The Artiphon Chorda is a unique expressive midi controller and instrument which can be played as a handheld or desktop synth - it has 4 parts per song, holds 12 songs on device, has loads of potential presets to choose from, and is very portable, even with it's own speaker. The companion apps, Artiphon Connect and Artiphon Preset Creator allow you to both manage loads of preset sounds, and create your own - any of which you can then load to the device. There are some significant limitations to use Chorda as a full-on song producer, which I explain in the video - but as an idea machine, touch-expression midi controller and performance instrument, the Chorda shines. There are some bugs and quirks in the early version I've experienced which are annoyances, but I assume Artiphon will come through with strong support and firmware and app updates to make the Chorda a future device for any studio.
This video is NOT a full tutorial about making loops and songs - but it does go deep into understanding the structure of the musical content organization on the device and how the apps work with the hardware to make the full experience work. This video also describes a bunch of challenges described that I discovered in my early use... There were a bunch of bugs and other design quirks I removed from the video, as I was beginning to sound like a full on complainer... and that took away from how I really feel about the device overall - I really like it and respect the hardware design very much! The touch expression is killer - and I look forward to a much more complete experience with firmware and app updates , hopefully soon!!

Nice! Thank you for your very informative review. I’m having second thought of this chords. Do you know it sync with Logic Pro or IOS. I read one review that it crashed.

I like it as a way to play along with other devices and haven’t done much trying to sync it because the sequencer is pretty limited

I've watched several reviews of the chords. Great job. One question: are minor chords available in the major scales. In case I'm not expressing that correctly, in the key of C, many songs are made up of the 1,4,5 and minor 6. Can you play that minor cord in the scale if I've chosen C as my key to play in. Hope I'm asking this in a way you can understand...

Answer is different for different modes (parts) - yes totally understand your question. in Bass Mode - it's got all 7 notes of the scale, but it's monophonic, so you can't play chords. in Lead mode - it uses a pentatonic scale, so you're missing the 4th and 7th it seems - so your chords will be limited... in Chord mode - I don't know what chords it's using - but it seems like less-than "regular" voicings... will need more analysis on that one...

Also - quick blurb from Artiphon on their forum... about scales generally: "Currently, Chorda is limited to major and minor diatonic scales while in bass mode, and major and minor pentatonic scales in the lead mode. There is one additional “utility” present which offers a diatonic scale in Lead mode, called “Diatonic Lead.” We have been hearing a lot of requests for multiple scales, and the ability to customize your own, and we doing the preliminary work to scope this new feature request. "Looper" is definitely a misnomer. I was hoping the firmware update would have changed/fixed the limitation. It would be as bad if the loop sound didn't change when you select a different instrument sound - that way one could layer sounds on top of sounds - LIKE A LOOPER lol. I have an Instrument 1 and when I saw this "update" I bit onto the hype hard and got onto the Kickstarter as well. I received mine this week and that experience has turned me off of Artiphon as a company. The Chorda is sort of useless in my book - as an insturment for all the reasons you list. I'll probably give it to my kid.

Yeah - I get the disappointment - I’m feeling like they have a strong hardware leaning and don’t have the focus on continuous improvement of firmware for existing products - compared to say, Arturia, for example…

You're right, the Chorda is one big useless live instrument. .it takes for ever to find the right sounds you want to create a simple loop...

Great device, great review! Would love to know your thoughts on competitors within the price range.

Aligning competitive products to Chorda would have to be done based on expressive controls I think. For sequencing and other standalone features it would fall short - but for expressive performance and midi control it would likely shine at this price. Joué comes to mind, and Microfreak - and likely others - I’ll give it more thought!

I have received my unit on December 29 and have been fooling around with it quite a bit. Now, I’m not a musician at all and my tries at making music have been by guessing the keys to push. Like you mention, you never know with sample is hiding under the key and this is quite frustrating. Today, I risked myself at connecting Bluetooth with GARAGE BAND and things are pretty complicated but I managed to record some « New age type » music that nobody will listen to… I really don’t know if I want to keep this very well crafted and techno futuristic music instrument. If there was a little screen displaying some kind of info, it might help. Right now, I feel as if I’m left alone with my toy. It’s a love/hate affair… Since I have until end of January to return or keep, do you have some original tutorial to learn how to use CHORDA properly and finally have fun with my music machine ? Thanks for any input.

The tutorials from Artiphon are pretty good but I’m considering doing a “getting started” video too - hope to find time to do that! I found that USB connecting to my laptop and using the Artiphon Connect app helped me understand the sounds I had access to on the device.

The Artiohone videos make it look like a toy instrument and not a music making machine. They call it a synth… but I mean, is it really? More like a fun instrument with midi capabilities
@rochefsky
@rochefsky 7 месяцев назад
I think the "fun instrument" is actually a fair representation - AND it can be used to perform parts of musical compositions which likely would require some other equipment ;) - and it's the SOFTWARE (Artiphon Preset Creator) which is definitely a synth and sound design tool, where as the hardware instrument allows you to play those sounds... You really need to use the two software apps to get the most from this instrument.
