Recorded on February 20, 2011 using a Flip Video camera. "The Waterloo Opening". A good example of the importance of the center in the game of checkers and draughts. Squares 14,15,18 and 19.
On the surface to many just starting out checkers seems simple as in the beginner's mind it's about exchanging pieces etc. But the true fact is that underneath the surface the game of checkers is a very strategic game. Lots of complexities such as when to defend and attack etc. Add in the different variations of Chess and one will soon learn that things aren't quite so simple as they may have originally thought.
Hi Kradol! Thank you for your comment. The position at the end is a 3 vs 3. Red 3,5, and 12. White 14,18 and king 2. The reason why it is a draw is because it is red move, otherwise as you notice if it was white move he would stop the checkers and win. Red goes 1. 3-8 if (k) 2-7 8-11 draws. Again 1. 3-8 18-15 2. 12-16 2-7 3. 8-12 7-11 4. 16-20 draws. White king does not have enough time to stop red 2 checkers from getting kings. Thank you!
Your welcome! You can try the web site, flyordie, the players play a lot the single corner opening and the cross opening, try to familiar yourself with those openings, i have a few on both, also the Glasgow is a good opening to learn and the Alma. Let me know how you are doing. You might want to get "Starting out in Checkers" by Richard Pask. You probably can get it on Amazon or ABE.com it hard to find in the books stores and also the Library usually has some checker books but mostly chess.
When I first learned checkers, I was told to go for the edges. That's probably why I never liked the game. Had I been told to go for the center, I would have been able to make a connection between chess and checkers. Considering the most common opening is to go for the edge, apparently this is how checkers is often taught to beginners. I can't help but wonder why this myth is perpetuated. Seems counterproductive.
Your checker rules is different from ours at 5:40 it is mandoratory to eat the white. And i think your gameplay is so simple that it will always end in draw.
