling more lively, because of the healthy functioning of reward system, that should in turn help with stress, and depression and would boost the immune system. Well, its already established that long term depression, stress and anxiety, which are psychological/mental factors, have effect on our physical health, which establishes the fact that Brain is infact a potent contributor to the state of immune system.
